Police say shooting of chained dog justified, owner then given leash-law violation citation

There are definitely cases where police would need to shoot a dog, but this one is pretty bad considering the dog was CHAINED! and there was a kid so close by. Wow.

Piece of shit cops, just shows how arrogant these assholes are. They are just mad because they got some bad publicity, so now they are going to punish the victim. And leash laws are stupid, as long as the leash is long enough and the dog has food, water, and shelter there is no problem.

Funny, they care so much about the welfare of the dog that they will needlessly kill it, then try to claim that the owners abused it, all because they care so much about animal welfare, of course.

Where's the Yosemite Sam dude to defend these pigs? He always says "if you don't want your dogs shot, keep them on a rope." As we see here, they will still get shot anyway ... or if they are put away in a kennel/cage, or if they are put away inside the house ... etc etc .

I'm fucking sick of these stories! Cops shooting dogs on leashes, in crates, in front of families and on and on and on. It wasn't always like this.

Many moons ago when my grandmother died, the police came to our house for questioning as part of their normal procedure. They had their own baseball cards with their pictures and passed them around to all the kids. I never forgot how kind they were while my family was grieving. Nowadays, the kids would be tazed while they execute the family dog. Insanity.

I remember those days, back in the late 1970s/early 1980s cops here were passing out cards like that, if you were a kid you could just walk up to them and ask for one. Nowadays you can't even approach them at all , even if you are a kid (and you might not want to either, since so many of today's cops are child molesters!).

Cops used to be part of the community and someone kids could look up to, now they are just thugs to be feared and avoided, as in any other Third World country.

Tottaly unprofessiional behavior by that PD. Shows them to cowards by shooting a dog on a LEASH! The dog was not stopping them from doing their job and they did not give the owner a chance to move the dog. COWARDS

There are very few instances where police should shoot a dog. That's why there are dog catchers. Get on the radio and call the dog catcher to come take care of the animal, without shooting it.

The police have become trigger happy since 9/11.

They shot my dog a while back. He was a beautiful black lab and well trained, but he had gotten out while i was in the shower.

Just remember this:

A cop carries a gun to protect himself, NOT YOU! They used to care about you. Now they care about their paycheck and fines and murdering your dog or child.

I don't enjoy seeing cops getting killed but when they do, I just think, "Well, what did you expect?"

Recently they broke into a house (busted down a front door) while an Afghan war vet was asleep. It surprised him. He came up out of bed with an AR-15 and shot 3 guys up before they managed to wound him. One guy died, one was in critical condition and one minor flesh wound.

The bad thing about thugs in blue is that they tend to do breaking and entering during the day. They need to change their cocky "I'm a cop and I'm always right." attitude back into one of serving the public. Its getting a lot of them killed.

Criminals are criminals. A badge on your chest and a piece of paper from a judge doesn't mean you're any more right than the guy holding the shotgun to your head. I just means the guy holding the shotgun might live longer if you act like a jackboot.

I went out for a walk earlier and got startled by a German Shepard on a chain in somebody's front yard. I was carrying a concealed pistol and pepper spray; I was startled for an instant and started to go for the spray, then saw that the dog was chained up, and laughed it off. If I had been a cop I could have just blown it away, then charged the owners for animal cruelty for having it on a chain! Going for the pistol as a first resort didn't even occur to me, I would have just kicked the thing off me if the spray didn't work.

I saw another thing yesterday that made me think of this case, a woman across the street got a delivery from USPS and her dog got out. The postal guy didn't even seem afraid, even though it was a Chow, and she called it back and every thing was cool. A cop probably would have blown it away, or at the very least went for his pistol. Amazing how delivery people and other workers can deal with dogs everyday and not resort to shooting them, but the cops will just do it on a whim.

Back in the early 1970's my black roommate and I were driving to college in Towson Maryland. I was stopped by the local police and quickly surrounded by three police cars. Two of the officers casually walked up to my car and calmly asked us for our licenses. Not one gun was drawn. After asking a few questions, he then apologized for the inconvenience then added that the local bank had just been robbed by a salt and pepper team. These days I would expect nothing less than several AR 15's just waiting for me to make a sudden move.

I know - it's amazing. I would never call the cops for anything - even in an emergency!

You know...what I just don't get is why these fucking cops are like this now?

Yes, they've always been douchebags with inferiority complexes...but am I the only one who remembers when this wouldn't just get acted out in parking and speeding tickets and whatnot?

What has made these fuckheads so brutal, sadistic, and violent? I'm assuming the cop didn't have to rush in to rescue a hostage or any real crazy sort of time-sensitive emergency...right?

As in any trained profession, there are good and bad.

I've had run-ins with bad cops, and I've also had generous and compassionate help from good ones.

We have to be careful not to tar them all with the same brush. Best is to be in a situation where we don't have to deal with them at all, but I still like to think that if I ever need them, I can count on them being there, and being fair.

I find, with a lot of these dog stories (not all, mind you, but a lot) the dogs were already pegged as nuisance animals by neighbours and the owners had already been given warnings. Or the householder was under surveillance for drugs or other shady dealings. I know I sound straight here (and I am, so that's why I sound it), but, as I said, in a lot of these circumstances where the dogs get shot, there are issues surrounding it, or a history between the dogs' owners and the cops. It doesn't just happen out of the blue (or rarely happens out of the blue).

I think we need to keep a balanced perspective and not just automatically assume that the cops are at fault when something like this happens. I love all animals, and I hate to see them hurt or killed because of something the owner or someone else did, but we need cops to keep order, and we need to keep a certain level of respect towards them as well.

My mother worked for the RCMP (as a civilian, not a cop) for almost 40 years, so I grew up in a household where respecting police was a given. But I think, even without that background, and even with the few negative experiences I have had with cops, I'd still respect the badge-bearer, because I still do believe that they have the public's best interest at heart (that is, the GOOD cops do).

No shit. I'll take my chances with the thieves, murderers, gang members, arsonists, and drug dealers.

You do know that you are also under surveillance right now, correct? Every single person on the planet with a telephone and computer is under surveillance.

No doubt. Nothing infuriates me more than when people excuse this shit just because something was "against the law". Once upon a time, (and not too long ago) it was against the law to not report your neighbor to the Gestapo for being a jewish.

But that certainly didn't make it "right"...did it? Good thing most of the WWII generation has passed away by now. They would be ashamed, embarrassed, and disgraced to see what their fucking offspring has allowed this country to become.
