My Dad
He was born in Baltimore 14 pounds 7 ounces.
He may still have the record.

Growing up he ate a lot of oysters because they didn't have much else to eat, it was the depression and his Dad was a drunk. You can get oysters off the rocks at low tide.

They kept warm at night with layers of newspapers under their clothes. baltimore gets fukkin cold- especially for little kids.

As a young man, he joined the Army coz he could see what was happening with Herr Hitler, and he knew his country would be at war- that was 1938.

in 1940, he transferred to the USN, and by 1942 he was on convoy escort supplying the russkis against he krauts running materiel into archangel. If you ever read about the convoys you will know how brutal it was.

Ships sunk by the u boats very often, and so cold they had to be chipping ice off the upper works so the ship would not be top heavy and turn turtle. they did not stop to look for survivors.

Later- he was on the d-day landings as chief of engines on LSTs.

After that was the italian landings.

He served at one point on the Eldridge- just before the normandie was blown up at the docks in New York.

His war experience was no picnic.

He got a degree in engineering on the GI Bill and worked all over the world on petroleum projects.

He has beat leukemia and has had parkinson's for nearly 20 years.

he will be 90 in May.

Problem is - he is fighting the goddam war again in his mind and he is about worn out.

He may be dying.

I have a ticket booked to come over there for his birthday, and I would dearly love to see him in health and happiness.

therefore, I ask all you well intentioned folks to offer prayers for this man - either for his recovery or painless release in good time.

His name is Bill, and he lives in Tulsa - there are not many left of his generation and he put his life on the line like many others for a better future.
Thank you.

Re: My Dad
He is among the many unsung heroes who built this country from the ground up, with conviction, sweat, tears and a blood sacrafice that can not be paid back only honored. There is still the real America out there. Any one who does not understand these words, does not understand America.

I pray for his safe passage, try to see him soon, be gentle with him, for soon he may not walk among us, he will head to a better place............Godspeed and prayers with you!!

Re: My Dad
I'll say a prayer for your Dad! It sounds like he has had quite a life! If you also want more prayers for your Dad, Lisa has started a prayer thread and you'll get alot of prayer warriors praying for him as well. We've already had a couple of miraculous things that have happened to people since the thread was started a couple of days ago. In my signature line is the thread, if you're interested in posting there as well.

Re: My Dad
Father in Heaven, we ask for help on behalf of Bill. He's overcome so many difficulties in his life, suffered through many trials. As you already know, he's very weak right now in mind body and soul. Weak and afraid of his future, he's not at peace. We humbly ask you Lord to reveal yourself to him in a very personal way so he can know you and accept you and your gift of salvation if he hasn't already done so. Please comfort him now in his time of need, and rebuke the spirit of fear and anxiety. We ask that his life be prolonged enough for his son to make it out there for a much needed visit. We also ask for your Holy Spirit to bring peace and comfort to his soul. When it is his time to leave this body behind, we ask Lord that you will guide him home easily, peacefully, and painfree. Please send an angel to guide him home when the time is right. Send your Holy Spirit to minister to him until then.

Re: My Dad
My father just passed a couple of weeks ago. He was 87.

His story is remarkably similar to your dads.

He was 13 lbs at birth . Born at home . First child of 9.

Similar Depression era survival stories in the mountains.

Was a Marine at 17 . Saw some the worst of WW11 in Okinawa.

Spent 5 days in a foxhole with the remains of his buddies.

He wouldn't talk about the war much at all until very late in life.

We recorded some of his accounts.

He died of leukemia a year after my mother died of Parkinsons.

In a way those of us whose parents were active duty war vets are survivors of that war as well. Some will understand what I mean by that.

Prayers go out to your father.
