you have to remember that your google accounts are now all connected as well, this includes YOUTUBE.

good luck replacing that one with another site.

I recently started using IXQUICK as my default search engine in Foxfire. Seems to work pretty well...

Startpage.com gives you google results, but you are not tracked or traced.

the only thing I don't like about startpage.com is that I hate Google, and want to avoid them entirely!

You are correct, but...

they only USE google, google cant use your details and thats why I suggested them...simple.

make them pay but pay them nothing...

sooner or later they might have a re-think about their lust for the almighty dollar.

If not, then they will get what they asked for...just read this thread and the opinions on it, they seem to be pretty unified...no?...ha!

Re: GOOGLE'S PRIVACY CHANGES- A SIMPLE INSTANT CURE FOR EVERYONE
It goes way beyond what search engine you use. Google is so ingrained into the internet. If you have have ever watched a YOUTUBE video, then you have their mark. The have deep pockets and the don't mind paying sites to allow them to places a super cookie.

Try opening regedit and do a find on google. They just rub our faces in it. These are the things they are telling us. They could just as easily have a cookie called systemfile or something similar and no one would be the wiser.

Google's searches are rubbish now. Nothing like it used to be. You need to know EXACTLY what you're looking for now in order to find it. And even then, unless you know how to search for information properly using all the search engine tips and tricks, you'll still not get what you need. Whenever I use google I'm always forced to stop certain words from showing up in my searches by using the - function because it gives me millions of irrelevant results based upon what other people have searched instead of what I'm looking for.

Older than youtube and has always been better. They also had a feature which allowed sponsors to sponsor videos and for people to make money through that way before youtube. They are also independent.

Youtube is just a copy of meta cafe and other video sites anyway. The only reason they got so popular was because of advertising, not because of being good.

Sounds to me like very clever data mining, and that scares the living be je#sus out of me, just greed driven, why cant we have a "pure" web service where all the service is absolutely and totally committed to the original principles of freedom and complete privacee..

if I had the skills I'd be the very first to offer that sort of service, its what I believe in and what I think just about 99.99% of users want, so why are we not getting this.

Hell I dont ever want to be a millionaire, I just want to do the right thing and simply be comfortable with my life.

I'd like to know how to remove the built in one in firefox and replace it with something else.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1149784

To remove a search engine: Click on the logo of the search engine with the arrow pointing down (it's on the upper right hand side for me) -> click "Manage Search Engines..." -> choose an engine from the list and click "Remove" (bottom right)

To add a search engine: Depends on the particular search engine. Some have a plug-in for Firefox, some don't. Startpage however has. You can download it from here [link to startpage.com (secure)]

Google is nothing without the people who use it. The only solution, stop using it. This is something anyone can do.

Maybe GLP should promote independent sites like metacafe? So people can see that there are plenty of alternatives and I'm fairly certain any service google provides can be found elsewhere with a better quality of service.

I'm not all that computer literate, but what I do know is this...

Just this evening GLP banned me for essentially spamming by using multiple IP addresses.

I wrote back to GLP and pointed out this thread and how I was now using

[link to www.startpage.com (secure)]

and they immediately unbanned me, so as far as I can see this browser, even though it dovetails into google, doesent give google anything worthwhile to use that might be intrusive in your internet activities.

its an htpp(s), log on, meaning that it is secure from the little I do understand, but if Im wrong, please correct me, Im happy to learn...always!

I am boycotting Googl. I stopped going through Firefox and started using safari. Then I switched to "Pageflakes" for my home page (not as versatile as iGoogl, but hopefully they will grow as they get more users. I also closed my Gmail account, and started using Hushmail. I set my search engine to startpage, and hopefully as more people start using it, they will become as efficient as Googl.

In recent times we have been told that Google intends to change its policies regarding sharing information it collects on us.

Naturally this is an untennable and totally obnoxious concept to our valued privacy.

Even Microsoft according to a side heading on todays GLP's main page..the third of Feb 2012, have very publicly criticized Google's intentions, with a heavy advertising campaign, and rightfully so.

Fortunately there is a simple cure that will circumvent this intrusion, all you need to do is to copy and paste the following into your existing browsers "Start Page"
I use IE, so I can only vouch for its use there and it appears to be functioning perfectly.

Here it is...
