That swarm to the west of Teide looks like a reprise of Hierro’s swarms – linear pattern,
orientation roughly N-S, and just west of centre of island. However much less intense eq frequency, but its a bigger island so I’d expect that..

That’s an interesting observation,
Also like El Hierro, the swarm is “cutting” across one arm of Tenerife’s triple “mercedes” rift… It was reported recently that that particular swarm; the 2004 Teide seismic crisis, was associated with a magma intrusion…

Artificial Earthquakes on an Active Volcano

GNS Science volcanologists recently set up an experiment to test the seismic velocity of the rocks that make up White Island. Over the last few decades it has been New Zealand's most active volcano and has produced minor eruptions in recent weeks.

Ongoing Activity: | Batu Tara, Komba Island (Indonesia) | Cleveland, Chuginadak Island | Etna, Sicily (Italy) | Fuego, Guatemala | Galeras, Colombia | Karymsky, Eastern Kamchatka (Russia) | Kilauea, Hawaii (USA) | Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia | Popocatépetl, México | Sakura-jima, Kyushu | Santa María, Guatemala | Shiveluch, Central Kamchatka (Russia)
New Activity/Unrest

GROZNY GROUP Iturup Island 45.026°N, 147.922°E; summit elev. 1211 m

According to news reports, Ivan Grozny, one of two volcanoes comprising the Grozny Group, erupted on 16 August, after increased gas emissions from the NE flank were observed the day before. An ash plume rose 1.2 km and caused ashfall in Goryachiye Klyuchi (9 km W) and Kurilsk (25 km away). Residents reported a sulfur dioxide odor. By the afternoon ashfall had ceased and the odor subsided.

Geologic Summary. The Grozny volcano group in central Iturup Island contains the complex volcanoes of Ivan Grozny and Tebenkov. The former has a 3-3.5 km diameter caldera that is open to the south, where the large, 1158-m-high andesitic Grozny extrusion dome (also known as Etorofu-Yake-yama) was emplaced. Several other lava domes of Holocene age were constructed to the NE; extrusion of these domes has constricted a former lake in the northern side of the caldera to an extremely sinuous shoreline. The forested andesitic Tebenkov volcano, also known as Odamoi-san, lies immediately to the NE of the Grozny dome complex. The large Machekh crater, which displays strong fumarolic activity, lies immediately south of Tebenkov. Historical eruptions, the first of which took place in 1968, have been restricted to Ivan Grozny.

SOTARA Colombia 2.108°N, 76.592°W; summit elev. 4400+ m

According to INGEOMINAS, the Observatorio Vulcanológico and Sismológico de Popayán reported that during 8-14 August seismic activity at Sotará increased. The seismic network recorded 110 magnitude 0.2-1.6 events mainly located in an area 0.1-5 km NE of the peak, at depths of 2-6 km. Inflation was detected in the NE area, coincident with the zone of increased seismicity. Web-camera views showed no morphological changes. The Alert Level was raised to III (Yellow; "changes in the behavior of volcanic activity"), or the second lowest level.

Geologic Summary. Volcán Sotará, also known as Cerro Azafatudo, is a little-known andesitic-dacitic stratovolcano located about 25 km SSE of Popayán city in southern Colombia, SW of Puracé volcano. Three calderas, 4.5, 2.5, and 1 km in diameter, are found on Sotará, giving the summit an irregular profile. No historical eruptions are known from Sotará, however the volcano currently displays fumarolic and hot spring activity.

TONGARIRO North Island (New Zealand) 39.13°S, 175.642°E; summit elev. 1978 m

GeoNet reported that seismic activity at Tongariro remained low during 14-16 August; weather conditions prevented observations of the craters. There were several reports of gas odors on 15 August, particularly from the Manawatu region (S). On 17 August GeoNet noted that although very minor amounts of ash were emitted in the first few days after the eruption, there had been no significant activity since 6 August. Seismic activity had returned to low levels after the eruption. The Alert Level was lowered to 1 (on a scale of 0-5) and the Aviation Colour Code remained at Yellow (second lowest on a four-color scale).

