They say the breach is imminent AGAIN. "The team also face the risk of an explosion with oxygen and nitrogen trapped below. They are trying to make sure only a small amount of air can escape to avert the risk" "The worst possible scenario could be the water suddenly shooting up through the hole when the breakthrough is made. Up to a quarter of the lake's water could shoot out of the hole, John Priscu said, if the worst fears are realised" Will they push harder to complete the job before others, and risk the contamination? good chance.... Peace Or could this mean something else? When they announce the "unfortunate Vostok accident" in the next few days, all the excuses will be in place: shoddy equipment, unsound drilling methods, and carelessness in a rush to win the race. Those darn Russians. I really, really hope I'm wrong. I guess we'll see within the week; the temperatures are dropping daily. Or maybe the americans don't want the russians to find out whats in that lake first. All these stories making the russians look bad and highliting the risks might be just to apply pressure on the russians to stop for the year. Maybe the americans have a plan to go in there and finish the job once the ruskies pull out for the season. Remember they did just bring a complete drilling operation down there and left it stashed in containers for a project next year......who knows. |

As for the Branson/Gore trip, I think, since they left from Argentina, they are touring the coast of the west side of Antarctic. The Vostok station is located far inland, at an extremely high altitude, in east Antartica. It is supposed to be the coldest spot in the world. You never know, though, if we are getting the truth. I've been wondering about the photos of the Russian station. Are they up-to-date or were they shot in the 60's or 70's, or at another location altogether, perhaps in Siberia? Regarding the other comment about the Americans persuading the Russians to abandon the effort this year so they can secretly reach the waters first - that's plausible. With a number of mysterious deaths/disappearances at Antarctic research stations over the years, we know something is not right.. |

A friend noted that it makes it seem like the be-all-end-all (end-all-be-all? who knows.) of Antarctic exploration. Well with three massive collaborations all trying to drill a subglacial lake (the three being WISSARD at Whillans, the Russians at Vostok, and the UK at Ellsworth), it kinda is. Not to pat ourselves on the back, but to me at least, it has a bit of “space race” feel to it. And a side note: I don’t agree with the characterization of Vostok as the “crown jewel” of Antarctic science. Where’s the Whillans love, guys??" [link to scrippsonice.wordpress.com] |

It will soon (day or two) be too cold for a transport to land so they can't keep fudging about the state of the operation and the personnel involved. How can anyone explain the clear dome on top of this object? your welcome, and yes the same questions are nagging at me..even tho its 10sec"steps"it morphs way to quick to be an iceberg turning whilst floating/moving, the dome is another oddity...as well as another poster mentioned the fact it does not appear to be touching the ice in the last few "steps" and casts a shadow too.I agree the orignal vid posted is best to watch. I just read an infosheet on the Deepflight Challenger submersible that was posted on today's Steve Fossett thread. The machine looks awfully similar to the one in the video: [link to deepflight.com] Wikipedia says the submersible's inaugural dive was delayed from mid 2011 to early 2012. |

It is early morning at Halley on the Weddell Sea (general location of boys in the boat) and late morning at Vostok station. Gore's group is leaving today. One report stated February 6 is also the last day for the Russian crew to leave. When I was viewing the Antarctic time zone map ( [link to www.worldtimezone.com] I noticed how close the USA McMurdo station is to Vostok. McMurdo is the Antarctic station closest to Christchurch, NZ. On another thread, a poster left a link that indicated all flights within Antarctica used the McMurdo base. If a transport goes to Vostok today, it will leave and return to the American base. With this in mind, I think it would be difficult for countries to keep secrets from each other. Hopefully, accurate news will be revealed soon. |

It shows a supply plane delivering food and equipment to Vostok station in 1967. The underside of the plane is prominent in the photo and it is painted with a huge, red pentagram. Anybody know what airline that might be? I checked Aeroflot and it doesn't use that symbol. The old photo seems out of place in the story. Here you go [link to www.airliners.net] [link to www.airliners.net] Thank you! It seems to be the plane, though they don't show an angle that shows the star. I thought it might mean something, but I guess not. [link to en.wikipedia.org] [link to en.wikipedia.org] |
