It scares me when people become so accustomed to their surroundings that they think living by volcanoes that erupt often is nothing to fear.
Mother nature is never predictable.

A Mw6.8 earthquake in Siberia, Russia

At 06:17 UTC this morning (26.02.2012) there was an earthquake with the size of Mw6.8 in Siberia, Russia. The depth of this earthquake was registered at 10 km. But it might be more or less when the data gets properly reviewed. Given the location of this earthquake to villages in this area, I am expecting some damage to be reported. How much and how excessive is hard to know at current time. This earthquake was also not far from the border with Mongolia. But I have not seen any reports of how it was felt there, or if there was any damage in that area following this earthquake.
There is continued aftershock activity after this earthquake, the largest aftershock so far has had the size Mb5.3. More information about this earthquake can be found on EMSC web site here. USGS information about this earthquake can be found here.

The trends that are clearly seen in Lurkings plots, are still going full swing on Sigrún Hréinsdottirs plots.
So, hekla is deflating in all areas except that weird western spot.

New Eruptions at Rincon de la Vieja in Costa Rica

It has been almost exactly 14 years since the last eruptive period for Rincón de la Vieja in Costa Rica, but it looks like the volcano might be awakening from its break. Last Thursday (Feb. 22), the volcano experienced two small explosions in the early morning. Seismic records suggest the volcano also had small explosions on Feb. 19 and 20, according to the OVSICORI report for Feb. 25 (PDF). None of the explosions caused any damage to anything near the volcano and there are no reports of ash fall other than in the crater itself. These explosions are very similar in style to the September 2011 explosions that were like phreatic in nature — that is, not new magma but superheated water generated the explosions. Of course, it is likely that new magma intruding the volcano is the heat source for the water, but these explosions could precede a new magmatic eruption by months or years (or lead to nothing at all). The volcano sits within a national park in Costa Rica and after these explosions, the National Emergency Commission has declared the crater area off-limits to visitors.


The last major eruption from Rincón de la Vieja was in 1966, when it produced at VEI 3 event that generated pyroclastic flows. All the way back in circa 1820 B.C., the volcano produced the Río Blanco tephra from a larger VEI 4 eruption. The summit of the volcano hosts a small crater lake (see above), which could potentially add to the initial explosivity of any eruption as the water interacts with erupting magma. There are also abundant mudpots and springs within the national park as well, attesting to the persistent geothermal activity in the area. This geothermal activity is the reason why the Costa Rican government is looking to build a 200 MW geothermal energy plant in the National Park as well.

Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano rumbles with 16 low intensity emissions – alert level, Phase 2, yellow

February 28, 2012 – MEXICO (Notimex) – The National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred) reported that in the last 24 hours, the Popocatepetl volcano registered 16 emissions of low intensity, accompanied by emissions of water vapor, ash, and gas. The body of the Interior Ministry said in a statement that the largest emissions occurred yesterday at 14:50 and 17:12 hours during the night glow was observed on the volcano, while the rest of the monitoring parameters remain approximately unchanged. He said, at the time of the report, a slight emission of water vapor and gas was flashing from the volcano. The volcanic alert remains in Phase 2 yellow. The Ministry said there were moderate exhalations, some with ash emissions, sporadic bursts of low to moderate probability of emission of incandescent fragments within walking distance of the crater and incandescent light in the observable crater overnight. The Cenapred explained that a security parameter remains in a 12 kilometer radius of the volcano, so staying in that area is not permitted and controlled traffic is maintained between Santiago and San Pedro Nexapa Xalitzintla via Paso de Cortes. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has confirmed to the direction of the Civil Protection Plan by volcanic risk (PEVOLCA) the process of normalization of the eruptive phenomenon of El Hierro has maintained in all parameters, with a marked reduction of seismicity, deformation and presence of associated gas, noting only a process of degassing in the broadcast area.

Nice sequence of quakes in Vatnajokull, then looking at their depths they are probably not related since the first quake at Bardarbunga at shallow, but later quakes were much much deeper, and to the south around Grimsvotn and in direction of Oraefajakokull.

Otherwise, not so much happening today, except that spring is already trying to show up here in south Iceland

Regarding the Vatnajökull quakes; It is a bit interesting that they are deep. The one at 36km close to Grimsfjöll could be a reactivation of the deep feeder.

This strong flow is being supplied lava from Kilauea Volcano’s Pu`u O`o Crater four miles to the northwest. The rupture was at the 1600-foot elevation about four miles northwest of Kalapana Gardens, and directly above the old Royal Gardens subdivision. Media ratchets up fear of another major earthquake

So called megathrust earthquakes such as the one that struck off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture on March 11, 2011, tend to occur in pairs, with a relatively short gap between them.

Moving pictures: On Nov. 11 1855, the Great Ansei Earthquake struck Edo (now Tokyo), killing 7,000 and inflicting widespread damage. According to legend, quakes are caused by giant catfish moving underground. Soon after, quake woodblock prints known as namazu-e (catfish pictures) became popular, such as this one which shows residents of Edo punishing the catfish that caused the quake. KYODO

Such was the case in the Ansei Era (November 1854 through March 1860), during which Japan was successively shaken by several major earthquakes.

Since January, Shukan Gendai and several other weekly magazines, as well as sports tabloids, have produced a stream of copy about the inevitability of the next big one.

“Resign yourself that an M8 quake beneath Tokyo and an M9 quake in the Tokai region are imminent!” screams a headline in Shukan Gendai’s issue of Jan. 21.

