Not yet. But it is worth going back to an article that Erik had on a USGS report about likely areas for activity in Yellowstone. Right now, what I find interesting is that there was a relatively deep quake at about 10 km, and the later quakes are in the 6 to 8 km range. If I remember correctly, that’s mush area.

A few years ago, there was a swarm that dropped off deeper as time went on. My guess is that was some sort of subsidence. Right now it’s too early to tell what’s up. It could just be flexure, as the thing is prone to do.

I can’t say one way or the other whether it’s tectonic or not. I don’t have that skill set. It most likely is, but I poke around at stuff just like you do.

A swarm started in Bardarbunga volcano in Iceland, near Kistufell field. This is quite an area prone to earthquakes but also might be nearing an eruption according to Icelandic scientists. Its also near the exact center of the Icelandic hotspot. Largest quake was a 3.0 and a few larger than 2.0

If a earthquake larger than 3 would occur near Katla, everyone would jump saying “hey that’s an earthquake in Katla, bla bla, eruption nearing, bla bla”.

Now we have a earthquake similarwise in Bardarbunga and no one comments, to my surprise. Oh poor Bardarbunga. Why we ignore Bardarbunga? This is a more dangerous volcano than Katla, its eruptions are much larger, sometimes by ash, mostly often by largest amounts of running lava in the entire world. It is the widest, tallest and largest caldera, and also largest volcanic system in Iceland. It holds the record of largest lava field on Earth since ice-age, largest and tallest shield volcano in Iceland. Also the largest ash eruption since settlement, the Vatnaoldur eruption. Its the bigger brother of Grimsvotn. Also sleeping now for far longer time than Katla or Hekla. Hence it is truly forgotten, ignored, unknown. But considered last decade we are having many more earthquakes there, and especially deep ones, compared to Hekla, Katla, Krisuvik or Askja.

Its very unfair that so many people only talk of the slighest earthquake at Katla or Hekla, while Bardarbunga is probably the most forgotten volcano in Iceland. So much for the only largest of all in Iceland, that holds most of the records!

To media: this is not yet a sign of any future eruption. But its getting more restless the volcano.

Hail, Bardarbunga!
That’s the center of Icelandic hotspot, where the crust is thicker and lying above the depths where it has been speculated there is a ‘twisted’ plate. When it goes, the whole Iceland will go boom!

Colombia’s Cerro Machín volcano rattled by more tremors – volcanic swarms reported Iceland, US, Canary Islands

Posted on October 15, 2012

October 15, 2012 – COLOMBIA - According to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Manizales, an earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale occurred yesterday at 11:54 am. The statement also notes that the incident “is associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic edifice.” The volcano-tectonic earthquake was presented to the southeast of the main dome at a depth of 12.33 miles. Although the movement was felt in the district Tapias, rural Ibagué, Eduardo Rodríguez, director of the Departmental Committee for Risk Management, confirmed that no emergencies have been reported so far. The Cerro Machin volcano alert remains yellow. There have been three earthquakes reported in the vicinity of the volcano within a week. On Sunday two movements were recorded at 9:32 and 9:35 pm with a magnitude of 4.6 and 3.9 on the Richter scale, respectively, located 12 kilometers southeast of depth to the main dome. The two municipalities where the tremors were felt are Cajamarca and Ibague. Cerro Machin last erupted 800 years ago. –Elnuevodia (translated)

El Hierro: It seems a new earthquake swarm has started at El Hierro volcano yesterday, when the number of quakes rose from an average of about 8-10 to 23 quakes per day. Today, so far there have been 14 events recorded, and their number is likely to rise further. The quakes are very small (mostly under M1, largest M2.0) and are concentrated at about 10 km depth in the western El Golfo and scattered in the SW part of the island at greater depths.

Iceland: A new earthquake swarm occurred over the weekend on the Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula, on the volcanic rift zone about 12 km SW of Brenisteinsfjöll volcano. The largest quake was a M3.8 event at 5 km depth on Friday at 19:42 UTC.

Yellowstone: A minor seismic swarm occurred at Yellowstone, but falls into what is normal activity at a large active caldera. -Volcano Discovery [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Klyuchevskoy volcano erupts in Kamchatka

Posted on October 15, 2012

October 15, 2012 – KAMCHATKA – The Klyuchevskoy volcano, the highest active volcano in Eurasia, has started erupting in Kamchatka, in the Russian Far East. The luminescence over the volcano summit is evidence that glowing lava is flowing in the crater. The volcano may start blowing out ash any moment now. The Level of Concern Colour Code has been raised to Yellow, which is a potential danger warning for aircraft. The giant volcano last erupted from September 2009 to December 2010, and it began to again wake up in June this year. Klyuchevskoy volcano is 4,750 meters above sea. –VOR [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Katla eruption levees in South Iceland checked

