Who else wants to pack a bag, leave town & start life over somewhere new? Has anyone done it? Can it even be done these days?

Who else wants to pack a bag, leave town & start life over somewhere new? Has anyone done it? Can it even be done these days?
I am so sick and tired of my 'just getting by' existence and I feel much of it has to do with my location (midwest). I travel a lot for work, but fall into a depressing nightmare when I'm home. I've always said I work to live, not live to work, but the problem is I'm not living. Any advice/experience would be appreciated!

I am thinking the same thing.. I would have to give up my job here and find one where I decided to move..hard to do.. I am not sure where I would go or if I would be happy there.. Hmmm...a conundrum.

We did it. Sold our home and moved with no job, no home and three small children to the mountains. After 6 months, you would never know we had not been here all along. You've just got to go for it. Life is too short!

Dude, or dudette, just watch the Investigation Discovery channel for that info. All the shows are about people either disappearing or running away and that shit. Plenty of people have started over anew and are still pulling it off apparently, so give it a shot!

In the process of moving now- takes a long time- It can be done, but, it takes some thought and process. I have been working on it for nearly a year. If you are serious and want to talk about it, you can contact me. I have done a fair amount of research on countries and stuff. Good luck!

The question is the problem for you.

The decision is the solution.
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness. Like resignation to the end, always the end.

Just a little happiness and health is all I wanted.

I can live anywhere as long as I can commute by airline to get to work, so I could easily keep my current job. My biggest issue is my credit & financing a big move. (credit got ruined by bankruptcy & rental history got ruined by exhusband.)
How did those of you that accomplished it, do it? I agree life is too short- I am battling health issues and dream of being somewhere beautiful (like Hawaii, yeah right). I look out my window now & see crumbling warehouses, trains, homeless people and wonder why, when I can live anywhere I'm here. Then I realize it all takes $$.
I could jump on a plane tomorrow, fly somewhere for free, but have no $$ to get started wheni arrive. It's like the carrot on the string.

to answer the first of your three questions - YES.

However, I also believe that "wherever you go, there you are."

If I get out of here, I'll be starting new somewhere else with the same problems.

Search "owner financing" options in the area you want to move. If you don't go through a bank and can show that you earn a steady income, most people are happy to work with you...that or get a job where housing is provided (i.e. run a bed and breakfast in some resort community).

What? PHL has the (still high) east coast housing prices, hight murder rates, minimal job prospects outside of PHL and the traffic congestion into PHL is just abysmal. There have got to be better places.

I think about it all the time. If I had someone to go "with" me it might happen.

I tried to get some land far out of town but it didnt go through, couldnt find water.

Not giving up though, just cant imagine doing it alone. Just like most of us here, our friends and familily think I have lost it...

Not an easy thing and it takes a lot of courage.

I do agree, however my surroundings seem to have emotional effects on me. I'm sensitive to more than just environmental effects (such as pollution), but also the emotions of the people around me. This whole city (KC) is very lost on an empathetic, humanist level IMO. I feel an energy when I am in the mountains or near the pacific that transforms my attitude. It's hard to describe; it's like my spirit has lifted from the pit of my stomach and flown to the crown of my head. Chakras, whatever you want to call it. I felt the most at home with myself in Maui, like I had lived there before.

I've done it OP, and it worked out quite well for me.

Stuffed everything I owned and left with $600 in my pocket.

Ended up 2500 miles away and just started life over.

It was actually the best thing that happened to me (until I met my wife).

I highly recommend it to anyone.

I watched the movie Another Earth last night. It was trippy for sure. It got me wondering-what would I think of me, if I was from another dimension where my life went another direction. I'd probably be pretty disappointed in myself.

I currently live in Central Iowa, I've lived in this area over 17 years. I hate it with a passion.

If I had my way, I would move to the Duluth, MN area or along the north shore. Really pretty up there, I love the lake & the wildlife.

5-600 month? compared to renting a shitty apartment with shitty neighbors??

You're not driving the thing around town cruising for chicks, theres no cost of fuel if you find a camping spot or rent an RV spot.

It's not free but it is the ultimate in FREEDOM..I don;t like my neighbors or the scenery, conveniences of a town..I don;t have to pack, pay any deposits, I just button it up in 10 minutes and I'm off to find a better spot..every city in every state has rv campgrounds, most all offer long term space rentals..

Re: Who else wants to pack a bag, leave town & start life over somewhere new? Has anyone done it? Can it even be done these days?
It depends on what you're talking about doing. Do you want to lead the life of a drifter, or just move to a new town? And how... completely... for lack of a better word, do you want to do it?

I did it 5 or 6 years ago. I maxed out all my cards and lines of credit and took as much cash as possible, the rest I used to buy stuff I would need. Then I blew town and drifted for awhile living on my cash and prizes burniing all bridges behind me. When that ran out I settled in a new town and found a job.

I don't know if that's going to be so easy today with no jobs anywhere. The drifting part would be easy, everybody is doing that these days. You wont have trouble meeting people like youself out on the road.

People tell me I'm a likeable sort, for people like that, finding jobs is easy. Everybody who meets you want's to be your friend, and they all want to hire you. If you're that kind of person you won't have any trouble. Your life is going to change though. It's like you went right back to the bottom of the crap heap and started over fresh out of high school again. That's something you better think about. What are you willing to give up to do it?
