I have not used anything on my hair since February 2012. I also started cleaning my hair with Baking Soda and Water. Wow. My hair is super soft.

I went for a year without shampooing my hair, it just ended up looking really gross, especially after we came back from the beach and trying to rinse it out water didnt help. I was trying the self cleaning hair thing. Now I partly self clean my hair, I just water wash it on the days I dont shampoo. Maybe the trick is to just use shampoo less of the time.
 Quoting: Haelo

The trick is to substitute shampoo with something natural you fucking idiot. The 'no poo' thing is about not using alcohol to wash your hair and something else like baking soda, with cider vinegar and coconut oil to condition.

Who shoved the stick up your ass you fucking asshole, I was just stating what didnt work for my hair, that was rather unnecessary.

I have been going without shampoo on and off for years. I have settled with an all natural SLS and paraben free shampoo. My hair has been great, no issues. It feels much nicer than it did when I just washed with baking soda and ACV to condition. I don't use any conditioners now.

Perhaps if I wasn't on hard water I could use the baking soda option but as it is, I found my hair was way too greasy and weird looking. It wasn't bad, I just wanted my hair to feel lighter.

Avoiding conventional shampoos and the like is a HUGE step to making yourself more toxin free. Careful what SOAP you use, and remember that EVERY FUCKING THIGN you put on your skin or hair gets absorbed into you!! So, when you read that list of ingredients and none of them are pronouncable, yeah, those are going into your organs. So be careful.

Baking soda and ACV really does work, but I know for me my water quality where I live sucks and I get too much buildup. Once I move I will likely go back to the no- poo.

If you're using baking soda and it isn't working because you have hard water, you need to boil the water first. Once your water starts to boil, let it go for 10 minutes. Slowly add your 1 tbsp of baking soda (it will fizz and bubble, so add it slowly). Let your baking soda water cool down before pouring it into your bottle. There should be a white film at the bottom of your pot; do not pour that into your bottle.

My hair is down to my rear, super curly (I'm talking ringlets), thick and it's normally very dry. I use 1 tbsp baking soda in a cup of boiled water. This leaves my hair very soft and clean. I also use about 1 oz. of Apple Cider Vinegar in a cup of water as conditioner. This helps me manage my hair and avoid knots.

My hair smells clean, not perfumed. There is no ACV smell.

I stopped shampooing a year ago and no ones said a thing. I heard somewhere that shampoo is just a pointless product that they have people buying even though it doesn't do anything, so I thought
"fuck it, I'm open minded, I'll give it a week and see what happens."

I never looked back.

Using baking to wash hair makes no sense. Hair is naturally acidic so apple cider vinegar, it being acidic, would do best. Baking soda is a base, which would open the cuticles of your hair, causing it to be weaker...

Just change your hair products to natural ones. Make your own hair gel by boiling flaxseeds. Use coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil, etc to moisturize, depending on the thickness of your hair because some are heavier than others. If your going to use essential oils such as peppermint oil etc, then use it with the oils I said earlier, because essential oils are very concentrated.

I've started this too, ever since I came across this thread.....

My hair is mid-back length and very course, VERY thick and wavy/curly.....ALWAYS had the whole "Rosanne Rosannna Danna" thing going. And in the humidity - forget looking like a human. Also - I've been trying to grow it out for years and it won't grow longer than mid-back.

I do the baking soda and apple cider vinegar thing once a week and have had NO problem with oiliness. I use water only on the other days.

Here are the changes that have happened:

My hair is growing finally. I've got 2 to 3 inches more in length.
NO TANGLES AT ALL!
Lots of new hair growth.
No more losing handfuls of hair in the shower.
The red in my hair is a lot more noticeable.
My hair "lays down" finally....it used to float all around me and I would have to use heavy oils or gels to weigh it down.

I am loving this!! Others have started pointing out how nice my hair looks now. My boys can't keep their hands out of it, now that it isn't cemented to my head with hairgoo.