Posted on October 16, 2012

October 16, 2012 – ICELAND – Chief of Police in Hvolsvöllur, a representative of the Icelandic Road Administration and geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson will discuss at a meeting on Thursday whether the levees to the east of Vík, which lies across the Ring Road near the river Múlakvísl, must be raised to prove effective in case of a volcanic eruption in Katla. Geologist Ari Trausti Guðmundsson stated in an article in Morgunblaðið yesterday that it is important to raise the levees judging by the information available on the volume and depth of flooding from Katla, ruv.is reports. The volcano lies underneath the Mýrdalsjökull icecap and a volcanic eruption is likely to cause a major glacier outburst. The levees are the responsibility of the Icelandic Road Administration and according to a report conducted by Einar Hafliðason, a representative of the Road Administration, last spring there was no need to raise the levees given the conditions at hand. The levees are now five meters high and 4,000-5,000 meters long. Scientists are monitoring the volcano closely due to ongoing seismic activity. –Iceland Review [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Volcanic activity world-wide 15 October 2012: Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Karymski, Klyuchevskoi, Nyiragongo, Sakurajima, El Hierro, Manam

Monday Oct 15, 2012 21:17 PM | Age: 17 hrs

BY: T

Activity of Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico is on a slightly increasing trend with 48 exhalations of low to medium intensity during 14-15 Oct, some of which were accompanied by small emissions of ash. The largest produced plumes rising 1.5 km above the crater. Crater glow is visible at night.

The lava flow from Fuego volcano in Guatemala is now 600 m long, and there are only few weak explosions with ash plumes about 400 m height.

Santiaguito had a small explosion this morning at 06:01 local time. Otherwise, the lava dome has been steaming and the fronts of the lava flows remain weakly active.

A small swarm of earthquakes occurred today at the center of El Hierro volcano.

An eruption of Manam volcano in Papua New Guinea produced an ash plume rising to 10,000 ft / 3 km altitude earlier today.

A strong SO2 plume is visible from Nyiragongo and/or neighboring Nymuragira volcano in the DR Congo.

A hot spot continues to be visible at Karymski volcano in Kamchatka and a possible small eruption with ash to 13,000 ft / 4 km altitude occurred today at 13:00 h GMT.

Sakurajima volcano has been quieter with only a smaller explosion during the past 24 hours.

New strombolian activity from Klyuchevskoi volcano was reported by KVERT. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Volcano Eruption in Japan on Tuesday, 16 October, 2012 at 18:37 (06:37 PM) UTC.

Description
An underwater volcanic eruption was detected Wednesday morning close to Minami-Iwoto island in the Pacific Ocean and an expert speculated that the eruption could form a permanent island. A coast guard vessel spotted a white plume of smoke rising from the sea about three miles north-northeast of the island. It was the first time since July 2005 that volcanic smoke had been detected in the area, which is located about 745 miles south of central Tokyo. According to an announcement by the 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters of the Japan Coast Guard, based in Yokohama, the volcano spewed ash and smoke about 100 meters into the air, and the surrounding sea area changed to a yellowish-green color while other parts became a cloudy gray. According to the Meteorological Agency, the volcano, known as Fukutokuokanoba, has erupted seven times since 1904, when its activities were first recorded. On three occasions, land masses were formed, but all later sank below the waterline. Tokyo Institute of Technology Prof. Kenji Nogami, an expert in geoscience, said: "In the 1986 eruption, a new island appeared after lava accumulated. The island was washed away by waves, but seabed upheaval reduced the water depth to 22 meters in 1999. It's possible that this (recent) volcanic activity could form a permanent island."

But its getting more restless the volcano.

nice. my prior thoughts about the UK being a nice safe place to live are now WELL and truly buried! (by volcanic ash!)

Uturuncu is something of a scary critter. Taking the InSAR imagery released at about the same time as recent press release, doing all the gizmo stuff mentioned earlier in order to derive the uplift, I get a new set of numbers after considering the depth localization put out in this paper:

“Recent crustal deformation in west-central South America” Thesis by
Matthew E. Pritchard towards his PhD.

He states that the center of uplift is in the 22 to 24 km depth range. Tossing that in the model and running various sized chambers, I get a volume increase (average) of between 2.04 x 10^7 m³/yr to 2.15 x 10^07 m³/yr. (0.0204 km³ to 0.0215 km³)

These averages are of the volumes needed to yield the observed uplift at 0, 10, 20, 30 km distances from the center of the uplift. (which is an interpretation of the InSAR graphic)

The paper was submitted 5/12/2003, and seems to indicate that this has been going on at least that long. His InSAR data uses imagery from 1992 through 2000 for his estimated uplift rates of 1 to 2 cm/yr. If those hold closer to being the truth, then my values are out to lunch. (much too small)

For sake of argument. (another way of hinting at an assumption), if my calculated rates are typical back to 1992, then the volume entering the system over the last 20 years is 0.408 to 0.430 km.³

If the inflation rates that he has derived are more accurate, then I’m probably off by a factor of about 2.5 or so. That would make it in excess of 1.02 to 1.07 km³ of volume increase over the last 20 years.