Geologic Summary. Tongariro is a large andesitic volcanic massif, located immediately NE of Ruapehu volcano, that is composed of more than a dozen composite cones constructed over a period of 275,000 years. Vents along a NE-trending zone extending from Saddle Cone (below Ruapehu volcano) to Te Mari crater (including vents at the present-day location of Ngauruhoe) were active during a several hundred year long period around 10,000 years ago, producing the largest known eruptions at the Tongariro complex during the Holocene. The youngest cone of the complex, Ngauruhoe, has grown to become the highest peak of the massif since its birth about 2500 years ago. The symmetrical, steep-sided Ngauruhoe, along with its neighbor Ruapehu to the south, have been New Zealand's most active volcanoes during historical time.

TUNGURAHUA Ecuador 1.467°S, 78.442°W; summit elev. 5023 m

IG reported that on 15 August three small explosions from Tungurahua were detected along with continuous tremor. An ash plume rose 1 km above the crater and drifted W, producing ashfall in El Manzano (8 km SW) and Pillate (7 km W). Activity increased the next day, characterized by increased tremor, roaring sounds, and instances of vibrating windows. An ash plume again rose 1 km, drifted W, and produced ashfall in El Manzano and Pillate. On 17 August two long periods of tremor associated with emissions were detected; 10 explosions were also recorded. Periodic clear views of the crater showed continuous steam-and-ash plumes rising 1.5-3 km above the crater and drifting WNW. Ash fell in Pillate and Bilbao (8 km W). Activity significantly increased at 2100, and strong explosions were detected. Cloud cover prevented visual observations.

In the morning of 18 August, satellite images showed a 50-km-long plume drifting NW. A pyroclastic flow deposit on the NW flank was observed with a thermal camera. Steam-and-ash plumes rose 1.5 km and drifted WNW; ashfall was reported in Choglontús (SW), Pillate, and San Juan de Pillate (9 km W). Strong glow from the crater was observed at night, along with incandescent blocks rolling down the top of the cone. A pyroclastic flow descended the NE flank, and a lava flow on the N flank traveled 500 m.

Activity remained elevated on 19 and 20 August; continuous tremor indicating emissions was detected, along with nine explosions on 19 August and five on 20 August. Steam-and-ash plumes rose 1.5-2 km and drifted W and SW. Ash fell in Pillate, Igualata (20 km W), El Santuario, Hualpamba, Cevallos (23 km NW), Quero (20 km NW), Mocha (25 km WNW), Santa Anita, and Tisaleo (29 km NW). Roaring sounds were heard and explosions vibrated windows. Strombolian activity ejected incandescent blocks that landed a few hundred meters away. An overflight on 20 August revealed an 80-m-wide inner crater that contained lava. Blocks had accumulated at the headwaters of streams on the SW, W, and NW flanks. According to a news article, 110 families were evacuated.

On 21 August 16 large explosions were detected and again caused windows to vibrate. Strong "cannon shots" were heard in areas as far as Ambato (40 km NW), Riobamba (30 km S), and Milagro, though roaring noises decreased in intensity and duration compared to the previous few days. Ash plumes rose 1.5-5 km and drifted W, and a pyroclastic flow traveled 2.5 km down the NW flank.

Geologic Summary. The steep-sided Tungurahua stratovolcano towers more than 3 km above its northern base. It sits ~140 km S of Quito, Ecuador's capital city, and is one of Ecuador's most active volcanoes. Historical eruptions have all originated from the summit crater. They have been accompanied by strong explosions and sometimes by pyroclastic flows and lava flows that reached populated areas at the volcano's base. The last major eruption took place from 1916 to 1918, although minor activity continued until 1925. The latest eruption began in October 1999 and prompted temporary evacuation of the town of Baños on the N side of the volcano.

