Re: Government on my doorstep: "Google Earth shows a building in your backyard. Explain."
A person from local authorities showed at my door to ask about a building in my yard, seen on Google Earth.
He openly stated that to my wife, who answered the door.
After my wife reassured him it was a old animal shed, he was let inside the house to see for himself.
After that, he left, reassuring my wife everything was fine.

Odd, to say the least.

The images from my house on Google Earth are at least seven years old.

So they're not that quick, but still I think it's ridiculous they're using sources like that to determine if someone has build something in their own backyard.

wtf

The planning department in our area doesn't show up unless someone has complained.. they have to have a complaint before they will confront anyone. That could be changing elsewhere, but that's the way it has been in this area so far.

'He wasn't attacking my wife, otherwise she would have done that.

And as I said, I wasn't at home at the time. I regret that.
'

Understandable, things happen that we don't expect sometimes.

Can you introduce your wife to some procedures that protect your privacy better in case it, or anything like "it" happens again sometime?

Telling me the story, she added she felt like a fool for not asking any further. But she chose to be more alert to her children than that guy.

It's what it is, I can't change that. But she intend to be more vigilant in the future.

Well, maybe your local planning dept. has run out of work to do, so they are trying to justify their existence.

And maybe someone doesn't like you and wanted to make trouble for you. I grew up out in the country, and sometimes we were surprised at some of the "rural folks" who definitely could have been complained about. My dad was the first person people would come to for help in all situations, but there was still a sleazy, creepy neighbor who tried to get him in trouble for something the neighbor had concocted in his own mind.... and a neighbor who wouldn't help anybody in any circumstance (and there were plenty of complaints that could have been made against him.) Enemies lurk sometimes where you think they are just inane people....especially those kind, in fact.

And of course, you can be right in your feelings that government is being intrusive....we are living in scary times.

Yea it is.

Funny thing is, when I read a thread like that, there's always the doubt of authenticity. Now it's mine, and for me there's no doubt.
Makes at least a couple of other threads more reliable.

just trying to explore all possibilities here... not arguing with you.
It could be that he made that up before coming to cover for the fact that maybe he received a complaint from a neighbor low-life ("neighbor complaint" is based on above stated experience with evil neighbor complaint against my beloved dad.) Some people always enter a potentially confrontationsl situation with an excuse...made up beforehand. Just a possibility.....and as I stated, you could be right: the planning dept. may be looking for trouble by sitting at their desk all day checking google, trying to make themselves viable or important....maybe they have to justify their existence with something besides just sitting at their desks...I dunno....with government job, not likely! but then, governments are cutting back.....anyway, I sure wouldn't want them coming into my house or on my property....I hugely resented the census guy coming aruond GPSing my home...still makes me irked...they certainly have us all mapped and identified in every way.

Why would he have to go into your house to look at a shed in the backyard? Was there no other way to get to your backyard except through your house?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9206481

Yes there is a way around, but my wife couldn't let the kids alone in the house.
My wife kinda offered it to him.

Besides that, it was terrible weather so he really didn't want to get outside in the yard. Now he could view it from the scullery.
 Quoting: Searchalot

Your wife is too trusting. Better talk to her about putting the kids in danger like that. At my house, NOBODY gets in without proper ID and only if I called THEM. I don't care if it's the Pope and it's snowing outside. People DO dress up as officers of the law, gas company, cable, etc. Unifroms go missing all the time. You can even buy fake badges down at the surplus store in my neighborhood, which is why I would call the police dept to verify whether they'd evn sent anyone over.

We had some friends let two young ladies in "to use the phone". They got beaten so bad there was permanent brain damage. Robbed too.

Plus, please tell your wife EVERYONE can see google earth. Jesus, I wouldn't even let her operate a motor vehicle after that.

Yes wives can be too nice and accommodating. Really though this is exactly how people find themselves in a jackpot with a home invasion or a future break and enter. Dogs are good, but now he knows you have a dog......... nothing a shot of mace in the face won't cure, no shooting necessary.

It probably was a nerd from some lands branch of government concerned about building permits and taxes, but next time it could be a different story. Hopefully you have read the riot act to your wife and told her to quit being so naive and nice to strangers.

I found it rather odd to say the least but I'm guessing this is about tax revenue and that your property values were being assessed.

The city I live in uses a private service to photograph the city every two years.
The last time I went to get a building permit they pulled up a current aerial view of the house.
The were able to see that I had two sheds when I was only supposed to have one.
