Right lets count the countries.

12 000 troops in Malta en route to Libya.

100 specialists in Uganda

5 officers in South Sudan

? headed for Nigeria

? in theater Liberia

A dozen personnel Ivory Coast

I could go on. Is AFRICOM staging a slow invasion? Few personnel at first to establish a base. Then specialists to iron out the wrinkles and finally the troops to project a presence.

Am I Wrong? Is this just how its done? I think the US is spreading its power to thinly, using mercenaries and local terror groups to bolster its ranks.

We know how this worked out for the Romans.

Hannibal? His the one with the elephants that came over the Alps right? Helps to have the element of surprise and a kick-ass animal one might mistaken for a tank.

Re: Is There A Slow US Invasion Of Central Africa Underway?
Simple.

1.China is into southern Africa in a big way and looking north.
2.Somalia has control of a sea-faring oil choke point.
3. South Sudan, Libya and Nigeria have massive sweet crude deposits.
4.Ivory Coast has coffee and cocoa. (It is also a waypoint for Afgan opium/heroine)
5.Uganda is the gateway to the rare Coltan deposits in eastern DRC.

Whats Coltan? [link to en.wikipedia.org]

Its all about comodities and oil security, both for US domestic consumption and the ability to deny China access to these resources.

There are more reasons, but these stand out as reason enough to make the investment in this 'excursion'.
