SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!! Earthquake swarm in Katla volcano, earthquake in Hekla volcano Posted on February 15, 2012 by Jón Frímann Tonight at 21:13 UTC there was an earthquake with the size of ML1.2, it had the depth of 0.1 km. But that is about 100 meters. This is the second earthquake in Hekla volcano during that past three weeks (almost an month since last earthquake did happen in Hekla volcano). So far nothing more has happened. But that might change without warning. Katla volcano Today at 16:04 to 16:27 UTC there was an minor earthquake swarm in Katla volcano. The largest earthquake had the size of ML2.6, with the depth of 1.4 km. Like before this earthquake swarm was because of an dike intrusion into Katla volcano caldera. But this suggests that the unrest that started in Katla volcano in July 2011 is not over. But for the moment it continues at lower rate then before. But that might also change without warning at any time. It is impossible to know for sure what is going to happen next in both of this volcano. But it is clearly worth watching what is going on. The earthquake in Hekla volcano can clearly be seen on my Heklubyggð geophone, as it forms an clear spike on it, the web site can be found here. Same does the largest earthquake from Katla volcano earlier today. [link to www.jonfr.com] |

SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!! Hekla – Probably not erupting Posted on February 15, 2012 by volcanocafe At 21.13.31 Icelandic time Hekla had an earthquake at 0.1km depth. The earthquake was 1.4km west of Heklas top, that places it roughly at the center spot for the 1947 eruption. Image by IGN: Earthquake at 1.2M at Hekla proper. The location puts it 1500 meters from the top of Hekla, and at a location that is inferred to be right on top of the fissure chamber running right under Hekla. The current quake is in a suitable spot since magma seems to have moved to the west during the last two weeks. It is hard to make any conclusion out of the changes in the magma that might have happened. I am hoping that we might get a good plot soon from the master of plots, GeoLurking that will shed some light on this. Image by IGN: No large transient after the earthquake at Hekla. This is probably not an eruption The reason for this is the lack of strainmeter transients, the lack of micro-quakes, and no changes in tremor levels. This might at any time change. I advice everyone to carefully follow the information given by IMO and Almannavarnir. Image by IMO: The earthquake is very visible on the Mjoaskerd SIL-station. No harmonic tremor component is yet visible, even on higher resolution. Before an eruption there should be visible “popcorn”, and series of small earthquakes, and probably a 2M earthquake. There is nothing like that now. If nothing more happens during the next 8 hours the danger is most likely over for this time. For those who want to read up on Hekla I strongly advice to read my posts on Hekla, you can get them by clicking on the word hekla on the right side of the page under Categories. The apropriate articles are named Hekla. Also, for those who I have told that volcanoes do not react to any small earthquake. Well, let us just say that Hekla is the only known exception to that rule. My articles explain why, look under Hekla. CARL [link to volcanocafe.wordpress.com] |

SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!! Posted on February 16, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol February 16, 2012 – CANARY ISLANDS - The submarine eruption south of El Hierro Island could be in a process of change: While visible activity on the sea surface above the vent, as well as harmonic tremor signal (thought to be more or less proportional to erupting magma flux) have nearly ceased, the number of earthquakes under the island has increased sharply since yesterday. On 15 February, more than 20 quakes were measured. Most of the earthquakes were very small, well below magnitude 2, and were clustered beneath the NW and SW sectors of the island at depths of around 10 km. There is no conclusive interpretation of this measurement. A possible (and usually assumed) scenario is that rising new magma from the mantle reservoir is creating new intrusions and rupturing rock to create pathways in the crust under El Hierro, not using the same paths as until now. That would explain why less magma is currently being erupted at the current vent(s). In that scenario, the eruption will continue, perhaps even from a different vent and an increase in magma output is going to be expected any time soon. However, this is speculation. The earthquakes could as well be related to some other (known or unknown) process, e.g. gravity-induced adjustments that respond to pressure changes and occur within previously ruptured areas of the crust beneath the island. The next days or weeks will show what happens next. –Volcano Discovery [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] |

