Thousands march in Poland over Acta internet treaty

Thousands of protesters have taken to Poland's streets over the signing of an international treaty activists say amounts to internet censorship.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government signed the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement in Tokyo on Thursday.

The treaty, known as Acta, aims to establish international standards to enforce intellectual property rights.

But critics say it could curb freedom of expression, and government websites have been hacked in protest.

Move over SOPA, tell ACTA the news? Or is this more of a case of “move over SOPA, it’s ACTA time?” Or does, “Stop! ACTA time!” work? For me, it’s “just when you thought it was safe to go back on the web, ACTA happens.” That’s right folks, while SOPA/PIPA were being placed in the ditch as smoldering husks, President Obama signed the ACTA “treaty,” which is, at its most elementary, a multinational agreement that addresses intellectual property enforcement.

There are many issues involved with President Obama’s signing of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement — which occurred in September 2011 — and whether or not it should be treated as an executive agreement or an actual treaty between the agreeing countries.

Canada and the US are both among the authors and founding signatories for the ACTA treaty which was written and signed quietly by our representatives last november. All signatory countries now have about a year to change their laws to "come into compliance" with the treaty..

The implied threat is if you don't pass national SOPA / C-11 style laws, you will be denied legal access to all copyrighted media, as a nation. This is a bluff they did not expect the US citizen to call because denying the US would be denying their largest market....

I say that every single one of us should get online tonight and download as many torrents as we can for hours on end.

The more people & the more torrents should tell these shitheads that we do not appreciate what they are doing and we are going to fight it.

I only read about them signing it (officially or not) just now! As Mr. Martin said, there was absolutely NO coverage on the Belgian news.
