Correctional Officer. In NC, you must be at least 18 years of age, high school graduate (or G.E.D.) and no criminal convictions.

Think about what you would like to do and then do not think about how much it pays.

That's the back plan. The front plan is just to get some income again. :(

I quit my good paying job last week (computer programmer). I was tired of being a slave. I have nothing else lined up either. If I have to get income again I will look into security agent or something like that (but that would put me under slavery again).

What ever it is that you would enjoy doing, and that it would be a blast if you got paid for doing it, then walk in the door like you own the place (with the same amount of humility), and tell them you are here to give them your self for the day, for free. And if they like your work, then hire you full time. Give them a whole week if you need to, but be careful not to get taken advantage of.

You could advertise your skills/talents on free classified ads such as Kijiji or whatever else is out there in cyberspace.

You may also want to try this if you have a few bucks to spend:

Advertise in your local newspaper both hardcopy and online -create an eye-catching slogan or something like that.

Get eye-catching business cards printed.

Media Relations. If you think that you have done something special or unique with your work, send a press release to magazines, newspapers, radio stations and online newsgroups. This kind of exposure is free and will help increase public awareness of you and your work. The media is always looking for new and interesting stories, so you may get the chance of being exposed and for free!

Attend shows. It is important to show up whenever a show or an art fair is on. This way you can get your name out and this is also a good opportunity to make contacts.

Get the Employer Hooked!

It’s all about keywords, jargon, conciseness and highlighting the correct words to grab the attention of the employer who is always in a hurry. These recruiters only have 30 seconds at most to glance or browse through your resume. So what would make them stay and read its entirety? Focus on your skills and your qualifications. Always ask yourself, “What would make me suitable for this position?” or better yet, “What can I contribute to this organization?” The answer to these questions should be the center of your resume but summarize them through keywords and highlights. You do not need to provide explicit details - that is what the interview is for! The goal of a well-prepared resume is for you to keep the recruiter interested that they will invite you for an interview.

All this bashing on HR...who's HR anyway?

We have 11 people here. I do the majority of the hiring here and I also chase sales leads, do the occasional field work, special projects, employee training, etc. Many hats.

I use a resume to keep track of who's who. And it tells me who's done what and when for how long. It's not a little thing nor just for HR folks. (most small businessed don't have a HR people; only an HR drawer in the filing cabinet.)

Anyway, find what you love to do and find someone who needs that skill. The enthusiasm alone should set you apart from the rest. And be the squeaky wheel. I'd much rather hire the person who has stopped by every couple of weeks for months to se if I have an opening than the guy papering every shop in town.

cheers

banana2 Wake up early, go out all day putting in applications and talking to people. do this everyday and you will get a job. unless you are a complete loser
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8449464

^^^^this times a hundred

Get up early in the morning, take a shower and shave, put on some stink pretty, dress nicely, clean your shoes, you know, act like you care. Then hit the pavement. Take a lunch with you and a stack of resumes'. Hit every business you see that has employees. Take time to talk to people about who may be hiring. Do this all day, not a half hour or so, all day, that's why you took a lunch. If at the end of the day you're still unemployed do it again the next day and the next day until you find a job.

The key is to find a job. It may not be the one you really want but it's a job. A place to start. You can network as you go and hopefully find one you like but the key is to find a job.

If you'll do this, unless you're just dumber than a brick or a complete dipstick, you'll find a job.
 Quoting: Suddenly

Thanks. ltana I don't think I'm dumber than a brick or a complete dipstick, ALTHOUGH I have seen such folks get hired or remain employed for years and years, while the hard working brains lose their jobs.

I advise you to go to a 1 or 2 yr community college (think phlebotomy tech, rad tech, surgical tech, lab tech, med tech, medical transcription, medical billing etc...anything medical!)

Depending on your status (sorry..havent read your entire thread..time constraints because I'm employed & on the job ~ no pun intended!) you may get tuition help/grants/loans/scholarships.

Other alternatives (quick ca$h depending on your talents) are waiter/waitress; bartender; home repair/improvement; vehicle repair; babysitting; substitute teaching - from preschool to high school...a test required in most states but nothing too tough; factory work if you can find an opening (doubtful); clerk in a store/mall; online sales of artwork or cast-offs;
security work (night shift is biggy)

Write a novel; write kid's stories; <--- that sort of thing takes time to manifest but can pay off big.

Good luck, OP.
Love hugs and prayers for a better tomorrow headed your way.