For those in the Tokyo metropolitan area, one of the scariest prospects is for a so-called shuto chokka-gata quake of the magnitude 8 class, which last occurred in 1703.

Chokka means “directly beneath,” but Aera (Feb. 20) explains that this does not mean such a quake’s epicenter would necessarily be under the center of Tokyo, but rather somewhere within a large area that ranges between southern Ibaraki in the northeast to Kanagawa’s boundary with Shizuoka in the southwest.

Since 1894, five large quakes ranging from magnitude 6.7 to magnitude 7.2, have occurred therein, with the epicenter of two in Ibaraki (1895 and 1921), one in Tokyo (1894), one off the coast of Chiba (1987) and one near the entrance to Tokyo Bay (1922).

Guessing where the next one will strike is like playing Russian roulette with a revolver with chambers for 18 bullets. Sunday Mainichi (Feb. 26) gives that many possible scenarios based on a list drawn up by the Cabinet Office in 2005.

Each scenario contains an estimate of human fatalities and number of structures suffering damage. Quakes between magnitude 6.9 and 7.3 centered at the north, east, or west of Tokyo Bay, for example, are projected to kill between 11,000 and 12,000 people and damage or destroy some 680,000 to 850,000 buildings. These three, however, are worst-case scenarios and the damage from a quake occurring on the region’s outer fringes would be much less.

In any event, havoc is likely to ensue. Shukan Bunshun (Feb. 9) ran a scenario of what could be expected to transpire in Tokyo in the first week following a major earthquake. It points out, for instance, that 70 percent of Tokyo’s water mains are unprepared for a major quake. Economist Yuji Nemoto tells the magazine that repair costs to water mains from a Tokyo quake of the same scale as the one last March 11 would run several tenfolds that of the damage incurred in Tohoku. And the power utility may need as long as 55 days to restore electric power to 1.9 million households.

As for harbingers of impending geological activity, Friday (Feb. 24) reports that bats in caves at the foothills of Mt. Fuji have begun to behave erratically from last December. Are their sensitive ears picking up the nascent rumbles of a major volcanic eruption?

What really drove the needle against the pin on the scare-o-meter was the front page story in the Yomiuri Shimbun of Jan. 23, which cited a team of seismologists at the University of Tokyo who were quoted as having estimated the probability of a major quake beneath Tokyo as 70 percent within the next four years. With such a probability, suggested my esteemed colleague Philip Brasor only half jokingly, by the time this column is printed — if it’s printed — the quake might have already occurred.

A point of contention arose, however, over the estimate cited by the Todai team, which appears to have been based on analysis of the frequency of aftershocks following the March 11 disaster off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture through September. The number has tapered off sharply since then.

At least two weeklies waded into the fray to challenge the dire prediction. Shukan Post (Feb. 17) denounced the Yomiuri article as “rampant sensationalism,” and quotes former Rissho University professor Keiichi Katsura as saying the publishing of such figures points to “a decline in the quality of journalism,” because the writer cherry-picked the figures without providing other data that mitigates their impact.

“The newspapers are now even worse than the weekly magazines,” rants Katsura. “Since readership is in decline, their reporters want to run figures that catch readers’ attention. Then that gets amplified by TV networks and the weekly magazines.

“This suggests Japanese journalism is in its final throes of terminal illness.”

Spa! (Feb. 7-14) quotes a member of the Todai research team, Shinichi Sakai, who cites the Gutenberg-Richter Law on the frequency and energy of earthquakes. “Stated simply, for each incremental increase in quake magnitude, the number of earthquakes declines to one-tenth,” he explains. “For every 10 magnitude-5 quakes occurring, there will be one magnitude 6. While the total number of earthquakes between March and September of last year were sevenfold that of a normal year, if the number from September is extended through to present, the figure drops to just threefold. So that should make the likelihood of a major quake in Tokyo 80 percent over the next 30 years and less than 50 percent over the next four years.”

A comment in Spa! attributed to an unnamed weekly magazine editor is also revealing.

“In typical years, January doesn’t have a lot of news to report. So this year we’ve taken up the theme of a year that begins with a disaster. It sells magazines. Even now, earthquakes are a topic that people feel viscerally. And as far as we’re concerned, it makes for ‘killer contents.’”

Contents which, as far as this writer is concerned, are much preferable to a killer earthquake.

A small quake swarm just started at Katla, Herdubreid and Upptyppingar.
The swarm started at 18.16:42,3 with an 0,9M at Trölladyngja. Currently there have so far been twelve earthquakes in the area ranging between 0,1 and 1,9M.

Nither amount of quakes, nor intensity is much to lift the eyebrows over at this region. It is though rather telling that Upptyppingar is playing quake-pingis with Askja and Askjas Subfeature Herdubreid. It kind of proves that there might be a reason to re-evaluate Upptyppingar and move it from Kverkfjöll to the Askja fissure complex.

Mount Marapi in Indonesia’s West Sumatra briefly erupts

Mount Marapi, a volcano located in the Indonesian province of West Sumatra, briefly erupted on early Wednesday morning, officials said. It comes after activity was also reported at the volcano in August 2011.

The 2,891-meter (9,485 feet) tall volcano, which is located near the cities and town of Bukittinggi, Padang Panjang and Batusangkar in West Sumatra, began erupting at around 7:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, according to the Antara news agency...