Tungurahua Information from the Global Volcanism Program

WHITE ISLAND New Zealand 37.52°S, 177.18°E; summit elev. 321 m

On 17 August GeoNet Data Centre reported that that little to no ash was visible in the plume rising from White Island during the previous week. They also noted that seismicity was low and sulfur dioxide flux was at normal levels. The Alert Level was lowered to 1 (on a scale of 0-5), and the Aviation Colour Code remained at Yellow (second lowest on a four-color scale).

Geologic Summary. The uninhabited 2 x 2.4 km White Island, one of New Zealand's most active volcanoes, is the emergent summit of a 16 x 18 km submarine volcano in the Bay of Plenty about 50 km offshore of North Island. The 321-m-high island consists of two overlapping stratovolcanoes; the summit crater appears to be breached to the SE because the shoreline corresponds to the level of several notches in the SE crater wall. Throughout the short historical period beginning in 1826 the volcano has had long periods of continuous hydrothermal activity and steam release, punctuated by small-to-medium eruptions. Its activity also forms a prominent part of Maori legends. The most recent eruptive episode, which began on 7 March 2000, included the largest eruption at White Island in the past 20 years on 27 July.

It seems I really saw something there (11:48).

They say here (Icelandic National Radio and Television / RÚV): That a glacier run (seemingly a small one) has started in river Skaftá (South Iceland). There have been ice quakes on the seismographs, they don’t know exactly where the hypocenters are, but IMO thought it came from the (high temperature area of) Western Skaftá Cauldron which has now been confirmed by a pilot flying at noon over Vatnajökull.

At the moment, when this was written (published 12:40), the glacier run has reached a distance of 20 km from the foot of the glacier and will reach populated areas (Kirkjubaejarklaustur) this evening or early next morning. The glacier runs from the West Skaftá Cauldron are normally smaller than the ones from the Eastern Skaftá Cauldron – which will probably also come soon. People are warned not to go to near the water because of danger of poisonous gases (sulfur compounds).

Indonesia’s Tangkubanperahu volcano awakens from dormant sleep after 20 years: alert level raised
Posted on August 25, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
August 25, 2012 – INDONESIA – An increase in seismic activity at Tangkubanperahu volcano near Bandung, the capital of West Java, has been detected since 13 August and promted the Indonesian Volcanological survey (PVMBG) to increase the alert level of the volcano from 1 (normal) to 2 (alert) on 23 August. Between 1 July and 23 Aug, 264 volcanic earthquakes were recorded, which is almost double to values measured during similar periods of time at the beginning of the year. In addition, pulses of volcanic tremor could be recognized. Tangkubanperahu has 2 main craters, each about 1000 m wide and 400 m deep, filled by crater lakes, Kawah Ratu (queen) and Kawah Upas, respectively. The craters and lakes along with fumaroles and warm springs are popular tourist destinations. It is recommended not to climb the volcano’s crater, which is a popular tourist destination in the area. The last eruptions of the Tangkubanperahu were phreatic explosions in 1994. –Volcano Discovery

I allways think that major transformations in the planet will pass by a big jump in volcanic activity, as expression of alterations in core/mantle... in planet history this allready happened and is a cycle.

Activity updates of the Marum, Benbow (Ambrym) and Yasur volcanoes as observed during our volcano expedition to Vanuatu in August 2012

Saturday Aug 25, 2012 09:56 AM | Age: 8 hrs

Yasur eruption
MARUM crater (Ambrym)
The activity of AMBRYM volcano during the observation period from 07 August to 15 August 2012 was exceptionally wonderful because at the time of the ascent to the Marum crater, all the conditions (weather, wind, activity) were optimal for good observation of the boiling lava lake, which has a diameter of about 100 m.
Multiple degassing fountains in the lake generated huge lava bubbles projecting fragments of incandescent lava to the first terrace.
The second crater of Marum, Mbuelesu, had intense fumarole activity with occasional light emissions of gas and ash.

