Brennisteinsfjöll is one of my favorite mountains here in Iceland. I have trekked all around it. From the lake Kleifarvatn to the west, the huge lava tube “Búri” to the east, and the old sulphur mine at Grindaskarð to the north.

Some pix of the lake area.

And me, the happy camper.

After donning this mask and walking into a blizzard, I came across a man whose jeep was stuck in the snow. So I walked up to him and asked if I could help. For some reason after seeing me materailize out of practically no where, he declined my help. So I walked on, trekking further up the mountain and into the blinding whiteness. He must still tell stories of the masked ghost he spotted on Brennisteinsfjöll that day.

True story.

Re: World Volcano Activity UPDATE !!! MARAPI AGAIN!!! KATLA AGAIN!!! SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!!
Hawai’i: The Royal Gardens subdivision, built in what became an active lava field, saw its last resident forced to leave and his home destroyed by the advancing lava flows on Kilauea. Longtime resident Larry Thompson saw his house inundated by lava over the weekend – he had resisted leaving Royal Gardens for almost 30 years and two homes. The ABC News has some video of Thompson talking about the lava (with some smoldering lava on the road surface behind him). Activity at Kilauea has declined over the last few weeks with little action at the Halema’uma’u and Pu’u O’o craters

Ecuador: The weekend saw some new explosive eruptions at Tungurahua with multiple explosions have been registered at the volcano over the last few days. Seismicity has also increased at the Ecuadoran volcano. This activity has been covering much of the region around Tungurahua with ash – not surprisingly causing problems with crops and respiratory health for residents.

Indonesia: Marapi in Indonesia continues to make noise according to reports coming out of Indonesia. Suparmo from the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Agency said that although the volcano has experienced a number of explosions this week, the overall trend is less vigorous activity, thus the volcano remains at alert level II. Ash was reported falling as far as 10 km from the volcano and a 3-km exclusion zone is still being maintained around Marapi.

Vanuatu: New Zealand and Vanuatu are collaborating to improve volcano monitoring in Vanuatu. The New Zealand Aid Programme will fund NZ$500,000 worth of seismic monitoring and real-time cameras on Gaua, Aoba (Ambae) and Yasur (Tanna) that will send data to the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department (VMGD) in Port Vila. Members of the New Zealand GNS Science will train scientists from Vanuatu on volcano monitoring as well.

Alaska: The Alaska Volcano Observatory lowered the alert status at Kanaga from Yellow to Green over the weekend after potential eruption precursor activity waned. After the brief eruption on February 18 and a period of heightened seismicity, the volcano returned to background levels of activity since February 24. Cleveland volcano remains on Orange alert level with continued dome growth at the summit, although little change has been noted in recent satellite images of the volcano’s summit. Also, the Alaska Dispatch had one of the first articles I’ve seen marking the upcoming 100th anniversary of the Novarupta/Valley of 10,000 Smokes eruption. I’m sure we’ll see more of this was the June 6 anniversary approaches.

Mars: Some recent research looking into features on the Martian surface suggest that a large landslide might have been triggered by geologically recent volcanic activity. According to the study by Rogers et al. (2011) in JGR, the boulders at Cerberus Fossae may have been loosed by “active faulting associated with dike emplacement that is subradial to the Elysium Mons volcano”. That would suggest it isn’t truly volcanism that might be triggering melting of subsurface ice to allow for the boulders to move but rather intrusions of magma to heat the surrounding ground.

Vanuatu volcanoes / New Zealand technological aid
Helping reduce the risk to communities from volcanic eruptions in Vanuatu is one of the goals of a five-year New Zealand-funded project launched this week. The $500,000 scientific program will see three Vanuatu volcanoes being closely monitored to pick up early signs of unrest and allow time to put emergency procedures in place. New monitoring equipment will be installed on volcanoes Tanna, Ambae, and Gaua island and will send data back to scientists in Port Vila allowing warnings to be sent to the islands if volcanic activity changes.