I do recommend poking around in that paper. He covers uplift in other sites such as Cerro Blanco, Lazufre, and Hualca Hualca.

Scientists link rapid geomagnetic field reversal, climate change, and supervolcanic eruptions to same geological time period

Posted on October 17, 2012

October 17, 2012 – GEOLOGY - An extremely brief reversal of the geomagnetic field, climate variability and a supervolcanic eruption. 41,000 years ago, a complete and rapid reversal of the geomagnetic field occurred. Magnetic studies of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences on sediment cores from the Black Sea show that during this period, during the last ice age, a compass at the Black Sea would have pointed to the south instead of north. Moreover, data obtained by the research team formed around GFZ researchers Dr. Norbert Nowaczyk and Prof. Helge Arz, together with additional data from other studies in the North Atlantic, the South Pacific and Hawaii, prove that this polarity reversal was a global event. Their results are published in the latest issue of the scientific journal “Earth and Planetary Science Letters.” What is remarkable is the speed of the reversal: “The field geometry of reversed polarity, with field lines pointing into the opposite direction when compared to today’s configuration, lasted for only about 440 years, and it was associated with a field strength that was only one quarter of today’s field,” explains Norbert Nowaczyk. “The actual polarity changes lasted only 250 years. In terms of geological time scales, that is very fast.” During this period, the field was even weaker, with only 5% of today’s field strength. As a consequence, the Earth nearly completely lost its protection shield against hard cosmic rays, leading to a significantly increased radiation exposure. This is documented by peaks of radioactive beryllium (10Be) in ice cores from this time, recovered from the Greenland ice sheet. 10Be as well as radioactive carbon (14C) is caused by the collision of high-energy protons from space with atoms of the atmosphere. The polarity reversal now found with the magnetisation of Black Sea sediments has already been known for 45 years. It was first discovered after the analysis of the magnetisation of several lava flows near the village Laschamp near Clermont-Ferrand in the Massif Central, which differed significantly from today’s direction of the geomagnetic field. Since then, this geomagnetic feature is known as the ‘Laschamp event.’ However, the data of the Massif Central represent only some point readings of the geomagnetic field during the last ice age, whereas the new data from the Black Sea give a complete image of geomagnetic field variability at a high temporal resolution. Besides giving evidence for a geomagnetic field reversal 41,000 years ago, the geoscientists from Potsdam discovered numerous abrupt climate changes during the last ice age in the analyzed cores from the Black Sea, as it was already known from the Greenland ice cores. This ultimately allowed a high precision synchronization of the two data records from the Black Sea and Greenland. The largest volcanic eruption on the Northern hemisphere in the past 100 000 years, namely the eruption of the super volcano 39400 years ago in the area of today’s Phlegraean Fields near Naples, Italy, is also documented within the studied sediments from the Black Sea. The ashes of this eruption, during which about 350 cubic kilometers of rock and lava were ejected, were distributed over the entire eastern Mediterranean and up to central Russia. These three extreme scenarios, a short and fast reversal of the Earth’s magnetic field, short-term climate variability of the last ice age and the volcanic eruption in Italy, have been investigated for the first time in a single geological archive and placed in precise chronological order. –Science Codex [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

New Submarine Eruption at Fukutoku-Okanoba

Wednesday Oct 17, 2012 10:50 AM | Age: 1 hrs

BY: VOLCANOBULLETIN

An underwater volcanic eruption was detected on Tuesday morning, October 16th by a Coast Guard Vessel near Minami-Iwoto Island.

The Coast Guard vessel said that a column of white smoke was seen rising from the sea about 3 miles from Minami-Iwoto island.

An announcement by the Coast Guard stated that Fukutoku-Okanoba "the volcano spewed ash and smoke about 100 meters into the air, and the surrounding sea area changed to a yellowish-green color while other parts became a cloudy gray"

Possibilities have been raised that a permanent island could form. All news about: Fukutoku-Okanoba volcano

Nice link.

I’ve noted that the Laschamp event was coincidental with some serious activity in Italy, but like that link, I don’t have anything other than time coincidence to go on.

One idea that I have is that fast movement of magma as the system changes/adjust/leads upto the large eruptions. It’s not the only known geomagnetic excursion, but it is the best known.

There are several points of view about them, but here is one that I sort of like:

(Wikipedia)

In computer simulations, it is observed that magnetic field lines can sometimes become tangled and disorganized through the chaotic motions of liquid metal in the Earth’s core. In such cases, this spontaneous disorganization can cause decreases in the magnetic field as perceived at the Earth’s surface. In truth, under this scenario, the Earth’s magnetic field intensity does not significantly change in the core itself, but rather energy is transferred from a dipole configuration to higher order multipole moments which decay more rapidly with the distance from the Earth’s core, so that the expression of such a magnetic field at the surface of the Earth would be considerably less, even without significant changes in the strength of the deep field.
