The only thing I can associate with is the fact that this year our climate is in a La Nina system.
The weather this year has been altered due to this natural occurrence and could be affecting their behaviour.

Lived here all my life, this has been a normal event. The birds used to roost at other places but have been coming to the mall for about the last 10. As a matter of fact there are cannon's on the roof of the mall to scare the birds away.

Do they fire live ammo?

I'm in Colorado, too, SW Denver Metro. After dropping off a relative at DIA last weekend, we noticed thousands of blackbirds, along with geese, heading due North as we were driving south on E-470. I only noticed it because the birds were flying in one direction and suddenly turned and went the opposite way. They looked confused and a few stragglers would go the wrong way and then turn back around to join the others. All the way to almost Lone Tree we saw this. Wouldn't be too surprised, we have buds coming out on our trees and everything now :)

Indiana here. About 5 days ago I noticed every tree in my neighborhood, filled with hundreds of blackbirds in each tree.
Thought it was odd, because I have never seen more then a few at a time in my subdivision. There were thousands...for sure.

My first thought was the movie, 'The Birds"

seen this same thing in Oregon last month tens of thousands flying east at really high altitude, actually blacked out the sun a little, freaked me out too.... ran in the house and looked up tsunami warning site earth quake ect...I live on the coast and something had to be scaring those birds.

They gather in large groups like this every year...and this is why the farmers poison them and why they die off in large numbers. Not saying all the die offs happen this way....but many do.

I've been noticing a lot of birds that don't show up til spring like robins and finches,I think they think it's spring.

They are just trying to gather discarded food from the food court before the snow and ice comes... nothing more.