AVO indicates that Iliamna
Volcano has gone through several episodes of
increased earthquake activity during the past three months. One of these
episodes is currently ongoing and is characterized by numerous small
earthquakes. This increase in earthquake activity may be related to movement of
magma at depth. Additional observations including an airborne gas sampling and an
observation flight are being planned. Iliamna is showing earthquake activity
similar to activity from September 1996 to February 1997. The volcano did not
erupt then.

Iliamna
remains at volcano alert level "normal" and aviation code "green".

Most interesting information regarding Bob. Great post, Carl. Here is another one to keep an eye on:

Russia Volcano Bezymianny put on Code Red for imminent eruption

(TheWeatherSpace.com) – One of the most active volcanoes in the world has been put on aviation color code red, the highest alert given by the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team.

KVERT assigned the code on Tuesday and warns of an imminent eruption. “Activity of the volcano continuously increases,” says the alert. “Strong ash explosions up to 42,640 ft (13 km) a.s.l. possible at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

KVERT source: Activity of the volcano remains high. Bezymianny volcano is one the most active volcano of the world. In 1955, for the first time in history, Bezymianny started to erupt and after six months it produced a catastrophic eruption with the total volume of eruptive products over 3 km3. The lava dome began to grow in the explosive caldera immediately after the catastrophe and continues at now. 42 Vulcanian-type strong explosive eruptions of Bezymianny occurred in 1965-2011, while 20 of them producing ash up to 10-15 km a.s.l. Last explosive eruption occurred on April 13, 2011

Re: World Volcano Activity UPDATE !!! MARAPI AGAIN!!! KATLA AGAIN!!! SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!!
March 8, 2012

Active volcanoes in the world
17 volcanoes have shown changes in activity last week. New unusual activity has been noticed around 5 volcanoes (below).

BEZYMIANNY
Central Kamchatka (Russia) 55.978°N, 160.587°E; summit elev. 2882 m
KVERT reported that during 24 February-2 March seismic activity at Bezymianny remained elevated, with about 7-19 weak events registered daily. A thermal anomaly was detected in satellite images. Gas-and-steam activity was observed on 26 February; clouds obscured the volcano on the other days. One short volcanic tremor episode was detected on 29 February. About 40 seismic events were detected on 1 March and, according to satellite data analysis, the size and brightness of a thermal anomaly abruptly increased on 2 March. The Aviation Color Code was raised to Red. During 2-5 March there were 25-40 weak seismic events detected; cloud cover prevented observations of the volcano.

CLEVELAND
Chuginadak Island 52.825°N, 169.944°W; summit elev. 1730 m
AVO reported that during 24 February-2 March satellite images of Cleveland revealed no unusual activity and no significant changes in the size of the lava dome. A weak thermal anomaly was detected in satellite imagery on 3 March. The Volcano Alert Level remained at Watch and the Aviation Color Code remained at Orange. No current seismic information was available because Cleveland does not have a real-time seismic network.

