"Also proposed as a possible route for atmospheric interaction with the lake's environment are what are being labeled "geothermal boils". These are thousands of bubbles in the ice sheet located in the some 200 sq. miles of "ice dunes" discovered by the late Russian scientist Ivan Toskovoi who was stationed at Vostok research base until his disappearance in March 2000. The surveyed bubbles range from a few to several hundred feet in diameter. "

Quite possibly just as exciting as all of the data related so far, is the discovery through Magnetic Imaging that there is an extremely powerful source of magnetic energy located at the North end of the lake's shoreline. As of this writing, no one has suggested an explanation for the magnetic "anomaly".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (same source as above though)
Dear Mr. Mason:
Thank you for this fascinating information.
I had previously considered informing the Vostok investigators, Russian,UK,US, that there was a severe hazard that above the water there would most likely be a large amount of methane, and breaking into that would be very hazardous. It may of course be so large an amount that letting it out would make a severe change of atmospheric chemistry, and hence of climate.
The bubbles in the ice, the large dome, and the magnetic anomaly all point to such a situation. Most permafrost regions have methane underneath them, and this would be by far the largest of them. May be the scientist who vanished crashed into a methane ice bubble. Large deposits of magnetite are common in methane-rich regions, being produced from iron oxides acting as oxygen donor to microbes that live on the oxidation of methane.
Type "blood falls" into Youtube, this is the type of water I imagine them finding. The sources I have read have said that they are worried about the methane release once the lake has been breached.
I don't know if anyone else has brought this up, but I have read a date that the lake is reached that is different from today as I have seen talked about in the thread.
I have read it would be reached in December this year 2012.
Re: All Eyes on Lake Vostok...To Be Breached Today!!!
This week, a Russian team drilling into Lake Vostok in the center of the Antarctic continent is likely to break through the ice to water. It will be the first time that a subglacial lake has been breached. These modern-day explorers hope to discover whether Vostok, which at 5000 km 3 is the third largest lake on the planet, is teeming with hidden, cold-loving life that could have evolved separately from the rest of the world for hundreds of thousands of years.
Microbiologist John Priscu of Montana State University in Bozeman, who was one of the original planners of the Vostok mission, has been getting regular updates from the Russian team. As of 13 January, they had reached a depth of 3737.5 meters, about 15 meters away from liquid water. With three teams drilling around the clock and making progress at an average of 2 meters per day, Priscu says they're on track to break through within the week. "This is an epic event. I really wish them luck," he says. "I wish I was out there with them."
After drilling 3720 meters last February, time ran out for the team and the project was stymied just 29.5 meters from its destination as winter set in. Over the summer, they modified their drill bits and now the team is back at work with plenty of time to spare. They had left the large hole filled with antifreeze, so it was ready and waiting for them. It will remain open for years to come, Priscu says, potentially allowing other teams to sample the waters in the future.
It's a nerve-wracking moment for the drillers, however. The lake water is under immense pressure, making it imperative that the team's calculations are correct. In the worst case scenario, Priscu says, "water could come up the hole and degas explosively, blowing out the whole borehole."
[link to news.sciencemag.org]
Obviously, this is uncharted territory, a first for mankind.
sounds like many things could go wrong. I wish them all the best!
This is incredible news! For 14 millian years it has been sealed under the ice. If life exists in Lake Vostok it will further the evidence that life can exist elsewhere in the cosmos, such as Jupiter's moon Europa and beyond.
If the Russians stay on schedule, they should breach the lake by tomorrow!
I can't wait to hear about their findings.
Wow, I thought this thread was over and headed to the Abyss when I bumped it this morning. Glad it found new legs.
I am wondering why this is not in the media in any form at all, as it will be a historic event, even if they find nothing. Its not even on Drudge, and we all know they shop GLP for stories. Odd to say the least.
All kidding aside.
Some wonder if an alien object is down there.
Consider the magnetic flux lines flowing into the area. Orbital objects could easily be entrained towards the poles just as particles forming aurorae are.
A ZP machine riding on magnetic flux could venture via these pathways.
Old orbiting monolithic materials could transit along these pathways.
All potential BS, but fun thinking about it.
Because ultimately it would slow down their goal. They are going to drill and they dont want the public to form an opinion that may hender their chance at history.
