*A small heads-up.* Last three days there have been detected about 10 deep quakes in east-rim of Katla Caldera. Geologist Kristin Vogfjörð was on RUV 1 Radio News just now, explaining these show that deep lava was entering the crust, this be (possible) precursur to eruption (although se did not per se predict one, nor soon). Previously only one or two such annually had been detected. – Icelandic Spoken in this News Link (not video, Radio news), near end of brodcast…

at 18:20 to 20:07 min — says lava enters at 20 km depth — and this be dectected because of better meters, making scientists “see better what is happening”

Re: World Volcano Activity UPDATE !!! MARAPI AGAIN!!! KATLA AGAIN!!! SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!!
Today commenter Islander brought to my attention some news that the Icelandic volcano Katla seems to be picking up activity. But what is actually all the hoopla about really?

Katla is as most of you know one of the larger volcanoes on Iceland, but not the largest. The largest volcano on Iceland is the far less known Bárdarbunga volcano. Katla has been dormant since 1918, with the possible exceptions of small hydro magmatic events during 1955, 1999 and 2011. The hydro magmatic events are though not entirely proven to even have happened.

Katla has a 10 by 14km caldera that seems to have been formed during a minimum of two large VEI-6 eruptions. The volcano is covered by Myrdalsjökul glacier. During eruptions the volcano emits copious Jökulhlaups (water discharged as the volcano melts the glacier) and they are the single greatest threat from this volcano. Normally Katla has eruptions that range between VEI-3 to VEI-4, with larger eruptions happening after longer times of dormancy. Katla has had two large flood basalts after the ice age ended, the 5 500BC Hólmsá Fires and the Eldgjá eruption, both of them where following NW rifts trending roughly towards the larger volcano of Grimsvötn.

Earlier today (2012-09-29) the geologist Kristin Vogfjörð appeared on Icelandic Radio reporting that during the 24th of September a set of deep earthquakes had happened under Katla and that is considered as a sign of an increase of the risk for an eruption. She carefully avoided making any predictions.

So what happened then? Late on the 23rd 6 earthquakes ranging between 0 and 0.5M happened at depths ranging from 30 to 20 kilometers. On the 24th two more earthquakes occurred at 26 kilometers depth at the same location, those two where 0.4 and 0.7M respectively. The area is in the eastern part of the caldera.

Normally I have a deep respect for Icelandic geologists, but this is just so much hot air blowing. First of all the earthquakes are so minute that the amount of in-fluxed magma can comfortably be counted in wheelbarrows. It is like taking a piss in the ocean.

There was no associated tremor pointing towards magmatic movement of any significant scale. There is also absolutely no visible motion on the GPS stations surrounding Katla. Even at worst and these earthquakes where just precursors of a later influx we are still talking about years before an eruption taking place, and one should remember that Katla has had no less than two significant influxes of magma during the last 13 years without erupting. This so called “news” will only bring out the Katla fearmongerers, without anything having happened really.

Yepp, there went the other side of the microplate.
Now the pressure will increase even more on that poor little seismic lock under Theistareykjarbunga.

Hekla will not be affected by that. Hekla normally takes due notice of itself.
No, I am thinking about Theistareykir.

And now T the magick Lock:
[link to strokkur.raunvis.hi.is]

Seem like the entire microplate has been bending downwards at both edges and gone west with Hedinshöfn going a bit south just for good measure. The down part is new, the other motion was expected. What is not expected is that the middle part Flatöy did not budge.
And the magick Lock is going nortwest and slightly upwards. Please note, this GPS is not ideally placed to measure inflation at T, the true number should be closer to the 3cm measured before since this GPS is place on the lava field, not the actual volcano where the chamber is.

Strain, loads of strain. I only wonder if it will come in the form of a large earthquake or an uptick in inflation and more quakes in the actual volcano.