ETNA
Sicily (Italy) 37.734°N, 15.004°E; summit elev. 3330 m
Sezione di Catania – Osservatorio Etneo reported that the third episode of lava fountaining from Etna’s New Southeast Crater (New SEC) occurred on the morning of 4 March and was more explosive than the preceding episode. The beginning of the eruption was characterized by a rapid increase in volcanic tremor amplitude coincident with Strombolian explosions that increased in intensity and frequency. Just after 0800 lava overflowed the deep breach in the SE rim of the crater and reached the SE base of the cone within 15 minutes, then advanced towards the W rim of the Valle del Bove. Explosive activity changed to continuous lava fountaining and an eruption plume developed at about 0830. Large pyroclasts fell on the steep flanks of the cone, causing avalanches.
At about 0850 small pyroclastic flows generated by the partial collapse of the eruption column mainly descended the NE flank, and somewhat down the S flank. A lava flow was emitted from a new eruptive vent on the upper SW flank of the New SEC cone and descended into the saddle between the old and new SEC cones. The lava interacted with snow, causing powerful explosions and small pyroclastic flows. These phreatic explosions generated jets of vapor and launched rock fragments to distances of several tens of meters. A lahar developed which traveled toward the “Belvedere” monitoring station, on the W rim of the Valle del Bove, and passed a few tens of meters to the N of the monitoring instruments.
A lava flow also issued from an eruptive fissure on the upper N flank of the cone and descended a few hundred meters to the NE, surrounding the N base of the cone. After descending the steep W slope of the Valle del Bove, the flow split into several branches on the more gently sloping terrain. These branches exceeded in length those of 9 February, reaching a total distance of about 3.5 km from the crater. Shortly after 1000, the activity started to diminish; lava fountaining ceased at 1032, two hours after the onset of the paroxysmal phase. The lava flow emitted from the fissure on the SW flank of the cone continued advancing for a few hours after the cessation of the activity.
The eruption column rose several kilometers above the summit of Etna. Ash and lapilli were carried NE by the wind, affecting the areas around Piedimonte, Etneo, and Taormina. Fine ash fell as far as the Messina area and southern Calabria. Again, the pyroclastic cone of the New SEC had grown in height, mainly on its N rim.

KANAGA
Andreanof Islands 51.923°N, 177.168°W; summit elev. 1307 m
AVO reported that the level of unrest at Kanaga declined to background levels. On 2 March the Volcano Alert Level was lowered to Normal and the Aviation Color Code was lowered to Green.

TUNGURAHUA
Ecuador 1.467°S, 78.442°W; summit elev. 5023 m
IG reported that during 29 February-2 March cloud cover prevented views of Tungurahua. On 3 March seismicity increased. Clouds mostly prevented observations; during breaks in the cloud cover ash plumes were observed rising 3 km above the crater and drifting S and SW. Explosions ejected blocks that rolled down the flanks. Two of the explosions generated sounds resembling cannon shots, and vibrated windows. Ashfall was reported in Choglontus (13 km WSW), Manzano (8 km SW), Cahuají (8 km SW), and Motilones (W). On 4 March ashfall was reported in Yuibug and observers noted hot deposits from a small pyroclastic flow that occurred high in the Achupashal drainage (NW). Ash plumes observed during breaks in the cloud cover on 5 March rose 1 km and drifted W. Ash again fell in Choglontus. Clouds prevented observations on 6 March.

Ongoing activity was noted among the following volcanoes :
Bagana, Bougainville (Melanesia) – Fuego (Guatemala) – El Hierro, Canary Islands (Spain) – Karymsky, Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) – Kilauea, Hawaii (USA) – Kizimen, Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) – Popocatépetl (México) – Puyehue-Cordón Caulle, Central Chile (Chile) – Sakura-jima, Kyushu (Japan) – Santa María (Guatemala) – Shiveluch, Central Kamchatka (Russia) – Suwanose-jima, Ryukyu Islands (Japan)

ILIAMNA VOLCANO (CAVW #1103-02-)
60°1’55″ N 153°5’30″ W, Summit Elevation 10016 ft (3053 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

AVO has raised the Aviation Color Code to YELLOW and Alert Level to ADVISORY at Iliamna Volcano following a sustained increase in seismic activity over the past three months. Current activity is characterized by numerous earthquakes that have varied in their number and magnitude over the past week. This sustained seismic activity does not mean that an eruption is imminent or certain. A similar seismic swarm was detected in 1996/1997 that was likely related to an intrusion of magma at depth did not culminate in an eruption.

AVO will continue to observe Iliamna closely, will conduct additional investigations and report on them as warranted.

Volcano Activity in Colombia on Saturday, 10 March, 2012 at 03:56 (03:56 AM) UTC.

