Tonight... Eros
Tonight, if the weather allows, I'll broadcast a view of one of the largest near earth asteroids, 433 Eros. Eros will be closer to earth today than it has been since 1975, and it won't be this close again until 2056. Check back here at 11 pm eastern time and if the weather permits, I'll broadcast the close approach of Eros (not close enough to worry about though, it'll be almost 70 LD away).

No, it's a reference to the "nibiru insider." Apparently, "astromoner" is the correct pronunciation of "astronomer." Thus, astromut is the correct pronunciation of astronut. ;)

Hey astromut, I dont want to derail your thread but I wanted to ask you a question.

The moon currently has two stars or planets that are atleast in my perspective aligned almost perfectly with it. And interestingly enough Orion is on the other side making it almost seems like a different "arrow" of his.

What are these stars or bodies. SOrry I cant be more specific I have almost no directional know when it comes to the stars.

Astro....

What software are you using to track asteroids with your scope? Been wanting to try my hand at that and photographing satelites (i.e. ISS) with my CPC1100.

Thank God for my kid hounding me to do all this stuff. Keeps me interested and keeps him away from video games!

For tonight I just grabbed the ephemeris for the position of Eros from JPL HORIZONS ( [link to ssd.jpl.nasa.gov] ) and pointed the scope that direction knowing that the asteroid wouldn't move fast enough to put it out of the field of view in the duration of time that my battery power would last. For faster asteroids like 2005 YU55 I just point at an initial position from the ephemeris, then track by hand.

If I'm feeling lazy I'll use Cartes du Ciel ( [link to www.ap-i.net] ) to command the telescope to slew to the asteroid repetitively over time, but the catch is that Cartes does not account for the gravity of earth and the other planets on the asteroid (at least the old version I have doesn't), so it's not useful for near earth asteroids like Eros.

For tracking ISS and other satellites I use Brent Boshart's Satellite Tracker program:

It's an "Arizona" thing (that's apparently his name, or at least what he calls himself). I think he was exposed to too much Nic Cage very early in his life and now he has a "Knowing" complex.
