Anonymous Coward User ID: 6543219 United States 02/02/2012 09:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In recent times we have been told that Google intends to change its policies regarding sharing information it collects on us. Quoting: arkay Naturally this is an untennable and totally obnoxious concept to our valued privacy. Even Microsoft according to a side heading on todays GLP's main page..the third of Feb 2012, have very publicly criticized Google's intentions, with a heavy advertising campaign, and rightfully so. Fortunately there is a simple cure that will circumvent this intrusion, all you need to do is to copy and paste the following into your existing browsers "Start Page" I use IE, so I can only vouch for its use there and it appears to be functioning perfectly. Here it is... [link to www.startpage.com (secure)] If anyone can find fault or further endorse this Im certain everyone will appreciate the information being supplied. I also deleted my google account. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 944501 Australia 02/03/2012 01:10 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well this means I will need to close my gmail account. Any suggestions???? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1329586 Theres always yahoo, but its a preference thing. Then there is hotmail. Thats two that I know of, but would love more options too. Suggestions please! Im currently with my ISP but I do use gmail for archiving important stuff just in case I have a major failure and over time that has happened a couple of times and Ive lost a lot of date that I caused me a bit of grief! So, Im looking too. Hell email services cant be THAT huge to set up a complete service on a small pay by the year basis, Id be happy to have something like that. Something that is say just like say hotmail but guaranteed to be totally reliable, fast and unquestionably private, who wouldnt. Could be a good business opportunity for the right person. Maybe Jullian Asange might like to look at it, he had a pretty big set up and from what I hear his website has taken a pretty big hit. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 944501 Australia 02/03/2012 06:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ok, well all that said and already with some good and valuable information. I'm going to request that a pin for this information might be appropriate as it really does affect millions of internet users and also at a time when our freedoms and privacy are being so overtly attacked from multiple directions and interests. This just seems to be an important solution for the average Joe and Jill to avoid his or her private information being splattered everywhere, so please endorse my request to have this pinned, so that more people can have an opporunity to learn that they have alternatives and that we are not hostage to gigantic meglamaniac dollar driven faceless companies. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1257580 United States 02/03/2012 06:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've been using Bing since the Goog wants to be Nazis, Bing sucks compared to the great beast Google, but i'll get used to it.. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7774914 Same here - only use Google when Bing doesn't get what I need. Going to unload all Google apps off the android at the end of the month (Android of course has to stay, but all otheer Google apps are going bye-bye) |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1257580 United States 02/03/2012 06:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Google's new algorithm sucks. I can't find what I am looking for any more. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9581698 They dicked with it last year, and now every search for product churns out endless eBay referrer links. Too big to fail? I don't think so. Google can easily be replaced by a better search engine. You can really tell when the beancounters took over from the techies. |

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, some look productive and very well worth further investigation. Please keep them coming. And again I request that this thread get pinned because of how many people this google "move" will negatively impact. As many people as possible need this info....agreed?? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1257580 United States 02/03/2012 07:22 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Dump Gmail for ? We need a list of everything Google does - and alternates available. Google makes their money from advertising - CTR (click through rates) are the benchmark. NEVER click on any Google links to businesses. Instead, just cut & paste the URL into the browser (seperate window might help?) - you still get where you want to go, but advertisers will see traffic from Google wither. In fact, that would be a neat plug-in, something that would bypass Google when clicking on anything, yet still use their search engine. |

They have what we call "Tall Poppy Syndrome" here in Australia. And we are real good at correcting those self inflated pre-dispositons. How do I know, I tried it once, it was a terrific lesson in humility. And...Im proud to admit I learnt from my stupitity. I think Im a better person today for it. |

Suggest this thread get pinned... 550 views is just NOT going to make any significant difference to googles plans and we all need to have some options. Thats why this needs to stay "Front Page" for a while...just to give all the floaters on GLP a chance to find an alternative. Please help here.. |

It is probably one of the most important opportunities that we might have at re-gaining our freedoms and internet inderpendance. Once again, I simply request any and all to offer their knowledge on this matter to assist us all with options and alternatives...conglomerates are always ultimately self focused and not necessarily beneficial to the overall good of the masses, as is the case at hand. So good on you and please keep it moving |

Missouri Foxtrotter User ID: 10015094 United States 02/03/2012 09:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Startpage.com gives you google results, but you are not tracked or traced. the only thing I don't like about startpage.com is that I hate Google, and want to avoid them entirely! No trees were killed in the sending of this message, however a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1564149 Bulgaria 02/03/2012 09:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What do you think about www.duckduckgo.com ?? Is it better in terms of privacy (the creator say they do no tracking at all) or it's Google in disguise? You know, something like false alternative created by Google so we can think that we have choice like Pepsi vs Cola. |