Description
The Nevado del Ruiz volcano, whose eruption 26 years ago killed around 25,000 people, is showing signs of activity after nearly 20 years laying dormant, said Colombian geological group Ingeominas Thursday. Early Friday morning, geologists completed an observational fly-over with the assistance of the Colombian Air Force, during which they photographed the Nevado del Ruiz volcano and noted "ash on the glacier, near the crater rim and on the eastern flank," as well as a 4,500 foot gas column at the mouth of the volcano. During the same day a seismic tremor was reported along with an increase in sulfur dioxide emissions. All of these factors signal that the volcano is heating up. Located about 80 miles west of Bogota, Nevado del Ruiz is an active volcano that produces pyroclastic flows, or swift currents of hot gas and rock that lead to destructive mudslides. There have been numerous eruptions over the centuries, with the most recent was on November 13, 1985.

Volcano Eruption in USA on Friday, 09 March, 2012 at 04:02 (04:02 AM) UTC.

Back

Updated: Saturday, 10 March, 2012 at 04:01 UTC
Description
A remote Alaska volcano that has been restless since last summer belched ash in a small, short explosion, scientists said on Thursday, but the cloud was not expected to impact commercial airline traffic. Meanwhile, a second volcano that has not erupted in recorded Alaska history is experiencing a swarm of earthquakes for which scientists have yet to determine a cause. The explosion was at Cleveland Volcano, located on an uninhabited Aleutian island 940 miles southwest of Anchorage. While the exact size of the ash cloud it produced is unknown, it was believed to be small, as was a cloud the resulted from a similar explosion at the volcano in December, said Steve McNutt, a University of Alaska Fairbanks seismologist who works at the Alaska Volcano Observatory. That cloud rose to less than 20,000 feet, lower than the levels used by large commercial jets, McNutt said. The observatory maintains no on-site monitors at remote Cleveland, so it relies on mostly satellite imagery for news about the volcano's activities. But poor weather conditions are currently blocking satellite images of Cleveland, McNutt said. Despite their distance from population centers, Cleveland and other volcanoes in Alaska's Aleutian chain pose potential risks to commercial air traffic because they lie below a well-used route between North America and Asia.

Updated: Sunday, 11 March, 2012 at 05:11 UTC
Description
An explosion rattled an Aleutian volcano Friday for the second time in two days, and cloudy weather again prevented clear views of any ash emission, researchers said. A brief explosion Wednesday night rocked Cleveland Volcano, 940 miles southwest of Anchorage on Chuginadak Island and likely produced some airborne ash, a volcanologist said. The blast may have also removed or partially removed a lava dome growing in the volcano's summit crater. Instruments 60 and 90 miles away registered another short explosion at Cleveland on Friday, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Satellites have not detected a high-level ash cloud, one that could pose a threat to trans-oceanic air travel, the observatory says. As Cleveland remained restless, researchers kept an eye on a volcano closer to Anchorage: Iliamna Volcano, which hasn't erupted for 500 to 1,000 years. The Alaska Volcano Observatory raised its alert level for Iliamna on Friday due to increased seismic activity over recent months. A similar swarm of small earthquakes at the volcano, 140 miles from Anchorage, occurred in 1996 and 1997, the observatory says. Seismographs showed the heightened activity continued Saturday.