Not sure if this has been posted from the chat session, but is says samples won't be taken until next year. And, it will be done by a core drill. So, they don't intend, at least for the moment, to invade the lake. They will let the lake, invade the drill hole.
"The Russian project to drill into and sample the lake is a very interesting one and also one that many scientists are watching. As part of the plan to avoid contamination, their plan is to use a small drill to penetrate the lake and let water move up into the hole for 50 meters or so - then they will let that water freeze. Then next year it will be drilled with a core drill. The idea and hope is that this will yield samples of the water in the lake, and any microbes that might be there.
Re: All Eyes on Lake Vostok...To Be Breached Today!!!
Maybe this is why they are really there...
“You know, they have classified Lake Vostok. They took it away from JPL who were monitoring it. Are you familiar with Lake Vostok in Antarctica? Under the ice in Antarctica there is a fresh-water lake deep, deep down under the ice, that’s 100 miles long and 50 miles wide. Fresh water. The temperature in the damn lake is about 65 degrees, which is pleasant swimming, you might say.
“But at the end of Lake Vostok is what’s known as a gigantic masscon—a mass concentration of metal, very similar to the masscons they discovered on the Moon — a gigantic, circular-shaped, metallic object deep under the ice at the end of Lake Vostok. The National Security Agency took it away from JPL. It’s one of the most sensitive things in the world now, the anomaly at the end of the lak. It’s now classified, top secret.”
[link to www.exohuman.com]
What could this be???
 Quoting: RazorX 1378340
so u think they are doing this to find a ufo?
 Quoting: ttowngirl
Very interesting stuff coming up now. We have a magnetic mascon at the lake which is highly classified, and our magnetosphere seems to generate from this same area. Couple that with the Nazi's ufo base, somewhere in the vicinity, and we have the stuff GLP dreams are made of.
This story seems weird to me. I don't pretend to know anything about drilling at those depths but why does it take 24 hours to drill down just 2 meters in ice? I guess I could see if it were solid rock or something like that but ice? Heck my little ice auger can cut an 8" hole through 24 inches of ice in under a minute.
 Quoting: Hawgzilla
Trillions of tonnes of ice a few miles deep has a lot of compaction. I'm sure that drilling through that ice is like drilling through rock.
The ice you auger for ice fishing is much softer than Antarctic ice!
I am beyond confused, but I guess this is what happens when you forget to follow threads that interest you (for example, the Bezerk and Chinese Briefcase threads, a hundred pages later.)
When this thread was posted, I saw the title and went: "Yikes!"...immediately envisioning the potential doom of a massive escape of methane. My interest was excited.
But, upon reading the first page and reading more at the links, we were being told the lake contained a rich concentration of oxygen, and that they were trying to insure that the drill's breach would NOT allow contamination of this ancient, unique, biosphere that they were hoping to discover.
That sounded plausible, so I put aside my methane 'worries,' although I wished I was educated enough to understand HOW they could figure out there was oxygen-rich fresh water, yet, not know if it held any lifeforms.
The off-site page offered other links, where I then read about the bizarre magnetic anomalies, and, that ginormous metallic object, found about the same time that drilling started. BUT...
...having read in the first article that due to drill failure (if I am remembering this correctly) the drilling project had to be abandoned for 8 YEARS: all of this started to sound a bit fishy to me...as someone who visits GLP might be prone to consider. I never read the remaining pages, having turned my attentions elsewhere.
NOW I come back to page 13, and see a letter WARNING about METHANE.
I guess I have a lot of reading to catch up on tonight, before making another comment......
Wow, I missed a shit load!
Thanks SS and El Q for asking very insightful and relevant questions to the experts in chat! Glad they were so forth coming.
Were they though?
From the information I have They were 12 meters from breaching on January 13th, approximately drilling at 2 meters per day.
The Borg said it may be weeks?
That can't be right. Wish I was there for the Q & A.
 Quoting: Esoteric Morgan
There are many stories out there about what is truly under the ice and between the lake.
Most believe that there is a huge pocket of oxygen between the bottom of the ice shelf and the lake. Some say methane because of all the hydrothermal activity that has been mapped and detected near and around there.
I would speculate that it's a guessing game since this is uncharted territory. I only hope that they have all contingencies well planned for.
I read that, but I believe that was from last year.
They drilled to within 120 meter last year and took core samples. They found microbes in the core sample some species of which were not known.
This year, was to traverse the last 120 meters to breach the lake.