Re: World Volcano Activity UPDATE !!! MARAPI AGAIN!!! KATLA AGAIN!!! SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!!
October 2, 2012 – ANTARTICA – Heard Island on the Kerguelen Plateau in the southern Indian Ocean consists primarily of the emergent portion of two volcanic structures. The large glacier-covered composite basaltic-to-trachytic cone of Big Ben comprises most of the island, and the smaller Mt. Dixon volcano lies at the NW tip of the island across a narrow isthmus. Little is known about the structure of Big Ben volcano because of its extensive ice cover. The historically active Mawson Peak forms the island’s 2745-m high point and lies within a 5-6 km wide caldera breached to the SW side of Big Ben. Small satellitic scoria cones are mostly located on the northern coast. Several subglacial eruptions have been reported in historical time at this isolated volcano, but observations are infrequent and additional activity may have occurred. The last eruptive activity occurred at the volcanic complex in 2008. However, MODIS satellite data showed hotspots at Heard Island volcano on 21 and 24 September 2012. This suggests that there was or perhaps still is some new activity at the volcano. No further hotspots appeared on satellite data since September 24. –Volcano Discovery [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Volcanic activity world-wide 1 October 2012: Heard Island, Krakatau, Kilauea, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Tungurahua, Sakurajima

Monday Oct 01, 2012 16:09 PM | Age: 10 hrs

BY: T

MODIS satellite data showed hotspots at Heard Island volcano on 21 and 24 September 2012. This suggests that there was or perhaps still is some new activity at the volcano, although no further hotspots appeared on satellite data since 24 Sep.

Krakatau volcano is still calm, but a visitor to the volcano yesterday told us that the crater is strongly degassing.

Sakurajima volcano has picked up again the frequency of erupting with 3 explosions during the past 24 hours. Ash reached altitudes of 7-9,000 ft (2.1-2.7 km).

Popocatépetl produced 10 weak mostly steam explosions during 29-30 Sep. Crater glow is visible at night. The steam plume was less pronounced and only about 700 m high yesterday morning.

Fuego volcano continues its strombolian activity at unchanged levels, about 1 explosion every 2 hours, with ash plumes of up to 1 km height and incandescent material reaching 200 m above the crater. Shock waves are felt in up to 15 km distance during the strongest bursts. Fine ash fall occurs in nearby areas.

Santiaguito had 2 weak explosions this morning at 06:08 and 6:24 hours and a moderate one with incandescent material at 04:06 hours local time, generating ash plumes rising 600-800 m. Some lava flows are reported still active and produce small block avalanches from their fronts.

Seismicity at Tungurahua volcano remains moderate to low. Direct observations of summit activity are hindered by near constant cloud cover, but there are no indications of recent explosions or ash emissions.

At Kilauea volcano on Hawai'i, the lava flows increased their advance down the pali. One front entered the remaining kipuka within the Royal Gardens subdivision.
The flows are easily visible from the County Viewing Area located to the east in Kalapana and are becoming more into view from the west side of the flow field at the end of Chain of Craters Road. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Sometimes there is snow in hell…
Snefell had an earthquake. For those who wonder about me being a bit surprised, Snefell is a dormant volcano that is believed to be deceased. It has had no eruptions in known history, nor any other activity. So, a slight surprise.
It has named the Snefell volcanic chain in which Esjufjöll is the only member believed to be active. Other members are Thingmuli. There is another Snaefell volcano next to Esjufjöll on the brink of Jökulsarlon.

Nevado del Ruiz volcano: activity summary 24 to 30 September 2012

Wednesday Oct 03, 2012 12:05 PM | Age: 16 min

BY: T

Current seismogram from Nevado del Ruiz (OLL station, INGEOMINAS)
The volcano continues to produce strong steaming and has occasional small explosions. Seismic activity has been at generally low to intermediate levels.
Nevado del Ruiz volcano continued to have seismic activity associated mainly with rock fracturing within the volcanic edifice, which was located north, northeast, south and southeast of Arenas crater, at depths ranging from 1 to 6 km.
The highest magnitude recorded during the last week was 1.0 (Local Magnitude ML), corresponding to an earthquake that occurred on September 27 at 04:53 (local time).
Also, there was low-energy seismic activity related to fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits, located both in the Arenas crater, and to the east and southeast of it. There were further signs associated with small explosions and / or gas and ash emissions.
There is significant steaming and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission. The gas and steam column reached a maximum height of 1800 m, and mostly drifts towards N, NW and W. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Etna volcano current activity: new strombolian activity at Bocca Nuova

