Superbugs spied off the Antarctic coast
This is doom writ large:

BACTERIA that can resist nearly all antibiotics have been found in Antarctic seawater.

Björn Olsen of Uppsala University in Sweden and colleagues took seawater samples between 10 and 300 metres away from Chile's Antarctic research stations, Bernardo O'Higgins, Arturo Prat and Fildes Bay. A quarter of the samples of Escherichia coli bacteria carried genes that made an enzyme called ESBL, which can destroy penicillin, cephalosporins and related antibiotics (Applied and Environmental Microbiology, DOI: 10.1128/AEM.07320-11).

Bacteria with these genes can be even more dangerous than the better known superbug MRSA. That's because the genes sit on a mobile chunk of DNA that can be acquired by many species of bacteria, increasing the incidence of drug-resistant infections such as the E. coli outbreak last year in Germany.

Thread: I am a scientist in Antarctica and I have some important information to pass along

The public is not being told the whole story as it relates to our mission here in Antarctica. The public believes that we are here only to record temperatures of the Earth of yesteryear. This is simply not true. We have recently encountered an area underneath some of the ice that was nothing more than gas. Initial tests of the gas showed the presence of several never before seen species of bacteria. Samples of the gas were taken and these samples were sent back CONUS to have them analyzed in a proper laboratory setting, and the results of the tests surprised us and everyone involved in the drilling of this particular layer.

No one has ever seen these species before. They are in fact a mutation of the bacterial life found on Meteorite ALH84001 in 1996. The difference between our sample and that found on Meteorite ALH84001 is that the bacteria in our sample are still alive and have found a way to adapt to life in the deep frigid ice shelfs in Antarctica.

^Nailed it^

It's a particularly virulent strain that is commonly found in Chicago bath-houses and under Oval Office desks.

my 11 year old has a kidney infection from ecoli.
either wiping wrong or dirty hands, idk.
shes not the cleanest of kids in general.

but we found out today its resistant.
i did not like hearing him tell me this.
she is now on a third type of antibiotic which is so strong she threw it up,
it just exploded out of her, blew right out of her nose too.
i cut the dose in half and it has stayed down.
ill keep her home again tomorrow just to make sure the meds are getting in her.its some nasty stuff too.

the infection went away after the first antibiotic but the fever came back hard and fast not two days after finishing the dose.
the second antiboitic seems to be working until they did a urinalysis this morning.said it was resistant.

i guess they will start mutating this to mix with the bird/swine flu and blame it on climate change.

Re: Superbugs spied off the Antarctic coast
The journal of Urology has recently reported that Testicular Volume has been declining steadily among men in the 18-30 age group since about 1955!

A normal set of testicles is now a rarity and along with volume, hormone production is going down (less testosterone) fewer viable sperm (fewer babies and fewer healthy babies when one is created) and of course they didn't comment about penis size as they probably don't have stats. But my guess would be if testicles are declining, testosterone levels along with it then penile size is probably on the decline, too. Welcome to the feminization of the male, brought to you by Monsanto, Dow Chemical, and Dupont, co-sponsored by Standard Oil, Shell, and kicked into high gear by Atria (once known as RJ Reynolds Tobacco!)

Guys, if you have a normal set of balls, guard them with your life! Seems they're getting more and more rare as time marches onward. Your grandsons may have virtual raisins instead of testicles. Or peanuts! <grin> (couldn't resist that one!)

Many blessings for you and your little one, may she make a swift recovery hf

My 3 yr old has had pneumonia, 3 ear infections and the flu this MONTH, he was nursed for 2 yrs, super healthy - now he's so sickly lately. Just finished his last course of amox-clav last week and now he's resting here on my bed with a fever and has looked "down" since I picked him up from school :(
My parents and sister have all been sick this past couple of weeks from a flu-like virus and just recovered a few days ago. My sis is now coming down with a sore throat and flu like symptoms just DAYS after getting over it. Some of her skin is also peeling off... wtf?
I had the flu 2 weeks ago and am still trying to recover.
We all live in the Houston area. Almost EVERY SINGLE person I know has come down with something this month.