12 emissions reported at Mexico’s Popocatepetl volcano in the last 24 hours
Posted on March 10, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
March 10, 2012 – MEXICO – The drills continue in all the communities surrounding the volcano Popocatepetl, said the director of Civil Protection, Jesus Morales Rodriguez, who said that the drills will be permanent in the area. The state official said they have instituted the Special Plan Popocatepetl, where they indicated that the performance of the drills need to be performed at least once every 15 days, at random to include participatants in all communities. These actions were recommended to keep the community aware of the dangers and the need of evacuations should threatening conditions arise. According to the website of the National Center for Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED) the current alert status is in phase two, in yellow, so that the conditions of the volcano are normal. The agency also disclosed that in the last 24 hours, 11:00 hours, Popocatepetl has registered 12 exhalations of low intensity, accompanied by water and gas emissions, without major changes. Because the probability remains moderate exhalations emission of ash and a slight glow seen at night, it is recommended the Civil Protection Directorate maintain a safety radius up to 12 km from the volcano, to keep traffic controlled between Santiago and San Pedro Nexapa Xalitzintla via Paso de Cortes. The public is also asked to continue to tune in for the latest status updates concerning the volcano’s activity. –Sexenio [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Indonesia’s Ijen volcano placed on high alert after rise in activity
Posted on March 13, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
March 13, 2012 – INDONESIA – The official alert level for Ijen volcano in East Java, Indonesia, has been raised again to 3 (“alert”) due to an increase in activity, our Indonesian correspondent Andi reports. A new 10 m wide gas vent, which erupted burning gasses, was observed on 10 March at 17 m distance from the shore. Thick steaming, larger than usual, forming a thick white column of sulfur steam 200 m high was already noted since 3 March. Measurements of the lake water temperature at 5 m depth had also shown increased values of 42.70 deg C. On 10 March, the lake surface was 2 meters higher than normal, although this could be attributed to heavy recent rain fall. Another sign of increased activity is that many leaves of trees and other plants around the crater have died recently, suggesting higher than normal SO2 levels. Seismic activity has been rising as well. Since 22 Feb, a near continuous tremor signal has been being recorded. In the interval 22-31 Feb, there were 52 harmonic tremor periods lasting up to 20 minutes, as well as 17 2 low-frequency earthquakes, 38 mostly shallow volcanic quakes. This number increased to 306 tremor episodes lasting up to 25 minutes, 27 low frequency, and 125 mostly shallow volcanic earthquakes during the latest observation period between 1-10 March. Ijen volcano in East Java, famous for its turquoise acid lake Kawah Ijen and the sulfur mine inside its crater, had been on higher alert starting 18 December 2011, but was lowered to alert 2 on 4 Feb this year, but is now again at the second highest level of 3, meaning that volcanologist think an eruption could be imminent. Access to the crater is currently closed. Ijen last erupted in 1999. –Volcano Discovery

Interesting earthquakes in Iceland.

- One earthquake in Veidivotn and another two in Hamarinn, up to M2.0
- Deeper earthquakes in Katla, up to M1.5

These are signs that Katla is getting even closer to an eruption. Expect more deep quakes.
And that Hamarinn-Veidivotn also started its early signs towards an eruption, which probably is not going to be in soon, but rather more years or decades away. Expect more quakes there.

It might be a wild guess that maybe Katla will have a significant swarm at its chamber (3-4km) sometime in the next couple of days, if this deep magma manages to rise further upwards.

Japan’s Sakurajima experiences its most violent eruption in 3 years
Posted on March 13, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
March 13, 2012 – JAPAN – Sakurajima continued its second day of violent eruptions on Tuesday, spewing hot rocks and ash, but there was no major damage in the vicinity, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said. The agency said Monday’s powerful eruption was the most forceful since 2009. The volcano is located in the southern prefecture of Kagoshima. The Meteorological Agency added that the volcano has been erupting steadily for the last two years, but the eruption on Monday turned violent, throwing 50-centimetre (1 foot 6 inches) rocks nearly 1.2 miles away, the furthest since 2009. In response, the Meteorological agency extended the eruption warning to residents living further away from the mouth of the volcano. The volcano has already had over 300 eruptions this year. Sakurajima volcano, one of Japan’s more active volcanoes, resumed activity in 1955 and has been active ever since. Question for anyone. I've been watching the cme from the sun impact the earths magnetosphere and it looks to me like a lot of that heat/ energy goes right thru the earths poles. Do you know if this has any impact on the innerds of earth. Like more volcanos?

[link to www2.nict.go.jp] here is what I am seeing. So don't you think all that energy is going to heat the innards up and cause more volcanos?pump2pump2
