Solar storm hysteria unfounded and based upon misconception. See why here.
Since the hypothetical scenarios proposed by some random scientist working at NASA, everywhere you turn there are solar storm catastrophe articles and forum posts and discussions. But they are all based on fundamental misunderstandings. New findings released today clearly show this. Solar storms will NOT wreak havoc on Earth's electronics as this finding shows. It will only affect satellites and astronauts. Simple explanation being that the storm that the sun unleashes actually pushes away the harmful electrons in the radiation belts it generates to begin with. Therefore only affecting electronics in space and not on Earth.

During powerful solar events such as coronal mass ejections, parts of the magnetized outer layers of sun's atmosphere crash onto Earth's magnetic field, triggering geomagnetic storms capable of damaging the electronics of orbiting spacecraft. These cosmic squalls have a peculiar effect on Earth's outer radiation belt, a doughnut-shaped region of space filled with electrons so energetic that they move at nearly the speed of light.

"During the onset of a geomagnetic storm, nearly all the electrons trapped within the radiation belt vanish, only to come back with a vengeance a few hours later," said Vassilis Angelopoulos, a UCLA professor of Earth and space sciences and IGPP researcher.

The missing electrons surprised scientists when the trend was first measured in the 1960s by instruments onboard the earliest spacecraft sent into orbit, said study co-author Yuri Shprits, a research geophysicist with the IGPP and the departments of Earth and space sciences, and atmospheric and oceanic sciences.

"It's a puzzling effect," he said. "Oceans on Earth do not suddenly lose most of their water, yet radiation belts filled with electrons can be rapidly depopulated."

Even stranger, the electrons go missing during the peak of a geomagnetic storm, a time when one might expect the radiation belt to be filled with energetic particles because of the extreme bombardment by the solar wind.

To resolve the mystery, Turner and his team used data from three networks of orbiting spacecraft positioned at different distances from Earth to catch the escaping electrons in the act. The data show that while a small amount of the missing energetic electrons did fall into the atmosphere, the vast majority were pushed away from the planet, stripped away from the radiation belt by the onslaught of solar wind particles during the heightened solar activity that generated the magnetic storm itself.

The carrington event people love to give as an example is not a solar storm, it was a white flare. Flares are electromagnetic radiation and only interfere with communication devices and the ionosphere which the military around the world use for communication. There is no real evidence to show that the sun in its current state will cause an electronic blackout so widespread that we'll lose the ability to use electronic devices or electricity.

Just before dawn the next day, skies all over planet Earth erupted in red, green, and purple auroras so brilliant that newspapers could be read as easily as in daylight. Indeed, stunning auroras pulsated even at near tropical latitudes over Cuba, the Bahamas, Jamaica, El Salvador, and Hawaii.

Even more disconcerting, telegraph systems worldwide went haywire. Spark discharges shocked telegraph operators and set the telegraph paper on fire. Even when telegraphers disconnected the batteries powering the lines, aurora-induced electric currents in the wires still allowed messages to be transmitted.

"What Carrington saw was a white-light solar flare—a magnetic explosion on the sun," explains David Hathaway, solar physics team lead at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

"In the 160-year record of geomagnetic storms, the Carrington event is the biggest." It's possible to delve back even farther in time by examining arctic ice. "Energetic particles leave a record in nitrates in ice cores," he explains. "Here again the Carrington event sticks out as the biggest in 500 years and nearly twice as big as the runner-up."

These statistics suggest that Carrington flares are once in a half-millennium events. The statistics are far from solid, however, and Hathaway cautions that we don't understand flares well enough to rule out a repeat in our lifetime.

So you can either live your lives in fear, believing the sun will explode on us and destroy your way of life or you can learn and know better.

There is still the possibility of it but we'd have to be without our mangetosphere and magnetic field to experience such a doom scenario. Plus it would take the perfect storm type conditions. A CME dense enough and big enough and directly aimed at us, a flare that is extremely powerful and arriving at the same time in the same direction. The chances of that happening are so small it's hard to imagine it ever happening.

Funny, people down vote the thread yet can't even debunk any of this information. True cowards who run from the truth and prefer delusional beliefs. The only reason people want doom is because their lives are so shitty they want them to end and are too cowardly to end it themselves.

Because they want doom even though its not real.
They don't want real doom because that's too scary, they want fake doom.

Hello OP, I usually dont listen to what is being "put out", and always wait and see. I find sometimes, yes, there is more "hype" then necessary...

Yes yes.. so why did the grid go down in Quebec in the 90s for an average solar storm? The threat of power disruptions is always there.

Yes it is, but some seem to think any solar storm can do a lot more then that.

The threat not being able to read and grasp certain things too - CMEs do not cause power outages, only a special type of flares.