New strombolian activity at the Bocca Nuova

Update Mi 03 Okt 11:12
As the Facebook group Volcanoes and Volcanism detected, there is probably new eruptive activity from Etna: A screenshot of the Etna livecam shows red glow from the Bocca Nuova crater last night. This is probably due to new strombolian activity in the eastern crater of the Bocca Nuova. Between July and mid-August, weak to vigorous activity (photos) there built a new small cinder cone.

SO2 plume from Etna (and Stromboli) on 2 Oct (NOOA)

Etna is one of the most productive volcanoes in the world when it comes to SO2 output. Although no significant activity is taking place at the summit craters, there is a SO2 plume visible on NOAA's satellite images yesterday, suggesting that fresh magma is at least not far from the surface.

3.2 magnitude earthquake rattles Katla volcano

Posted on October 4, 2012

October 4, 2012 – Iceland - An earthquake of a magnitude of 3.2 hit Katla volcano, which lies underneath the Mýrdalsjökull icecap in south Iceland, just before 9:30 this morning. According to Gunnar Guðmundsson, seismologist at the Icelandic Office of Meteorology, the earthquake hit at a depth of 100 meters. Several smaller earthquakes occurred shortly before the larger one but no earthquakes have been recorded since. Gunnar says there have been quakes of this strength before in the volcano but that they are not common. There has been little activity in Katla in the last month and there is no evidence of any further developments, he adds. The glacier-covered volcano is monitored closely. A major glacial outburst flood occurred in July 2011, tearing a hole in the Ring Road in South Iceland. –Iceland Review [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Okay, I have gone through the earthquakes NNE of Grímsey.
Since I am not Lurking I can’t do a nice plot of it. But something is definitly moving those quakes upwards, the average depth get lower all the time.
If you look at the map in the link you can see the volcano marked ESE, E to NNE of Grimsey.
[link to en.vedur.is]

No, known eruption the NW of Grimsey, but it at an odd spot of the Grimsey Oblique Rift (GOR), but there is a marked uplift there from the rift depressed valley. It is most likely a central volcano that is unrelated to the other in NVZ.

Another thing I just found out. Theistareykirs known historic activity started with an uneruptive rifting episode in 1618.
[link to earthice.hi.is]

Now over to Brandsdóttir:
“Four left-stepping, en-echelon, NS-striking rift segments
(volcanic systems) exist along the GSZ.” There you have it, there are no less the for volcanoes withing the Grimsey seismic zone. Fun to be had. And as we move into the Husavik Flatöy Fault it gets even more interesting, “The southwestern margin
of the fault is characterized by NE-striking lavas which dip steeply (30–50) towards
Eyjafjarðaráll. The lavas are dissected by en echelon arrays of conjugate strike-slip
faults intersecting the HFF fault at angles of N20–30W and N20E. Some can be
traced onto land where they exhibit complicated flower patterns.”
[link to meetings.copernicus.org]

So, the harmonic tremor in the HFF a couple of days ago was probably magmatic movement following the mainly tectonic medium sized earthquake swarm last week.
The current earthquake activity in the GSZ is most likely a series of seismic rifts with following magmatic emplacements. Or in laymans terms. We might have a run up for a volcano we do not even have a name for.

I have not felt this 3.5 earthquake. Damn it.

I was coming from gardening outside at around 19:40, before a bath, haven’t felt nothing.

This swarm is occuring in the volcanic region of Bláfjoll (a long dormant volcano, that also had a major earthquake a few weeks ago, near Reykjavik). This time something is brewing a bit southwest, that could be the spot of a future fissure eruption. The depth is less than last time. Eruptions there could result in large volumes of lava (with some ash production possible – just there seems to be some ash deposits in the area south of Bláfjoll). The good thing is that the lava would fall down to less inhabited lands.

Carl: this is curious, you just said yesterday that would be your favourite site for an Icelandic eruption. Well, its getting in that direction
