AMEN brother

I hate glock because they are ugly
sure, everybody says they love glock
shoot my beretta and then tell me you love glock
go to their website
they make 472 different glocks and they all look exactly the same
like a black brick with a trigger

fuck glock

You consider a gun that is pure perfection when it comes to functionality and dependability as "garbage"?

Look... It's REAL simple...

The OP didn't say he wanted something "pretty" to look at. He wants good, solid, dependable defense weapon.

The Glock is light, tough, super dependable, and designed to last through MILLIONS of rounds, with only basic maintenance.

Used by more police and military than any other single pistol.

Garbage??

Hardly.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10132438

I still think they are garbage, and I am a vet who has fired almost everything ever made, in many countries.

Especially for a new shooter. Beretta fits like a glove, Glock feels like it is a trigger connected to A shoe.

I am curious, and no offense here, are you a cop?

Also, which militaries use them en masse, and I'm not talking about only elite units, but Armies?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10133295

So you think "elite units" make bad choices in firearms?

Anyhoooo... Do some research. Google is your friend.

well, at least Google USED to be your friend. Or at least PRETENDED to be your friend... lol.

If your going to go with a glock check out smith & wesson sigmas almost identical to the glocks except the s&w have a heavier trigger pull and they are half the price of a glock.
 Quoting: patdeez84

Reliable? Same quality?
 Quoting: Mojofabulous

Yes I have the s&w 9mm that I used for my armed cleet training and I have put well over a 1000 rounds threw it and it has never once jammed. As far as quality yes they are good only bad thing is they come with a real heavy trigger the 9mm comes with a 7 or 9 pound trigger while the glock comes with a 5 pound trigger. If you get one just ask the gun shop to put a diffrent trigger pull on it they will probably do it for 20 bucks. You should be able to pick one up for around 250 for and the 9mm and .40 are the same price
 Quoting: patdeez84

They are nice though...

Might have to pick me one up.
 Quoting: WTF Paco

The only thing I have ever really heard people bitch about is the fact that the s&w have a heavier trigger but for half the price I can pay to get the trigger fixed

Re: Seeking advice for home defense handgun.
If you dont ever intend to conceal carry it you want a full size Glock. Not a Compact.

So your choice is a G17, G22 or G21

These are 9mm .40 and .45 caliber

9mm and .40 guns are the same size and the .45 is slightly bigger.

If you are a big guy get a .45

Its the heaviest but has the best stopping power.

.40 cal is nice but the ammo is more expensive then 9mm.

You could get a G22 .40 cal and put a 9mm Conversion Barrel in it to shoot 9mm for target practice. Then go back to the .40 cal for defense rounds.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7340804

sound advice thanks. I'm not a big guy at all. 5'6.5 and small hands.

Is there any realistic risk of a 9mm round not stopping someone compared to a .40?
 Quoting: Mojofabulous

That's what 15 round clips were made for.

By the way, if you are not a big guy, with big hands, get yourself the Glock 19. It's the more compact version of the 17, and holds 15 rounds.

Middle one in the vid, the "ultra lite" but with a shrouded hammer. Only fires the 2 1/2 410's but for how light it is that's a good thing.

well over 1000 round through the Glock 19 I use to have...not one single jam or fail to feed.

Traded it off for a Glock 26 to have something smaller as a carry weapon... only 200 or so rounds through it so far and no problem yet.

Maybe this doesn't apply to you... but the majority of people I have met that "hate Glocks" are equivalent to the "hipsters" when it comes to music.

If it's popular and people like it... then it's "shitty" and "awful." They are the kinds of people that want to be seen as "original" and "outside of the box" so they appear more knowledgable about guns.

In terms of reliability, ease of breakdown, weight, and accuracy... arguing that a Glock "sucks" is stupid. Not to mention they don't have the fail to feed issue with hollow-points that many guns have because of the way the barrel (and thus the ramp) slopes downward when the slide comes back. (Many other companies are mimicking this design too for that reason).

If you can provide me with significant evidence as to why you think they suck then I might give a shit... and no, you telling me that you know a guy who knows a guy who's Glock jammed on him and because of that he got butt-raped by an Indonesian tranny does not constitute significant evidence.

