Looks like the most recent quake was a 5.1 and that was early this morning.

172 km deep and almost 24 hours ago probably isn't capable of causing a localized tsunami.

nearest event

this is however not enough to generate a wave of that magnitude.

There is a low pressure trough near the ITCZ north of Australia which could be producing High Seas due to strong winds. this would be the most probable, High seas can generate short lived rogue waves.

interesting how the ocean can just suddenly sink 13 feet...and then recover just as fast. Or...maybe a sudden rise in the sea floor of that height...and then falling back down.

not the sea floor that would generate a tsunami, the sudden rise and fall of the ocean occurs with rogue wave there is plenty of truthful info on them out there.

I remember the Bp-Oil Spill,
there was one Video where we saw the Ocean Floor
really sucked in and out,
but i do not know if that Video was original or faked!

Do you remember that Video?

Re: Buoy 52402 In Event Mode - 13 Ft. Drop North Of Papau New Guinea - Pacific Ocean Near Philippine Sea
I do remember Alexander Higgins documenting the shifting sea floor during the BP spill. Basically a methane pocket that burst out, causing the sea floor to swell then once it busted out the sea floor fell back to its original point. We discussed it here on GLP at length. The weights attched to this buoy could have risen with a swelling sea floor, showing a difference of 13 feet in depth. And then...the weights returned after the brief swell and return. A rogue wave may also be the culprit as pointed out. However...seems that the buoy is remaining in event mode for some time after just one disruption. And...to have happened the day before off Chile is a bit curious?

I seem to recall on previous bouy discussions that it takes a while to reset a bouy from an event mode. Sometimes a long while.

That is very unnerving

The ship reportedly sank about 9 nautical miles (16 kms) off Finschhafen on the South Pacific nation's north coast, on its way from Kimbe on the island of New Britain to the mainland city of Lae, AMSA said.

The ship's owners, Rabaul Shipping, said it had no information what caused the accident, adding the vessel sank quickly and without sending a distress message.

What I'm not understanding is that there are two buoys showing activity..but one is by Chile and the second one is on the west side of the Pacific. I know there was an EQ both places but since I don't understand all this map stuff....someone enlighten me please?

this is pretty unreal.

a 14 foot wave basically capsized a LARGE boat....sending it to the bottom....one might think there would be some survivors floating around though right?

what time of day did the boat sink?
