Sweltering U.S. heat wave claims 30 lives

July 7, 2012 – WASHINGTON – Americans dipped into the water, went to the movies and rode the subway just to be in air conditioning Saturday for relief from unrelenting heat that has killed 30 people across half the country. The heat sent temperatures soaring over 100 degrees in several cities, including a record 105 in Washington, St. Louis (106) and Indianapolis (104); buckled highways; and derailed a Washington-area train even as another round of summer storms threatened. If people ventured outside to do anything, they did it early. But even then, the heat was stifling. “It was baking on the 18th green,” said golfer Zeb Rogerson, who teed off at 6 a.m. at an Alexandria, Va., golf course but was sweltering by the end of his round. The heat sent temperatures soaring in more than 20 states to 105 in Louisville, Ky., 101 in Philadelphia, and 95 in New York; besides in Washington, a record of 104 was set in Sioux Falls, S.D., At least 30 deaths were blamed on the heat, including nine in Maryland and 10 in Chicago, mostly among the elderly.

The US heatwave has been counter-balanced by a cold-wave over Mexico and central America.

Here in the Toluca region (high-altitude central region), there has been easily 30-50% more rain than usual. It has generally stayed chilly every day until about noon for a few hours and then it clouds up quick and goes back to storm activity. The snow pack on the local mountains has been building steadily for several weeks now.

We're finally up to slightly above average temps here in vancouver and its been sunny for days now, and it expected to be sunny for the foreseeable future. Not too hot though, average or slightly above.

My observations in Tn. near the Ky. line:

99F in the shade as I type.

110F in the shade on June 29th. Mercury thermometer. Hottest day I've ever experienced in 37 years of living in Tn. Four or five days in a row over 104F in the shade. Very low humidity. 26% the day it was 110F. Very unusual for Tn. The humidity here can be compared to New Orleans during much of our normal summers. Never heard the grass crunch underfoot here before.

Have noticed various undergrowth in my mostly oak/hickory woods with localized shriveling of leaves while other leaves on the bush are normal.. as if someone used a blowtorch on a small part of the plant. I suspect beams of light through the canopy at certain times of day causing that type of independent damage.

Tulip poplars are dropping dead leaves like it's fall.
Garden is fried. Getting tomatoes but about half have sun blisters. Never had those before.
Corn is spindly and small stalked with little production even with watering.
Pulled an onion the other day that was almost too hot to hold.
Squash did well but is now faltering. Peppers ok. They like it.
Beans dried up. Melons slow. Pumpkins dried up.
etc.

Creeks are dry. Ponds and wells are getting low. Reservoirs low. Hay slow. Cows stay in shade during daytime.

Very little rain and very, very hot.
Very little to zero bird activity from daylight until sunset and afterwards. Hummingbirds not coming to feeders.
Most wildlife inactive. Have seen deer moving mid-afternoon. Not that unusual in fall but is during summer.
Lot of snake activity.
Squirrels getting in the corn.
Fishing sucks.


All in all, not that great around here.. dog days way too early.

I wasn't sure if it was exhaustion or the heat or solar radiation of whatever sort yesterday, but I felt like I was going to pass out in the late afternoon.
Might have been going in and out of the heat. Was washing some filthy old quart jars outside, bringing in 6 or 8 at a time, every 5 minutes. Had to quit for awhile.

Garden is better today. Put out soaker hoses in the morning. Got some unexpected rain in the afternoon.
About 30 minutes worth. Not quite a soaker but good. 40-50 mph nocked down much of my corn.
Spent an hour yesterday, an hour this morning and pushed them back up and packed mud/dirt back around them. They look much better this afternoon.
Mostly recovered from the frying sun and dryness that almost killed them in last few days.
Humming birds have been real active out my window. Had the GF refill the humming bird feeder this morning. As many as 4 fighting over control of it.

Might go for a "patrol" of the woods and look around.
Temp outside is almost comfortable for a change, nice change. Thank you Lord.

Extra cold up here in QLD, but look at the x-ray and radiation levels from the sun. When the sun isn't covered by cloud go stand out in the direct light and see how quickly your skin feels it is burning. Actually pay attention to your surroundings and you should quickly see the differences about that you would normally over-look.

Aussie AC: Are you aware Westpac & NAB both took bailouts during the GFC, I'm guessing you don't.

For your own sake, please look a little deeper into what IS happening around you.

Actually, I have been drinking in the suns energy whenever it is available. Beautifully warming is how I would describe it, not burning as you say. So are you saying I should look a little deeper for my sake or for the sake of this threads credibility? How can the Sun pick and choose which parts are hot and which parts are not?

I live in the south east part of Australia and it has never looked better than it does now, due to the rain we have had over the past 2 years. We are about to go back into an El Nino so of course this will change again, but that's the cycle.

I do suscribe to the theory that the Sun is heating the earth much more than man, but I presently see no evidence to anywhere near the degree that AA has been rabbiting on about.

I don't care about the credibility of this thread. I don't care for AA wasting pages and pages arguing with people who are here for no other purposes but to distract and cause annoyance.

I personally dislike arrogant people and AA is hugely arrogant, he admits it himself, but I don't let that detract from what he has to say and I take info from any and all sources and don't blindly follow anyone. I make up my own mind. I see and experience changes and I relate them on this thread. I agree that things haven't reached the direness of what AA has been stating but I can see things heading in that direction.

I'm not into fear-mongering and despite the convictions of one angry little man I am not for Agenda 21, personally I hate anything that starts with the letters U.N. I am a wife and mother and can't rely on anyone but myself to protect my family from any and all threats.

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Like any situation be aware of what is happening around you and act accordingly.

What I add to this thread is only my opinion and I appreciate the opinions of others.

If you feel that I was disrespectful then I apologise for that.
