27-year-old border collie whose vegan diet of rice, lentils,
Vegetarian Dogs and Cats

Many vegetarians and vegans feed healthful, meatless diets to their companion animals. One remarkable example is that of Bramble, a 27-year-old border collie whose vegan diet of rice, lentils, and organic vegetables earned her consideration by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest living dog in 2002. Studies have shown that the ailments associated with meat consumption in humans, such as allergies, cancer, and kidney, heart, and bone problems, also affect many nonhumans. Pet food has also been recalled during mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), scares because of the risk that contaminated meat was processed into the food. One deputy commissioner states that cats especially "are susceptible to BSE."

Re: 27-year-old border collie whose vegan diet of rice, lentils,
I have 9 dogs who are all vegetarian (not vegan) and they have this same exact diet. We got them by accident (8 of them were born in this house, one is the mother) and we could not afford to feed them bags of dog food. I had heard that store bought dog food often has nasty fillers in it like CARDBOARD and I decided that I could just feed them what I eat every day. I live on a relatively simple diet of Rice, Lentils with vegetables and spices roasted in butter, and home made flat breads called chapatis.

I just cook up a seperate pot of rice for the dogs and make a bigger pot of lentils and I have the whole house covered, all for probably 3 dollars a day.

Dogs are scavengers by nature and should not be fed processed foods. A raw diet should be OK but they are carnivores by nature. A good raw diet of vegetables and raw meat is what they have evolved on. Dried processed foods, in general, are horrible for pets.

It's all rubbish. There've been LIONS fed vegetables and monitored to have better health.

Incidentally I can get 50 lb bags of lentils locally for about $35. I don't have them too often. Sounds great for the dog, with rice. There may be cheaper beans.

Dogs are only about 2 years old now.

No health problems. They have a ton of energy and they have not had worms. They all survived parvo.

Only 1 dog has been to the vet and that was because she was sick with parvo, and it was only to confirm she had it. The vet said it was unlikely she would survive, but I just took her home and gave her Pediasure to hydrate her and she got better in a few days. All the dogs got parvo (it is contagious) and they all did not suffer hardly any bad side affects. The vet was amazed by this.

They have not been vaccinated because I cannot afford to vaccinate 9 dogs.

and once I knew this Vegan that got hit by a bus and the last thing they said was, "Fuck...I wish I woulda ate a sausage sammich at least once"...then they croaked.

I really couldn't give a shit if anyone wants to live solely on sprouts or meatballs....but all this pius pontificating about what food is right or wrong for some personal reasons is a load of annoying bullshit. Food animals die to be food, Crop pickers die when a piece of machinery eats them, nobody is innocent...STFU and eat whatever you feel like or don't, but quit harping about what other people eat and get over your vegan vaginatarian selves about it.

I agree. I am vegan and have anywhere between 5 to 12 cats here all the time. I make their own cat food, even grinding up bones along with the meat in a grinder, I still have to add supplements to make sure their eyes and heart are healthy, taurine, salmon oil etc. Lack of taurine will cause blindness in cats and cause them to have heart issues. Cats are obligate carnivores.

I think its animal abuse if a dog is not getting a complete nutrient package for its species. Dogs are carnivores and require animal proteins. Most you vegans and vegetarians are as bad as religious fundamentalists to a point of militancy but you still have the freedom to speak your mind something vegheads try to take away from me as well as my food choices.

And it's not necessary to feed an animal another animal.

90% of the population is mind controlled by various systems that continue to cause basic problems.

And remember, you're not a fish, so don't reply with,
fish eat other fish! YOU'RE NOT A FISH. Well unless yr a hybrid, sperm/egg, in other words, a male. lol

No offense, males.

PETA doesn't lie but the animal torture industry does and so do the ppl who support it.

Google vegan diets for cats, you'll find a whole bunch of bull before finding the facts. It's amusing how the meat industry is losing a grip on their psychotic behavior. I love that.

Sure. When I cook a pot of lentils I usually use 3 cups of lentils. I usually cut up 1 bell pepper, and any kind of vegetables you want to use. I use yellow squash, zucchini squash, cabbage, canned crushed tomatoes. Use your discretion, I don't use too much because I am on a budget.

The spices I use are ground coriander, ground cumin, ground fenugreek seeds, turmeric, red chili pepper, paprika. I don't really have a specific amount I use because I grind them all up together in a spice/coffee grinder. This is your standard curry powder mix. I buy my spices from the Indian store. I take a couple tablespoons of butter in a very small roasting pan and melt the butter on medium heat. After the solids are dissolved I add in whole mustard seeds, and roast those until they start foaming. After that I add roughly a half teaspoon of asafoetida (also known as Hing) and mix that thoroughly with the mustard seeds for a minute or so. After that I add in 1-2 table spoons of my ground curry powder mix I made and roast them until they stop foaming. You will start to hear the mustard seeds pop, which means they are done. I cook it for 30 seconds or so more so the mustards seeds roast and pop thoroughly. Then I just pour/scrap the butter and spice mixture together into the pot of cooking lentils.

Then I add 3 tablespoons of pink sea salt to the lentils (about 1 tablespoon per cup of lenetils).

After cooking the lentils for 20-30 more minutes to let any excess liquid boil out and to allow them to get to the proper consistency (a medium liquidy consistancy, like soup) I just mix the lentils and the rice together in a big bowl.

I portion that each into seperate food bowls and allow it to cool for 45 minutes or so until it's only warm to the touch, not enough to burn the dogs mouth or tongue.

The dogs absolutely love it. Their poop is just like regular dog poop except it stinks way less. It is always properly digested and I never find any whole pieces of vegetable or rice or lentils. I've had to clean up a lot of puppy poop so I got pretty close to it.

When I cook the rice I use 6 cups of rice 11 cups of water. This is enough for my dogs because they are fairly small. Rice generally doubles in volume when cooked so it makes about 12 cups of cooked rice (very large pot).

I have 9 dogs who are all vegetarian (not vegan) and they have this same exact diet. We got them by accident (8 of them were born in this house, one is the mother) and we could not afford to feed them bags of dog food. "A sense of common interest can be fostered among individuals, if they know that they are inter-connected, are parts of one Organic System and are the sons and daughters of one Father. Here is the task of all religions; to teach people that all beings of the world are closely inter-related. Although steadfastness or firm belief in God (Nistha) according to some particular faith and eligibility of the individual is congenial for healthy spiritual growth of every individual, religious bigotry which begets enmity is condemnable, as it is against the real interest of the individual and society. Real religion teaches love for one another. Lord Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu propagated the cult of all-embracing Divine Love which brings universal brotherhood on a transcendental plane.

Nah, you couldn't. Given the choice between fresh deer meat or fresh chicken or a bowl of my rice and lentils, the dogs choose the lentils and rice every time. Trust me, my neighbor tries all the time and he's surprised at their reaction.