BENBOW crater (Ambrym)
The activity of the Benbow was fairly stable with a regular degassing of the lava lake. We could well see the glow of the lake reflected in the gas cloud.

YASUR volcano (Tanna)
The activity of Yasur volcano was level 1, with many Strombolian eruptions from 2 vents in the crater. The southern vent produced red, liquid lava spattering and intermittent larger explosions throwing lava bombs up to the first terrace. The second (northern) vent had more irregular eruptions, and emitted ash-rich plumes reaching about 150-200 m height. Only few incandescent bombs could be seen ejected from that vent. Ecuador on Alert Over Spewing Tungurahua Volcano

The Tungurahua volcano, an icon and symbol of sovereignty for Ecuadorians, has been registering new activity since the night of August 12, 2012, when incandescence was spotted around the crater zone, as reported by the Geophysical Institute EPN (Polytechnic National School) [es].

The volcano has been spewing pyroclastic material and ash throughout this month, affecting 3,072 families, 4,329 acres of pasture and crops, and 5,700 animals, according to Ministry of Agriculture [es] officials at the time of writing this post.

The “Report on recent activity in the Tungurahua volcano”, published on August 14 on the Geophysical Institute's official website, reported that the volcano's activity had remained “at a moderate to low level.” However, on Sunday, August 5, two moderate explosions were registered, and from then on greater activity has been recorded during the rest of the month.

a substantial increase in seismic tremor was registered, accompanied by intense bellows which in some cases caused windows in the Tungurahua Volcano Observatory (OVT) to vibrate […] in the morning moderate to significant ash fall was reported in Pillate and Cusúa (Pelileo canton) and in Choglontús (Penipe canton). Volcanic activity world-wide 25 August 2012: Tankubanperahu, Grozny, Karymski, Ambrym & Yasur, El Hierro, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Nevado del Ruiz, Batu Tara, Sakurajima

The alert level of Tangkubanperahu volcano in West Java, Indonesia, was raised to 2 (on a scale 1-4) on 23 August. An increase of earthquakes has been observed at the volcano since 13 August.

Our expedition leader and geologist Yashmin posted an update and photos on the volcanoes Ambrym and Yasur, both of which were quite active (lava lakes in Marum and Benbow, strombolian activity at Yasur) during our latest Vanuatu expedition.

The number of earthquakes at El Hierro is on the rise again. Yesterday, there were 11, today so far there have been 7 quakes. They were all very small, mostly at 10 km depth, in the western part of the island under near the El Golfo coast and some beneath the western El Julan area. There is no tremor signal associated, but El Hierro remains a volcano to watch closely.

Popocatépetl has been calming down. Only one weak explosion per 2 hours on average were observed and there are no reports of ash emissions.

Santiaguito has weak to moderate explosions with ash clouds rising 700 m. There are 4 active blocky lava flows from the dome, 2 of which are filling a river valley and produce occasional hot lahars.

Fuego has mild strombolian explosions throwing lava up to 100 m above the crater. The Taniluyá lava flow is about 200 m long, INSIVUMEH reports.

Nevado del Ruiz volcano: Swarms of small earthquakes seem to be occurring at the volcano this morning. The volcano observatory reports constant tremor and steam with some ash emissions. An SO2 plume drifting west can be seen on the latest satellite images.

Tungurahua volcano: Activity has further calmed down over the past day. Only small explosions occurred and the maximum height of the steam and ash plume above the volcano has decreased to 2 km.
The seismic signal also shows a significant decrease of volcanic tremor.

Satellite observations:
Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia) erupted again as well, this time, the ash cloud was measured to have reached only 1.8 km (6,000 ft).

Activity of Sakurajima volcano seems to be decreasing. Only one relatively small explosion (13:45 UTC today, ash to 1.8 km) was recorded by Tokyo VAAC during the past 2 days.

