I read somewhere that it takes 12 weeks for new hair to grow. Is this true? If so, it's going to be a long wait to see if the no poo works.

I was wondering where the odor of dirty feet and soured paper towels was coming from...

Do you think it works the same way for your face? I used to not wash my face for two weeks. No creams no nothing. And my face never been so clear. With all the natural blush.

I have noticed the greasy, unwashed street bum look is quite popular with the kids today. I don't quite get it myself. I never thought looking like I ate out of dumpsters would probably be a good thing.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10145053

It's not greasy and unwashed you tard!

Just no chemicals and no shampoo.

I use baking soda and water for wash and then vinegar and water for condition, once a week. Plain water scrub and rinse in between.
 Quoting: Da Purple Chicken

I've been doing this for a couple of months, and it's amazing, your hair feels very different as you stand under the shower spray. Like it just had a hot oil treatment.

I am using the same routine for body wash, just as you described above, and now my skin has the same feeling. Not stripped of oils. I'm cutting wayyyy down on body lotions now. Don't need them as much.

You might want to buy an organic apple cider vinegar and an aluminum free baking soda. Both are more expensive, but your skin is soaking up whatever you put on it.

I saw in a tv news health spot that dandruff is a fungus of the scalp.

A doctor once told me that fungus and yeast that grow in the body (like a yeast infection) like the body pH. So, both the baking soda and the vinegar will kill the fungus.

I do not have any dandruff since washing with baking soda and rinsing with vinegar. It did NOT work for me to wash with just water, maybe that was the "adjustment period".

Okay, so I haven't washed with shampoo since this thread started several days ago. I did a ton of research online and this just makes so much sense to me now.

Several years ago I heard about the no poo method and kind of laughed it off and thought it sounded gross. Don't know why, but something clicked. It seems asinine to put all those chemicals on your hair and scalp everyday. Totally idiotic to me now.

Here's what I have noticed since I stopped shampooing. First of all, I have done the baking soda and apple cider vinegar rinse twice. And the rest of the time I am just rinsing it out with water. My hair is SO MUCH SOFTER AND FULLER. Hard to believe. Yes, the roots are greasier than normal, but nothing I cannot handle until it regulates itself. The soda and vinegar rinse gets rid of the oiliness very well.

Also, I have medium long hair and when I let it air dry and then twist it up into a bun and let it out after a few hours I have tons more curls. My hair is straight, but it is holding the curls from the bun so much better. Feels like the hair can hold its shape so much better. Also, someone hear mentioned that when wet it feels like you just had a hot oil treatment. YES, exactly. It is a totally different texture. Feels awesome.

I am pretty amazed. Wish I had tried this sooner and not been so close-minded and paranoid. I have already sent this thread to 3 friends and they are trying it too.

Thanks OP!

Has anyone with straight hair that tried the "no poo" thing found that it made their hair wavy or curly?

I am very curious about that. Thanks!

I have used shampoo and some have just weighed my hair down. The next day I would just wash with water and I would have waves and curls. But washing with water everyday wasn't for me. So I tried the baking soda and vinegar and that works great. I just don't use it everyday. I am trying for just once or twice a week and the rest of the time I just wash with water or put on a shower cap.

I dissolve two teaspoons of baking soda in warm warm water in a large plastic cup and take that into the shower with me. I just pour a little at a time and work it into my scalp. Then of course rinse it out and use vinegar. I have a spray bottle in the shower with vinegar in that I spray on my hair and work it in then rinse, rinse, rinse. I am not missing shampoo at all. Baking soda also makes a great skin scrub.

You could just go longer and longer between washing with baking soda/vinegar. I started out every other day and now am every 2-3 days and am going longer with just water now. For me I just couldn't go through a real ugly period and had to take it slower and it is working.

No problem. It is just great to find something other than shampoo. It just feels weird now if I go back to shampoo now. I suppose if I had to use shampoo I would dilute it A LOT and always use vinegar as a rinse. I use white vinegar BTW. Some people use apple cider but just find what works for you.

And I didn't mean to say "warm warm" water.LOL Just didn't recheck what I was writing. But do dissolve the baking soda real well. Even if you have to start with hot water and add cool water into it. Then it won't clump up on your head.

Yup, no smell here either.

I do have a nice scented light hand cream that I will use on my hair if I want to tame any fly aways. Winter can be a hassle no matter what you are washing your hair with. Just take a little bit of lotion and rub it into your hands so there isn't too much of it left and smooth your hair with it. It works great. And it is not so oily that it causes any problems for people with fine hair. Most only need it on the ends of their hair and not the scalp. Many people like shampoo because of the way it smells but if you use a scented cream that will take the place of the smell you miss from the shampoo. If you don't have a problem with fly aways you can always spritz your hair with some perfume or take a bit of essential oil and use that.

Nice idea with the hand cream. I will try that. One of the Youtube videos posted had a girl that mentioned that she added a couple of drops of essential oil to her vinegar rinse. I thought that was a cool idea since there are so many different fragrances to choose from.

Yep - I went "no poo" a little over a month ago - amazing!!!!

I am totally in love with my hair now.

And, a nice bonus - after my daughter's accident several years ago, my hair started thinning due to stress. Luckily, because I have super curly hair, no one noticed but me. Now that I've quit using chemicals on my scalp and hair, it's growing back! I have a quarter inch of new growth AND it's coming back in my natural hair color and not gray.

Just tried conditioning with ACV, BRILLIANT. Hair feels amazing.

I'm going to buy some baking soda to initially wash.

Just one question: What are people using, if anything, to give their hair a fresh smell? Someone said coconut oil?

Coconut oil will just make your hair greasy and hard to clean if you are doing no shampoo. You might need to use shampoo to get it out.

Instead try putting a drop of essential oil into the vinegar/water rinse OR you can put a few drops of essential oil in a spray bottle with water in it it and spray all over your hair. Lots of scents to choose from.

I'm confused, I thought baking soda was to replace traditional shampoo? So you are cleaning your hair just not with chemicals that are bad for your scalp

Not necessarily true - depends on your hair. Mine tends toward the dry side so it literally 'drinks' the coconut oil. No problems at all in washing with baking soda.