The only thing for me is, I like having a nice scent in my hair. So does my husband. So, I'd like to try the essential oil suggestion and see if it works. But I want to ask...does it make your hair oily? And, do you use the essential oil every day - or just on the days you wash/rinse with the baking soda and vinegar?

I've heard of success stories of going without shampoo. I would love to try it, but I get my hair trimmed every three months or so and styled every so often with a flat iron (it's shoulder-length), and highlights done every four or so months. So my problem is when one goes to the stylist, the first thing they do is wash your hair, or in the case of hair color or highlights, they have to wash out the hair dye. Even just for a haircut, it's washed before the hairdresser will touch your hair. So I don't think it would work out for me. I can imagine the shampoo person being horrified if I told her not to use shampoo.

me to OP

stopped using shampoo and soap well over a year ago.

just blast yourself with the hot water in the shower while you scrub your skin and scalp with a brush.

towel off will wipe away the oil ( which is natural) and you are left with a proper PH and clean.

It took a while to win over my wife, but she does it now as well and her skin and hair is gorgeous.

my kids do it now as well----eczema has cleared up.

I would like to try it, I was told by a hair stylist years ago that washing with shampoo too much was not good for your hair, also pillow sheets tear your hair up, get a satin one.

Anyway, I live in a large city and am around exhaust fumes, etc. all day. I am not sure water would be enough to get all of that out of my hair???? Any suggestions?

Sure, use hotter water.

I live in one of the filthiest countries on the planet, including exhaust fumes and other air pollutants (no EPA here!). I found that using a hotter temperature water gets all of that out.

Re: I haven't used shampoo in over a year, my hair has never felt/looked healthier, girls touch it all the time, it does exactly what I want it to.
I have a question about this. I stopped using shampoo, because of this thread. I stopped back in July. I have been scrubbing the hell out of my hair in the shower and have been using baking soda to wash it after workouts or when needed. Usually 3-4 times a week. I then rinse with apple cider vinegar mixed with water and then rinse my hair very thoroughly. My hair feels better than ever. It looks better than ever. Its great.

BUT...

I have been having a major problem with smelling TERRIBLE while I sleep. I create this absolutely horrid odor while sleeping. Only while sleeping too. I smell just fine all day and I have now been showering before and after going to sleep and I have been washing my sheets and pillows and pillow covers almost every other day. Its impressively pungent. I have been embarassed to even have a female in my bed with me since this started. (2-3 weeks ago)
The one woman that did spend the night woke up and asked me if I was ok. She thought I was dying because she could hardly breathe after being in bed with me for only 3 hours.

I wake up all the time now and throw my pillow on the ground. I cover my pillow covers with shirts and stuff to try to keep the smell from my pillows. Its awful.

Has anyone else experienced this while switching from shampoo to baking soda and vinegar? Or is it something else entirely?

I really need to solve this problem soon before I get killed by the gases escaping my body.

Sounds like fungus which people can still have even using shampoo. Rub a couple drops of tea tree oil on the scalp after washing it and that might help clear it up.

How long does it take before my hair stops looking greasy?
I am on day 3.
Last night I used baking soda and followed with an ACV rinse. I used too much ACV so I smelled like a salad.
I am going to put ACV and water in a spray bottle.
I am going to mix the baking soda with water and put it in a small dish soap bottle.
I was shocked how soft and tangle free my hair was.
I have long wavy/fuzzy hair it's fine but thick.
It's not fuzzy at all but I wonder if that's because its greasy?
 Quoting: seasidedaisy

I would wait a week... I'm at four weeks. Each week it gets better. I worried about the greasy look too. It looks so thick and natural now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1267770

Maybe somebody can help me here. My hair is a bit greasy, and I don't have apple cider vinegar or baking soda, and even if I did, I eat it, not put it in my hair. It looks like my hair is "dirty" and I should use some soap... Dr Bronners, of course. Also I wash my hair only in cold/cold-warm water.
