you just got me thinking. I have tried the no shampoo thing several times without success because my hair gets very oily/waxy and no amount of scrubbing/combing/brushing/rinsing works. And yes I've left it unshampood for months.

in the olden days they used to use mares urine as a permanent wave solution, so maybe washing ones hair with piss might break down the wax?

Just an idea!

Another idea: use a LITTLE soap and shampoo and smell and look like a fucking normal human being!

What society tells us is normal? Like soaking our bodies in chemicals that screw up our systems? Then when those chemicals cause thyroid disorders or other health conditions then we are not normal because we are fat or we don't have a perfect complexion. I guess normal is a fat person with diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol...right?

These tree-huggers with i-phones and raggedy clothes but wealthy origins make want to vomit. But back to he post...

Has anybody heard of JABON DE TIERRA, JABON DE LA TIERRA (earths soap) its commonly used in south america. made with natural minerals and animal fat... This soap is colored dark, like earth color. It is a soft soap healing properties in skin diseases. Its manufacture is very simple.
You should get vegetable ash, which is that you get from burning vegetable coal or natural wood common. Put in a bowl and dissolve with water. So we will have obtained a liquor rich in potassium and sodium salts (carbonates). For use in the saponification is necessary to strain it to remove all the solids you have.
Then begins to heat the mix and it is adding little by little the pieces of very fresh fat meat (better from cow), until the soap. No need to remove the cracklings but also no need to leave it. Should be stirred slowly with a stick, until the desired mass. Remember that you must boil until the mass start bubble and expend some mist. When cooled, balls or loaves are formed and then packed. In this case, usually are package it in plant leaves.
This soap is preserved from decomposition because it has a high pH.
This soup help to prevent or cure fungus, flakes, acne and lice.

Indians (south americans) have very healthy and beautiful hair... they use this a lot.

Google JABON DE TIERRA, JABON DE LA TIERRA

you would think it smells bad but it doesnt. and you can put some natural essences/fragrances.
sorry for last post translation, was made automatically from a site in spanish.

This should work! but not applying anything at all in our hair? forget it. it'll look greasy and dirty no matter what.

I live in Auburn, Alabama. It's humid as all get out down here, and I have relatively fine (thin) hair.

My hair doesn't smell strongly, it just smells mildly of hair, is very healthy, tons of compliments, and since this winter has been unbelievably mild, I've been able to stay outside and retain the natural red and blonde high lights that occur near my tips.

Don't call folks names, btw.

Rinsing your hair in water is not "washing" your hair. It's wetting your hair.

What about the scalp. If I don't use shampoo my scalp gets super freaking itchy.
 Quoting: Mojofabulous

Baking soda and water - massage it into the scalp - rinse

then seal the cuticle with apple cider vinegar and water - rinse with cold water
 Quoting: Da Purple Chicken

I'm going to try this. In the summer, I let my hair air dry, but in the winter, I tend to at least partially dry it with a hairdryer - always frizzy and brittle. Luckily it hasn't been too cold this winter and I'm still mostly air drying it. Using a hair dryer makes my scalp itch something fierce.

I quit using shampoo for a few months, then used it one time... grrrr!
My scalp got all itchy and flakey and it took several weeks to get back to 'normal'.

The replies to this thread are funny!

If you rinse your hair good, daily, you won't end up looking or smelling like Johnny Depp (who is not only anti shampoo/soap but anti shower as well!)
You don't even "need" body soap if you shower daily.

If needed between showers, baking soda can be used as an underarm deoderant, cheap, very effective and easy!

I've been loosing hair a few years ago. I couldn't understand why, since hair lose is not in our family gene. I realize it might be the shampoo. After some research, I decided to go natural. I mix hemp oil, sea salt, lemon juice, and kiwi and let it lather on my face and scalp. Within the last few months, I noticed a huge improvement in look and texture of my hair. My face is also much smoother.

I heard purplechick say she uses henna. Anyone know if henna covers gray hair. Anyone know where u can get henna these days. I would love to try this, but am wondering if I will be able to make it through the 30 day weird trial period.

Actually I talked to a hairstylist who told me to get my babies off of the baby shampoo as quickly as possible because the ph of the shampoo isn't the correct ph for our scalp. She even asked what I was using for shampoo because even some adult shampoos have the same problem.
I posted a link in this thread where you can type in the types of shampoo, deodorant, etc. that you use and it can tell the chemicals that are in the brands and the negative effects of them. I would suggest at least the baking soda and vinegar for your daughter, I actually use it on my children (ages 2 and 4).
I haven't tried it but I've read where a lot of our body odor is based on what we eat and if we are eating healthy and our body is functioning properly that we really don't need to add all of these chemicals.

It's apparently a big secret-- just stop putting sodium lauryl sulfate in your fucking hair. It's making you go bald fellas. It's giving you split ends and frizz, gentlewomen.