If your going to go with a glock check out smith & wesson sigmas almost identical to the glocks except the s&w have a heavier trigger pull and they are half the price of a glock.

Reliable? Same quality?

Get the Glock.

I haven't seen patdeez84 give one good piece of advice, since he joined the forum.

Seen one hell of a lot of stupid come out of him though.

You WILL NOT go wrong with a Glock. And like I ad before, check into the G19. It's smaller than the 17, but not one of those compact Glocks. It's JUST RIGHT for a 5'6" dude.

I'm 6' and I love mine.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10132438

Ok, lets say I am going to get EITHER a g19 or a smith and wesson M&P:

as in this one:
[link to www.smith-wesson.com]

Is the glock better in any way than that gun? Because if they're the same and similar prices, I really like the appearance of the M&P more. BUT, if the glock is better, I'll go glock.
 Quoting: Mojofabulous

Since you are on GLP, I'll throw this out there.

Lawenforcemnt & a lot of civilians carry glocks. In a sfanscenario, there would be plenty of parts available.
It's all about slim chances but a slim chance is better than none.

Good point. Alright guys, I'm pretty sure I've decided to either get the G19 or the M&P 9mm. I'm gonna try to find a firing range that will let me handle each of them so I can decide.

Last question and I'll let you guys go. Laser sight and or light, should I consider one for home defense? I'm kind of paranoid I'd shine the light in my eyes by accident and blind myself...

Re: Seeking advice for home defense handgun.
pistols for home defense = very weak

would honestly consider that saiga 12g
and you can never. ever go wrong with an ar platform check out noveske!

shotgun/rife>pistol for home defense

pistols are good enough to buy enough time to get to a real weapon...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6257277

Here's the thing. I want close access to my weapon but I have 3 young nieces and a nephew that visit very often. A handgun I can easily hide from them and still have quick access. It's much harder to do that with a shotgun or rifle.

I admit a shotgun is appealing but I just don't think I'm ready for that yet.
 Quoting: Mojofabulous

the shotgun will be under your bed, the pistol will be something you can carry daily and probably be what you use if something happens.

i agree with the argentinian in the rifle thread, glock 19 is a great model. 9mm is a common calibre, its cheap to shoot, the glock 19 is fairly small and concealable, its light and very solid, so it will very likely be a handgun you would carry daily if needed but its big enough to perform on pair with a full size handgun. 15 rounds standard in the clip, can inrease to 17, and with a small enough grip to fit all hands (unlike the larger calibers).

Or at least PRETENDED to be your friend... lol.

Excerpt from Wiki in reference to Glock:

"commanding 65% of the market share of handguns for United States law enforcement agencies, as well as supplying numerous national armed forces, security agencies, and law enforcement agencies in 48 countries.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10132438

Elite units can select firearms based on personal preference, that does not extend to glock, I guarantee that.
Elite units know exactly what weapon is the best for the job.

I have never seen a NATO army that issues Glock as the standard sidearm, but I have seen lots of law enforcement use them. With the exception of some smaller Euro forces.

In my experience, the majority of law enforcement agents, regardless of the agency they work for, are far from "experts" on firearms. Not to say all, but a lot. They are lucky if hey don't shoot themselves in the foot when trying to pass their yearly qualification ( for the second or third try). Also the politicians purchase the pistols, not the people using them.We all know how smart they are.

You are a cop.

Glock sucks

lol
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10133295

You'll be able to get that "Red Rider' BB gun next year for Christmas, son.

Go to bed ... it's way past your bedtime .. c'mon - the adults are talkin now ...

IF the light on your gun is shining on your face, you have bigger problems to deal with. All fun aside...

You need a light more then you need a laser. ( My opinion). Get a pressure activated button on the light so you can turn it on and off with ease.

I've never seen a point to lasers on a handgun... if it's dark (like it will likely be in a home defense situation).... you will have no idea what you are suppose to put the laser on...

I'd suggest night-sights and a light. For Glocks.. the Glock brand light is $100.. but you can find other brands at a cheaper price. Night sights will run you about $100 too...
