Re: School Chipped My Son's Shoe**UPDATE**
Two days ago my son came home with a chip attached to his shoe that resembled a small master lock and had a number on it. This is supposedly to monitor his activity for a grant that the school has applied for.

Problem is he is one out of 60 kids in the district that were hand picked by the the grantor and I was never notified or asked if this was alright!

Anyone else had this happen or know exactly what is in this lock looking thing?

This link talks about RFID tags being put on people and their shoes to track them for races and such. They even talk about there being tracking mats that monitor when the trackers pass over them. I would guess this could keep track of when children arrive and exit the school building. The video also says there are many types of transponders and they're as low as $.50 each, but well under $1.00.

In my opinion, this can lead to some scary shit.

I was assured that there was no RFID chip in this thing that it is strictly for monitoring his physical activity. When they are done with this study tho it is read by a computer.

Re: School Chipped My Son's Shoe**UPDATE**
i tried to resist posting, but couldnt... how about just calling the school and asking (calmly, politely, non confrontationally) what the object in question is, does, and why they strapped it to your offspring? then, maybe examine the booger for an id tag (which it will have) and do a web search for it, using the manufacturer, and model number... once you actually know what it is and does, then decide on a course of action... sounds like a pedometer or tachimeter, as fastening it to a shoe sets it up for a fairly harsh environment, and hardly insures it being brought to school daily (as opposed to say hooking it to his bookbag, which would be a fairly constant companion)... "check it out before you freak out" is usually a sensible policy
 Quoting: ambiguity unlimited

No it is not a sensible policy with out her consent. That is bullshit to assume that it is ok for them to do this in this case. What will be next that the Gov decides to track. Get real, this is intrusion.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8786935

if you want info from them, it's much more likely to come if you seem calm, and rational... come in waving a shoe and jumping up and down on admin desks is an excellent way to get tazed and busted these days...then depending on answers given, you escalate as needed... if it's just a pedometer or tachimeter, and serves no purpose other that a PE program, it isnt a nefarious intrusion, so a polite demand to "opt out", and that no such participation be expected without consultation should be sufficient... if it's a more intrusive device, well, then you get pissed... getting branded a "tin foil hat nutjob" doesnt do parent or child any good... getting arrested for disorderly does neither any good either(in a single parent home without local family, that adds up to your kid being placed into "temporary foster care", which im sure all here would agree isnt a great idea) one can always escalate voicing displeasure, but it is VERY hard to reduce in a way that doesnt raise "flags" to concerned "educators"(know it all busy bodies)... always better to resolve in a way that doesnt bring heat down on you, if practical and possible

As low as .50 ea.

The link about crevecour schools said they were $90 ea.
Shows how much mark-up in prices when dealing with Federal institutions. It's also a good reason for OP not to destroy it, the way things work the school would bill him for the $90.

Duct tape the shoes to the top of a delivery truck. Let the school watch them travel the city all day while the kid is in class.

Here is a pic, I have removed the number on the front of it because it's obviously directly connected to my child as it's read by a computer.

Now that this is posted, I'll just go back to being a good little sheep and letting the schools put whatever they want on my child without consent and NEVER ask questions again as some of you have suggested.rolleyes

By the way, I was told that if I remove it or destroy it that I would be charged 100 bucks for it.

That's one expensive "pedometer"!

Students aren't cattle, but what really makes me upset is that there are now cases of these things tracking outside of school time like the camera/laptop incident. It's way overstepping the line to have something permanently attached to anything that isn't designated just for school use. I wouldn't like anyone to be chipped in the school either but may concede if it were gym shoes that stayed in the students locker at school.

Exactly! That's the most bothersome part of this for me.

I understand health at school, research, blah blah blah but no consent, read by a computer, $100 pedometer that he's not to remove and getting the runaround didn't set well with me.