Your hair won't stink; in fact, you will smell more of your body's pheromones; the compounds that tell the opposite sex, "Hey. You there, with the cute face. Be attracted to me."

You are not only paying for your scalp's demise, you're actively applying the poisons that do it to you.
Quit that.

Jesus.

You know, that is extremely funny you posted this, extremely!

anecdotal, I have skin cancer on my upper chest; I have not taken a shower in fluroidated chemical water for about over 4 months. I will wash in spring water, but since that is expensive, and hard, to tote, and even more hard to tote river water to my house, (last time I actually had a proper whole body at once was at the river, actually, risking the runnoff chems as less harmful than the sodium fluoride shower water which hurts my skin cancer, but the river does not)

so, to make a long, slightly possibly emarrassing story to the point, - you are right, I agree since, I was afraid not washing my hair would make it stink, etc. but actually, after going thru the transition period, and worrying aside, it is amazing: the result is:

Hair more beautiful, actually. Yes. Actually.

!!!

AND, ...this is even stranger, to me:

Guys are coming on to me even more, since I gave up my showers.

and I know its not the pheromones alone; it is the looks I am getting from too far away (these are not suprised, aghast looks, to be clear) they are admiring looks, likie they are spying an unusual and pleasant sight. and they keep on eyes fixed on mine, and I feel slightly embarrassed, as my hair is au naturel, kind of feminine Rastafarian locks look, yet, combed, and done, - but then, I look in my car mirror to be sure I don't look strange, and by surprise, I am extra-beautiful! No KIDDING, REALLY!

Try it. At the very least, you will get less poisoning and your body will not stink just do the taps.

Taps: you know, Tits, armpits, pussy..
you can do the INdian maiden look very easily, just comb, twist, and pin; guys will think they are looking at another species, and like it. It takes some getting used to, but it is remarkable how the PTB is harming us by our bathing water and yes, you mentioned this, also thru our daily chemical potions like shampoo, try it and see the proof. Who knows what else they are putting in there.

Fascinating thread. I am going to try this no poo thing.

Curious though, I have pretty thin, but long hair, that tends to not get as long as I would like because it breaks at a certain point. I wondered if anyone has ever heard of someone's hair becoming thicker and or longer when they stopped shampooing.

I am going to start not shampooing today and do the baking soda vinegar rinse when needed.

Thanks!

Re: I haven't used shampoo in over a year, my hair has never felt/looked healthier, girls touch it all the time, it does exactly what I want it to.
Read this a couple days ago and tried it. My New Year's resolution was to cut out plastic as much as possible so instead of putting the baking soda in a plastic container in the shower, I put it in an empty glass spice jar with a shaker top. Before stepping into the shower, shook some into my hand, added water to make a paste and rubbed on top of head and around hairline. WOW it felt all fizzy and effervescent like I had just poured Alka-Seltzer on my head. Felt very good and healthy.

Continued the scrub in the shower. Didn't use the vinegar cuz I hate the smell. It's been super dry here so I ran a tiny bit of coconut oil on the ends (long hair) and could not beleive how soft, shiny, and flowing my hair looks. The coconut oil kept it from being static-y and flyaway in the dry wind. My baby-fine straight hair seems to have more body and it's only been 2 days!

Extra: My mom grew up in the depression and said everyone used baking soda and cornstarch mixed 50:50 instead of deodorant. The cornstarch absorbs moisture and the baking soda keeps your pH alkaline -- bacteria is what causes BO and can't live in an alkaline environment.

Answer me this: What is normal?
What society tells us is normal? Like soaking our bodies in chemicals that screw up our systems? Then when those chemicals cause thyroid disorders or other health conditions then we are not normal because we are fat or we don't have a perfect complexion. I guess normal is a fat person with diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol...right?

Dont bathe and wash your head with mare piss. i guess thats normal for you attention starved pseudo-hippie hipsters. Personal hygiene doesnt have anything to do with obesity or disease, shithead (literally)banana2

What are you, 13? Instead of being a sheeple you should do the research yourself. Taking a reading/comprehension class might not be too bad of an idea either.

The very poster of the mare urine thing said it was a joke, but i guess i touched a nerve in there. i might be 13 and need reading classes, but you need to take the tree out of your "hippie" ass and take it easy.

Read the ingredients on your shampoo bottle. Know what UREA is?

"Urea serves an important role in the metabolism of nitrogen-containing compounds by animals and is the main nitrogen-containing substance in the urine of mammals."

..."Other commercial uses:

-A flavor-enhancing additive for cigarettes
-A main ingredient in hair removers such as Nair and Veet
-A browning agent in factory-produced pretzels
-An ingredient in some skin cream, moisturizers, hair conditioners"
