Which rifle to buy for when the SHTF?

A quick search indicates that the NRA puts on matches at Camp Perry. I doubt if they limit it to military only with military rifles.

Seemed silly that AR's would be used on a military base.

But if the NRA is setting up matches, then yea.. you'll get all sorts of civilian firearms there.

Declared a "Destructive Device" under the NFA by the ATF....they had to be turned in or registered .....

it was the thin barrel version and did more than expected.....i would love to shoot that new bull barrel version.....i own a browning 7 mm mag with boss system...looks like the new ruger system was inspired by the boss browning made adjustable muzzle......using remington loads.....that is a killer i can feel it lol

The .17 hmr round looks so much better than the .22

no shit.....innu people in the arctic switch from big calibers to 17 hmr.......accurate so you can make a head shot and waste no meat.......helps when you shoot small games or even a caribou

get a 30 rd clip for it, not hard to mod.

the power and durability of an AK, with the accuracy of an AR (almost)..

is good for everything from perimeter defense, to hunting deer.

A good chrome lined yugo can be had for under $300

A norinco, for about the same.... just get a chrome lined, b/c much of the cheap surplus ammo you'll be tempted to get for it can be corrosive...

good deals can be had, just gotta hunt them out....

I have no idea where people hear this, what sucks is they then repeat it. Sorry but I've shot SKS's and they are not as accurate as a AK let alone a good AR15. A SKS is good to about 300 meters at the most, and that'd be like at 4 MOA or worse. A good combat ready AR15 can shoot sub-MOA all day long if the shooter is good enough to do it.

Nothing fancy about it. It's the way the guns are built, the mini has a mostly unsupported barrel and gas piston system. The Ar15's barrel is held on by a barrel nut at the receiver, that and the straight line recoil design is what makes AR15's so accurate out of the box. The mini is a good gun, not knocking that, there's just no way it's that accurate without a lot of, time, effort, and money, and then it's stil just so so compared to other rifle designs. Glad you have one and like it. I myself wouldn't mind having a Mini-30 to plink with, but the damn ruger mags are way to much for my taste. I'm spoiled with 14 dollar magpul pmags for my AR :).

well you must have shot a shitty SKS that wasn't set up right.

last time I shot a yugo SKS was right after I shot a Russian AK.

THE SKS GROUP WAS WAY TIGHTER than the AK, at the same distance, everyone at the range was dumping on the AK after this. The AK group was very, very loose, the SKS, was all in about 3 inch. for you to say you don't know why people repeat it??.. I'm not REPEATING IT, THIS was personal experience. I SHOT THEM BOTH WITIN 2 MINUTES OF EACH OTHER.

just on barrel length alone, the SKS has advantage, which is the single biggest factor in distance accuracy.

I'm sure many who have shot both side to side will swoop in to discredit you...

you'd be in about the 5% minority who would say the AK had better accuracy..

I've always liked the SKS myself.

I absolutely agree with this, but with a twist.

1) SKS semi auto carbine. predecessor to the AK. less weight to carry with its integral 10 round internal mag. throw a scout scopes rail and a truglo red dot.

2) Mosin Nagant

3) Remington 870

4) Ruger SR9c for sidearm. very accurate follow up shots. reliable. compact.

5)ruger 10/22 w/ scope. the assassins choice.

or.......

a Springfield Armory M1A Socom II with full rails in Urban Camo and Springfield Xd-45 if you got the cash.

you do have several good points here.....time and effort is a must with a mini.....i never said that an AR was inferior than a mini....it sure is more advanced since the mini was designed in the late 70`s.....none the less ruger came up with a classic device that is still respected to this very day.....to be honest that gun feels good in my hands.....i own a vz 858 and i like the mini better.....mini 30 would be somethin more like knock down power.....would mind having one....so as an AR......

AR's sucked when they were born and they still suck today.
God knows how many people have died with a jambed AR in their hands.
The forward assist on the AR was put there because of the pervasive jambing problems.
Anything is better than an AR and the Mini-14 or better, the Mini-30 is WAY WAY better.

no shit....m-16 in it`s early days use to jam to the point where soldiers had to strip and clean them up during combat while others would cover.....i`m not sayin the AR is not a good rifle but reliability is a life saver....have you tried a mini-30......tell me how it gives....
