Freckles User ID: 689471 Puerto Rico 01/24/2012 07:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | At a height of 3-5 RE (RE =6378 km) almost all atmospheric particles are fully ionized. At this height, the motion of charged energetic particles may be approximated by the superposition of three types of motion: gyration about the main field, bounce along field lines and azimuthal drift in rings around the Earth. The drift of charged particles in the Earth's inner magnetic field produces the so-called ring-current. This current fills a doughnut-shaped volume around the equator and produces a magnetic field at the Earth's surface which reduces the strength of the surface field. In quiet conditions, the effect of ring current on the magnetic field is negligible but during magnetic storms the intensity of the ring current increases and produces significant disturbances. The conductivity in the ionosphere is proportional to electron density which means that particle precipitation in the ionosphere leads to high conductivity. The plasma convection in the presence of Earth's magnetic field causes an electric field. Both the enhanced conductivity and the electric field cause large currents at altitudes between 90 and 150 km. Some of the consequences of these currents are joule heating of the ionospheric plasma and changes of the geomagnetic field on the ground. These changes of the geomagnetic field create the geomagnetically induced currents in the Earth and in conductors. The three phases of a magnetic storm are An increase of magnetic field lasting a few hours A large magnetic depression over an interval of several hours A slow recovery over the following few days The initial phase is caused by the compression of the magnetosphere on the arrival of a burst of solar plasma. The main phase is due to a large increase in the ring current energy. The decay of this current will restore the magnetic field in its initial condition. LINK: [link to large.stanford.edu] |

I do not have MSNBC on my TV. I am going by the leading provider of the bested news anywhere so they say, and these games usually are played thru CNN first. Plus the marked down data on ACE that matches CNNS story. There is a fox news post in this thread that also says the CME went north of us and that the auroras were just normal shit. I just went trough my previous thread, you were on there too ( Thread: Fasten your seat belts, the radiation is on its way. 1 hr to go. (Page 18) and just before I went to bed the data from the current CME activity was missing. There was one very nice person who took the time to explain to us, less knowledgeable, what is going on. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9120484 I think mostly, however, this is about downplaying events to water down any trends we think we see developing in nature, lest we catch on to the big picture and begin to think for ourselves, outside of the box. think youre right well put! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 8518866 United States 01/24/2012 08:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's a solid source NIP. If you look now, we did get a KP6 storm this afternoon. If you will look at the second graph, the Electrons, you'll see the data dropout, it flatlines. This occurs because the data stream can be corrupted by the storm. This actually shows the total duration of the storm, over two days worth. What made this flare so unique, was it was a "TenFlare" [link to solarham.com] It may not have been an X, but what it put out was nasty bad, very much on the scale of a high X. Yes, Carrington bad. I'm quite relieved at this point to think it missed us, at least heavy brunt of it. Now, lets see if I get banned for the eighth time for this post. Good catch by the way, kudos.
