Almost half of the children died before the age of 5. 600 years ago, nobody in Europe had sewer systems at home! People threw their feces in the streets! 600 years ago, the depostic aristocrats commited all sort of crimes against the serfs, like raping the daughters of the serfs, and nobody could do anything... 600 years ago, there was no freedom of religion in Europe, and people were jailed for being "heretic". 600 years ago, the Church in Europe used to burn women alive, accusing them of being "witches"!! Back to the question, yes life was horrible, a meager existance. Dwellings were horrendice, in cold weather you just did not bathe or change clothes, lice and vermin were rampant. Of coarse no running hot water and modern immenities, such as commodes. A common rash would get infected since no blue star ointment. We live in a spoiled society today with microwaves and other instant gratification. What would you go without freezers/fridge, electric stoves, thermostat controled heat, cell phones? And we still complain more than ever! |
