Email systems other than Gmail? Time to move away from the Google.
With Google's increasing intrusions into our privacy, and ramp up of its tracking of users, I think it's time to research and discuss replacements.

Google search: If people want a good, private search engine, I would recommend using Start page...www.startpage.com.

Start page submits your questions to Google via their own servors and gets the answer back to you, so YOU stay anonymous and untracked. But it's the same as using Google - just without the tracking. No loss of efficiency.

Email: this is where I get stuck. I use Gmail a lot. Are there any good replacements for Gmail? Hotmail seems the same, just for Microsoft. How about free, or cheap email providers that are private and reliable. Any suggestions?

Thank you for the kind words. We really DO need to find alternatives, and you're right....in our alleged "free market" system (which it isn't), we should have more choices than we do. But I think that's the ultimate goal...to have maybe 2-3 big companies to give us the illusion of choice, while they rig everything between them. Like the Democrats and Republicans.

I think Startpage works very well - no problems - and one of its founders, Katherine Albrecht, is a big advocate of personal liberty and freedom.

Hopefully we can find some other choices, especially with email. I think it's creepy to open up my Gmail and see ads that obviously reference things I have referred to IN my emails. for example, if I mention Miami casually in an email, I might see ads about traveling there. Stuff like that that shows the obvious tracking of our emails.

Not all of us are savvy enough to do that though. Do you have any companies that issue domain names that you would recommend? I'm afraid I know little about this process, maybe you could give us some info on who you'd recommend and how to go about it. Thank you!

It's really creepy. I don't have anything to hide, of course, but who wants some stranger sending you ads or links for things you're discussing, usually with friends or relatives, in your emails???? No one likes the sense of being watched or followed.

That's true, but it's a big Internet company, and I'd like to keep my email separate from these big companies. Something portable in case I change Internet providers at some point - which I've done in the past.

All the free email services seem to be totally owned.

I have registered my own domain/email and am no longer using Gmail or any other public email service...

I am also no longer using Google... I have switched to ixquick.

[link to ixquick.com]

The only Google related service I am still using is YouTube... I have made a new account for my YouTube participation which is not linked to any email address or anything that I've ever used before.

Eventually I will cease YouTube as well.

lol, it doesn't matter who your email is through, it's not going to be secure, if someone wants to know what you have in your email they can find out,

if someones all butt hurt over google's privacy issues, then feel free to move to another service, but in the end anything that is accessible via the interweb isn't secure.

So as long as your not emailing your credit card info and SSN ect, who cares, just don't threaten any government officials or places, other than that no one cares about the porn that your emailing.

That is somewhat true. Obviously if the government wanted to know what I was writing, they could find out easily enough. I don't want to make things CASUALLY easy though, so my data can be collected just as a matter of course. We need to make things as complicated for them as we can, both to maintain our freedom and privacy, and to throw wrenches into their wheels. We can't just give up and say, no matter what we do it's no good. That's just an excuse for doing nothing.

I hate the casual data collection, and those ads/links they put on my webmail that shows they are just picking up on things in my emails just creeps me out. I would at least like the illusion of privacy, if nothing else.

You want to use a smaller company. The email services are all global, but smaller Canadian companies aren't under the same requirements to retain data as US companies.

It may cost you a little to get half a dozen email accounts under some minimum hosting plan, but you get way more security and way better service.

I would personally stay away from HUSH and any service that has millions of users claiming security, but has already turned over for the feds.

(sure they only do this for things that are illegal, but homo sex is illegal in Iran - death penalty, so where is that line?)

This is not even remotely true. With mail services using SSL from client to server, then TLS from server to server, it is possible to have secure email. From the average persons side the process is transparent. (one or two additional checkboxes)

All encryption forms that are used are 'approved' by the government, if they want to see what you have to say, they will see what you have to say, period.

your data is only as safe as the amount of effort/money someone has to invest.

so in saying that various places/systems are more secure, yes, that is true, i use SSL and TLS on my email, but i will not email info that i do not want someone getting,
just because i have a 'secure' connection, does not mean that the person on the other end has the same.

bottom line, if you want to move off of a service because you want to make a point, then have at it and i will stand behind you. However, if you want to move off because you don't want someone seeing what you are emailing, i don't believe that you will be more secure or less secure going to any one particular mail hosting company.

however the difference is allowing tptb

You have to be smart about the world and in doing so you can live freely and oh by the way if you wanna make up your own way of talking this is a great solution cause its impossible to decrypt unless I show how cause I made it.

Actually, again, this isn't entirely true. All North American encryption schema are approved by the government and contain a back door. However, encryption schema like IDEA out of Finland does not.

This has been a sticking point in US/Finland relations for a long time. All technical measures aside, most information can be accessed if enough money is thrown at it.

Hacking or decrypting emails isn't the same as someone allowing free access for any purpose in perpetuity by a HUGE corporation to all of their most personal correspondence based on a service agreement. Allowing google to retain this information FOREVER also isn't a good thing.

Trusting Google is a mistake. Using a free email service with any kind of expectation of privacy IS a mistake.
As a Canadian, I am exempt from the inane laws of retention that US service providers are under, and it takes a court order in Canada to attempt to get access to email we aren't required to retain.

There is a purpose to stomping out the little guy with these free services. The purpose has nothing to do with improving service for you.