I haven’t even updated my Iceland quake listing since November. Eh, it needed doing anyway. Two plots. Plot one are the quakes that led to Hekla’s last eruption. (color denotes depth) [link to i44.tinypic.com] The quakes started low, made an arc and popped the cork in about one hour. They didn’t cross the threshold of human perception until about 15 minutes before it went. This plot… is a most interesting plot. It covers all of 2011 to today. [link to i43.tinypic.com] Note the circle. Thats the area that has Carl’s ears perked up. Those quakes are “stacked” at approximately 4.8, 2.2, 1.3, 0.14 and 0.1 km depth. (BTW: “stacked” is my term for a group of quakes that seem to line up in a somewhat vertical column) The part that has my interest. Note the rather spread out set of quakes to the south east of that area. That is along the path that the 2000 swarm took. Remember, these are 2011 quakes, so they aren’t really closely related in time to the 2000 event, after shocks from that swarm would have died out long ago… this seems to be fresh. SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!! Tinakula, a small volcanic island in the South Pacific that has been caught doing some huffing and puffing this week by NASA satellites Quoting: Luisport [link to www.ouramazingplanet.co...] Tinakula is a conical stratovolcano which forms an island north of Nendo in Temotu Province, the Solomon Islands. It lies at the north end of the Santa Cruz Islands. It is about 3.5 km wide and rises 851 m above sea level, but rises three or four km above the sea floor. It erupts approximately every hour in a plume of ash and rocks. The volcano was first recorded in eruption in 1595 when Álvaro de Mendaña sailed past on his round the world voyage. This natural-color satellite image (top) shows a plume of volcanic gas, possibly mixed with a little ash, rising above the island’s summit. On February 13th and 14th, 2012, NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) detected heat signatures on Tinakula, and a small plume was apparent in visible imagery (lower image). Over the past decade satellites have detected intermittent “thermal anomalies” that suggest eruptions have taken place, but eyewitness observations are infrequent. The images was collected by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite (top) and MODIS on the Terra satellite on February 14, 2012. The island is uninhabited. A previous population was eradicated when the volcano erupted around 1840 and pyroclastic flows swept all sides of the island. In 1951, polynesians from Nukapu and Nupani settled on the island, which reached a peak population of 130, before it had to be evacuated again during the 1971 eruption. The village of Temateneni was on the southeast coast. In the late 1980s, two families (less than 10 people) from Nupani made another attempt at settlement. [link to earthquake-report.com] |

New unusual activity has been noticed around 5 volcanoes (below). CLEVELAND Alaska, Chuginadak Island 52.825°N, 169.944°W; summit elev. 1730 m AVO reported that during 8-14 February there were no observations of elevated surface temperatures or ash emissions from Cleveland because of partly cloudy conditions. On 10 February satellite observations revealed that the lava dome had grown to about 50 m in diameter. The Volcano Alert Level remained at Watch and the Aviation Color Code remained at Orange. No current seismic information was available because Cleveland does not have a real-time seismic network. GALUNGGUNG Western Java (Indonesia) 7.25°S, 108.058°E; summit elev. 2168 m On 13 February, CVGHM reported that from September 2011 to 8 February 2012 discolorations in the crater lake water at Galunggung were observed. In addition, a sudden increase in water temperature was measured, from 27 degrees Celsius on 5 February to 40 degrees on 8 February. Based on seismic data and crater lake observations, CVGHM raised the Alert Level from 1 to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) on 12 February and recommended staying at least 500 m away from the lake shore. IJEN Eastern Java (Indonesia) 8.058°S, 114.242°E; summit elev. 2799 m CVGHM lowered the Alert Level for Ijen from 3 to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) on 8 February based on decreased seismicity and visual observations of white plumes rising as high as 300 m above the crater. In addition, a decrease in lake water temperature was measured, which ranged from 42 degrees Celsius on 20 January to 37 degrees on 2 February. Based on information from CVGHM, the Darwin VAAC reported ash plumes that rose to altitudes of 3-3.4 km (10,000-11,000 ft) a.s.l. during 10-12 February, though clouds prevented the detection of ash in satellite imagery. REVENTADOR Ecuador 0.077°S, 77.656°W; summit elev. 3562 m IG reported that during 10-13 February new activity from Reventador was detected. Satellite images showed a thermal anomaly on 10 February. Based on pilot observations, the Washington VAAC reported an ash plume that rose to an altitude of 5.2 km (17,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted NW. On 11 February ash-and-steam emissions drifted NW. Seismicity increased on 12 February and a lava flow descended the NE flank during 12-13 February. Crater incandescence was observed during 10-13 February. Ongoing activity was noted among the following volcanoes : Etna, Sicily (Italy) – El Hierro, Canary Islands (Spain) – Karymsky, Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) – Kilauea, Hawaii (USA) – Kizimen, Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) – Popocatépetl, México – Puyehue-Cordón Caulle, Central Chile – Sakura-jima, Kyushu – Shiveluch, Central Kamchatka (Russia) [link to earthquake-report.com] |

NO, not at all, but we only think that the currents vents may have been collapsed in a way that almost NO magma flow is occurring. - Since midnight IGN has listed 7 earthquakes, all of them below the island itself or in the Las Calmas sea. This indicates that the magma is still trying to find his way to the surface. If the vent does not reopen, the earthquakes may rise again in number or strength (with a new uncertain and risky phase) or the volcano is throwing his towel in the ring (proverb) and the activity will stop for now.
