There have certainly been data gaps lately, however and in my mind, unfortunately there is a lack of knowledge in interpreting the data which leads to misconceptions. Also there is very little comparable data relative to the earth's existence and our technology. We know next to nothing about how our solar system works let alone our universe. We take a theory, if it fits the *model*, it's accepted. Take atoms for example; the electrons should spiral down into the nucleus but don't. The sub atomic world works nothing like our gravitational world so why should anything else?
