Phobos Grunt may drop today.
Elevation nearing Zero. Dropped to -2.9. Struggling to make it back up over 100 miles altitude. I have a good feeling today is the day.

sorry, but elevation is the angle that you have to look at, altitude is the real thing

ALTITUDE [km]: 164.87
ALTITUDE [mi]: 102.45
however, as somebody posted the other night the speed will indicate the "FALL" as it will increase at the moment is the same (roughly) as the other night
SPEED [km/s]: 7.51
SPEED [mi/s]: 4.67

Re: Phobos Grunt may drop today.
Yea ya know i wasn't sure what the elevation thing was all about. thanks for the info. seems like it's struggling to get above 100 miles and drops relatively quick to roughly 88 last time around. isn't the atmosphere entry around 60-65 miles?

not sure how the angle thing you mention makes sense. now that i think about what you said, are you saying that if the elevation is 0 you need to look parallel to the ground to see it? i'm lost. i was told that when the elevation reaches zero it is entering our atmosphere.

No offense taken. Glad I could help.

If you are interested, here is my thread on Phobos.

That makes sense. I'm looking at it like, "okay it's up to almost 80 right now in elevation there is no way that has to do with atmosphere re-entry."

Thanks.

Watch it as it approaches the equator it will drop a solid 10 miles. Earth is fatter there.

Actually it usually starts rising right before the equator (recently at about -2.7 LAT]

I posted this on another site. These are my notes and thoughts, Planetbarb.
RE The time PHOBOS-GRUNT will come down, according to the Russian Space Web, the craft is supposed to hit earth 21:51 Jan 15 MOSCOW TIME.
PHOBOS-GRUNT UPDATE 14 January 2012.
I posted some links to time zone changes, farther below.
Time differences: Moscow time is UTC+04
New York Time EST is UTC minus 05:00 — so there is a nine hour time difference between New York and Moscow.
FOR EXAMPLE: If it is 21:51 Moscow Time Jan 15 it is nine hours behind that, in New York EST. That's 1200 Hours, 51 minutes - or 12:51 PM EST the 15th.

By Jan. 14, Russian space agency shifted the expected impact area for the debris from Phobos-Grunt reentry to the Southern Pacific, off the coast of Chile. The spacecraft was now expected to crash around 21:51 Moscow Time on Jan. 15. The impact area shifted half way around the world in the past three days, however with the perigee (lowest point) of the probe's orbit located around 46 degrees South latitude, forecasters narrowed down the reentry and impact area for Phobos-Grunt somewhere over South America.
