Santorini Piking Up!!! Heads up everyone: Alaska Cleveland Volcano Alert New status is Orange A new Lava dome is building in the summit crater. It was 130 feet in Diameter as of January 30, 2012. On February 1, 2012 the AVO/USGS issued a Volcanic Activity Notice on the Cleveland Volcano raising the status from YELLOW to ORANGE. A ORANGE status indicates that the Cleveland Volcano is exhibiting heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption, timeframe uncertain, OR eruption is underway with no or minor volcanic-ash emissions [ash-plume height specified, if possible]. Santorini Piking Up!!! Volcano Activity in USA on Wednesday, 01 February, 2012 at 04:12 (04:12 AM) UTC. Description According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, the aviation color color code and the alert level of Cleveland Volcano was upgraded on Tuesday to "Orange" and "Watch" to reflect new satellite data indicating increased activity. The east central Aleutian Chain volcano, which sits 45 miles west of the community of Nikolski, has spent much of the past year teasing that it would erupt, and its status has alternated between "Yellow/Advisory" and the more serious "Orange/Watch" four times since July 2011. The AVO reports that the lava dome that had developed at Cleveland last year was mostly removed by a brief explosive episode at the end of December. But new satellite images indicate that a fresh lava dome, approximately 130 feet in diameter, has formed in the summit crater. There have been no explosions or ash emissions detected during the current lava eruption, but the AVO notes that it remains possible for intermittent, sudden explosions of blocks and ash to occur at any time, and ash clouds exceeding 20,000 feet above sea level may develop. Because Cleveland is not covered by real-time seismic sensors, such explosions and their associated ash clouds may go undetected in satellite imagery for hours. [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |

Santorini Piking Up!!! The beautifully symmetrical Mount Cleveland stratovolcano forms the western half of the uninhabited Chuginadak Island in the eastern Aleutians, connected to the eastern half of the island by a narrow isthmus. It is one of the regions most active volcanoes, but at present has no seismic network. Monitoring of its activity is largely based on satellite observation. Background: The 1730-m-high Mount Cleveland has the native name of Chuginadak, referring to the Aleut goddess of fire, who was thought to reside on the volcano. Numerous large lava flows descend the steep-sided flanks of the volcano. It is possible that some 18th to 19th century eruptions attributed to Carlisle should be ascribed to Cleveland (Miller et al., 1998). In 1944 Cleveland produced the only known fatality from an Aleutian eruption. Recent eruptions from Mount Cleveland have been characterized by short-lived explosive ash emissions, at times accompanied by lava fountaining and lava flows down the flanks. In February, 2001, Cleveland had 3 explosive events that produced ash clouds as high as 12 km (39,000 ft) above sea level. That eruption also produced a rubbly lava flow and hot avalanche that reached the sea. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com] |

I'm also concered because there is also possbility landslides and tsunami is also possible because there can be really big earthquakes. Quoting: so-gui-li I don't know about it... it's worst than i thought! |

AVO Volcano Activity Notification Search Results Search criteria: AVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice Volcano: Cleveland (CAVW #1101-24-) Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH Previous Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE Previous Aviation Color Code: YELLOW Issued: Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 3:21 PM AKST (20120201/0021Z) Source: Alaska Volcano Observatory Notice Number: 2012/A2 Location: N 52 deg 49 min W 169 deg 56 min Elevation: 5676 ft (1730 m) Area: Aleutians Alaska Volcanic Activity Summary: Renewed eruptive activity of Cleveland Volcano has been observed in satellite data, and AVO is raising the Aviation Color Code to Orange and the Alert Level to Watch. A new lava dome has been observed in the summit crater, and as of 30 January 2012 was approximately 40 meters (130 feet) in diameter. There have been no observations of ash emissions or explosive activity during this current lava eruption. The lava dome that formed throughout the fall-winter of 2011 was largely removed by the explosive activity on 25 and 29 December, 2011. It remains possible for intermittent, sudden explosions of blocks and ash to occur at any time, and ash clouds exceeding 20,000 feet above sea level may develop. Such explosions and their associated ash clouds may go undetected in satellite imagery for hours. If a large, explosive, ash-producing event occurs, seismic, infrasound, or volcanic lightning may be detected by local and regional monitoring networks. There is no real-time seismic monitoring network on Mount Cleveland. Additional information on Cleveland Volcano and the current activity may be found at this link: [link to www.avo.alaska.edu] Please see [link to www.avo.alaska.edu] for complete definitions of Aviation color codes and Volcano alert levels. Recent Observations: [Volcanic cloud height] No volcanic cloud observed. Remarks: Cleveland volcano forms the western half of Chuginadak Island, a remote and uninhabited island in the east central Aleutians. It is located about 75 km (45 mi.) west of the community of Nikolski, and 1500 km (940 mi.) southwest of Anchorage. The volcano's most recent significant eruption began in February, 2001 and it produced 3 explosive events that produced ash clouds as high as 12 km (39,000 ft) above sea level. The 2001 eruption also produced a rubbly lava flow and hot avalanche that reached the sea.
