Astronomers discover 'emerald-cut' galaxy

An international team of astronomers has discovered a rare square galaxy with a striking resemblance to an emerald cut diamond.

The astronomers - from Australia, Germany, Switzerland and Finland - discovered the rectangular shaped galaxy within a group of 250 galaxies some 70 million light years away.

"In the Universe around us, most galaxies exist in one of three forms: spheroidal, disc-like, or lumpy and irregular in appearance," said Associate Professor Alister Graham from Swinburne University of Technology

He said the rare rectangular-shaped galaxy was a very unusual object. "It's one of those things that just makes you smile because it shouldn't exist, or rather you don't expect it to exist.

"It's a little like the precarious Leaning Tower of Pisa or the discovery of some exotic new species which at first glance appears to defy the laws of nature."

Luxury $4m boat explodes in flames at Docklands

A LUXURY cruiser that sank after an inferno on a Docklands marina had been delivered to its new owners just yesterday.

The Herald Sun has been told the $4 million 2010 model Horizon Skylounge arrived from a Queensland boat dealership.

Witness Liz Hatty said she saw men hosing down the boat before it erupted into flames and drove them to retreat.

The inferno took hours to extinguish as firefighters struggled to apply fire-retardant foam.

"If there's a fire in a boat that boat has got to burn through before you can attack it.

MFB assistant chief fire officer Adam Dalrymple said firefighters had to attack the blaze from land, which brought additional challenges.

"The issue is we had to utilise hydrants in the street to supply water to the trucks to apply foam," he said.

"We needed volumes of water to apply the foam."

The effort was further hampered when a tugboat called in to help control the blaze was forced to turn back after it was temporarily grounded in the shallow water.

A boating industry source told the Herald Sun firefighters were forced to tackle the blaze for long periods using nothing but water from the bay.

"The firefighters keep running out of foam and they keep trying to use water and it's having no effect," he said.

"You need to be able to get foam from a truck on land out to the marina, and no marina is equipped with chemical foam used to put out fibreglass and fuel fires."

was very surprised to see a ufo video presented as evidence on mainstream tv this morning. they were serious and did not make silly jokes

some guy in a small town in queensland got footage and they interviewed him at his house this morning on the sunrise morning show

ufo vids are a dime a dozen but this was the 1st time i've seen one presented as real evidence in mainstream tv here in vic/aus

Bad bush tucker man’ Malcolm Naden captured after seven years

After almost seven years on the run in the rugged Australian outback, the country’s most wanted fugitive, Malcolm Naden, known as the “bad bush tucker man”, has been captured and charged with murder.

The 38-year-old outlaw, whose ability to evade a massive police manhunt and live off his bushcraft skills earned him an almost mythic status in Australia, was captured in a midnight police raid in northern New South Wales. The Government claimed the bounty over his head – A$250,000 (£163,000) – was the largest since the days of Ned Kelly in the 19th century.

Naden, 38, a former abattoir worker, appeared briefly in court with no shoes, a shaved head and a thick bushy beard to face charges over the murder of a 24-year-old, Kristy Scholes, who was found strangled in his locked bedroom in Dubbo in 2005. He also faced two counts of sexual assault against a 15-year-old-girl and the shooting of a police officer who closed in on one of his makeshifts camp last December. He did not apply for bail.

But his years on the run were a constant embarrassment for the state’s police and prompted constant reminders that he is “no Robin Hood”.

Naden, known as a quiet recluse, was a martial arts expert and avid reader of the Bible, crime books and survival manuals.

Today i saw very strange thing. When i went to work i saw "Plane" leaving very clear 2 lines trail but in front of it was very dark line (like shadow almost black), like trajectory where it will fly. Buildings blocked view, few seconds later plane gone. And all trail was gone. Only some smoke left like from plane was explode and droped, i dont know how to clearly explain in english what i saw... But its not posible all trail gone in few seconds it was through all sky!
