I rock back and forth for hours in a meditative state while listening to music since i was a toddler....anyone else do this?
Method: I am on my knees and rock side to side with my head in a pillow. Puts me into a highly visual meditative state and i creatively visualize and daydream. Sessions can last over an hour. Have had some of my best ideas and worked through problems doing this.

I have never met a soul who does this. My parents allowed me my privacy to do this while growing up and it was never discussed. Am I alone in this behavior?

I once shared the fact that I did this with a friend and they thought it was strange.

Nice....a one star and run....no comment?

I actually share something bery personal and hear crickets. The gifted class thread inspired me to post this because I was in the prpgram in my area and I think this behavior is unusual but doubt its unique.

Wow....maybe it is unique. This is one place I thought I might find others who do or have done this. I am serious btw....it is a type of meditation or self hypnosis and it is very beneficial to my state of mind. I am dissappointed nobody else can relate.

Yes. I did it. Listen to music loud and rock back and fourth sitting indian style. Parents thought i was kind of nuts, but I could day dream and almost live a different life for a short while. I a am ADD, ADHD and still have a restless leg when sleeping.

Thanks for the reply. I was hyper as a child but am not now. I have no restless leg issues but most people would think I was crazy if they saw what I do. I too can enter another world as you say. I think its a good thing and can be very productive from a stress relief and change in perspective standpoint.

Thanks again.

The head in the pillow part is a bit strange. But hey whom am I to judge?

Rocking or shockeling is quite common for those of us who pray.

I heard someone say once that it is our spirit following the flame of God that is within us.

When I enter a deep meditative state I am always amazed when the swaying/rocking starts. It is as if somone else is in control.

I have searched for studies and documentation of this behavior bit what little i have found has been related to dysfunctional conditions like autism. I have no other behavioral characteristics that would be consistent with mental disorder of any kind.

Another thing I would do while "rocking", is listen to the same song over and over while singing to it. Sometimes certain parts in songs would really stick out and kind of heighten the experience.

Yeah, me too, and music has always had a meditative effect on me also. My mom played a huge pipe organ in a church every Sunday when she was pregnant with me, so I've had an intimate relationship with music since before I was born. I've sung since before I could talk, and I've never met an instrument I couldn't play. I was classically trained for 12 years, but rock 'n' roll is my preferred genre.

Perhaps not surprisingly, I am a retired professional musician who has performed across the nation and released several CDs of original music that sold internationally in the past several decades.

Music can touch a person in places nothing else can reach.

Rock on!

Thanks for the reply. The technique is strange, however, it was adopted from a bery early age. I have tried the indian style but it has not been as effective....cant go as deep.

I would definitely describe what I am doing as praying in a lot of ways and I do feel connected on a spiritual level during many sessions. It is like opening up to receive a frequency like a radio sometimes.

I appreciate your response.

I have known few people who do this. Maybe it's your own special way of visualization and meditation.

Re: I rock back and forth for hours in a meditative state while listening to music since i was a toddler....anyone else do this?
When I was about 10 or so I had a friend that lived nearby and I would sleep over often. She shared a room with her sister who was probably 6 or 7 at the time.

She rocked constantly at night., on her knees folded downward, kind of like the child yoga position. She would rock head first vertically, not side to side.

She seemed completely normal otherwise. Hope this helps.

I suspect its fairly common but people don't talk about these things.

Appreciate it Nobody. People who havent either done it or been exposed to it must have a hard time understanding...case in point "mental patients" response from other post. I am happy to see yours and others responses. It is a very cerebral practice and shallow minded individuals like that poster dont have the framework to make sense of something like this.

Re: I rock back and forth for hours in a meditative state while listening to music since i was a toddler....anyone else do this?
I do it too. It started when I was a toddler as well. My younger sister was born when I was 14 months old, so I'd sit on the couch & gently bounce my back off the back cushions and sing to myself. My 'bouncing' was to the beat of my made up songs & I can still remember 2 of them today. My mom, being concerned, talked to a child psychologist about my bouncing & he told her I probably had separation anxiety with my new sister being born so quickly after me & I was self-soothing.

An interesting side note though-both parents were professional musicians and I have my master's in music performance, although I chose a different career path & seldom play anymore. But when I am alone and stressed I still tend to rock back & forth in my seat & hum while I'm thinking.

are but blossoms dying.
Wanton pleasures, doting love
are but shadows flying."

Yes. I did all the time. I used to sit in a rocking chair to make it a little more acceptable. I was wicked smart and VERY athletic when I was younger.