A possible new eruption of Grozny volcano (ETOROFU-YAKEYAMA in Japanese) on Iturup island has been reported by Tokyo VAAC who detected an ash plume rising to 13,000 ft (ca. 4.3 km) on 22:00 UTC yesterday and drifting east.

An explosion from Karymski (Kamchatka) was reported to have occurred at 02:07 UTC early today, producing an ash cloud reaching 19,000 ft (6 km) altitude. (VAAC Tokyo) [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Special Iceland Glacial Flood update 25/08 – 16:11 UTC – Vatnajökull
Earlier today a ice mass has melted due to thermal activity below the glacier of the Vatnajökull.
The origin of the melting was the Skaftárketill cauldron, an hydro-thermal area inside Hamarinn volcano
The glacial flash flood is currently going down the Skafta river towards the sea. Civil Defence Iceland reports that the flash food (bigger flow of water probably containing also ice and some toxic gases) is not really dangerous if people are staying away from the river bed.
The more important flow will normally arrive in sparsely populated areas later today, during the night or tomorrow morning.
An airplane overflying the glacier has confirmed the Jökulhlaup (Icelandic for Glacial Flood).
Jökulhlaups are a common feature in Iceland with so many volcanoes covered by ice. A Jökulhlaup does not necessarily mean an upcoming eruption but can be a step towards one. Not in this case though. At least it means that the volcano seismicity or temperature has been more active than before.
The Skafta river where the glacial flood is expected to flow, takes the melting water of nearly 1400 sq. miles. The glacial flash floods are known to have a strong sulfur smell. Since the giant eruption of the Laki volcano which filled up the broad river valley with lava, there is no longer a well defined river bed.
Road Nr. 1 passes the river but has not been closed. During the last big Jökulhlaup a few months ago, a bridge was swept away by the ice and had to be reconstructed. [link to earthquake-report.com]

Glacier flood has started from west Skaftárketill cauldron in Vatnajökull glacier
Posted on August 25, 2012 by Jón Frímann
Yesterday an glacier flood started form west Skaftárketill cauldron. But that is an hydro-thermal area inside Hamarinn volcano (Bárðarbunga volcano system). The glacier flood is expected to be small. Last year in July there was also an glacier flood from this area of Vatnajökull glacier. But that was due to minor eruption in this area (it was poorly documented by scientists. I do not know why that is). But now it is melt-water from hydro-thermal area that is causing this glacier flood.

But glacier floods like this happen every 1 to 3 years from this area. Following this glacier flood an swarm of glacier-quakes have been detected in this part of Vatnajökull glacier. Flood in western Skaftárkatli might trigger a glacier flood in the eastern skaftárkatli cauldron. But it is not known if that is actually going to happen this time. It is not expected that current glacier flood is going to be a large one. But there is an risk of Hydrogen sulfide poisoning if people are close the glacier river during the glacier flood. So it is not recommend to go close to the glacier river due to this risk. The glacier flood is expected to appear from under Vatnajökull glacier in the next 5 to 6 hours. It is expected to last around 2 to 3 days at most.
It is believed that sometimes following this type of glacier floods from this area in Vatnajökull glacier there are small eruptions, or steam events as the pressure on the hydro-thermal system drops . That in turns allows for some magma movement that is powering the hydro-thermal system in this area of Vatnajökull glacier. It is impossible to know for sure if that is going to happen now. But it is good idea to keep an eye-out for such events taking place in Hamarinn volcano. Given the minor eruption that took place there last year.

I do not expect any volcano eruption in Hamarinn volcano at this point. But such things are impossible to know for sure. As Hamarinn volcano has not been studied in details until after the year 2011 eruption.

I think I found a spectrogram for NZ volcanic quakes. And it looks like White Island is heating up for a (stronger) eruption phase: [link to www.geonet.org.nz] with HT.
