And you live in Greenland where it is cold, I know if you tend to have oily skin and live in Florida, you'll smell awful in no time. Maybe if you are using something else to reduce the oil it will fly.
 Quoting: bigrex

I have oily skin and live in Louisiana. I use baking soda and apple cider vinegar and it has actually helped with the oily skin.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7879694

Apple cider is smelly stuff, do you smell of it afterward? Do you use something to cut the smell?
 Quoting: bigrex

It is smelly but once my hair dries, I don't notice it. My husband speaks his mind and he hasn't mentioned it smelling either.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7879694

For the conditioner, I use a mix of 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp. honey and a few drops of whatever essential oil I feel like for better smell. Mix that with about 2 cups of warm water from the shower and dump over your head.

You should try that if you're afraid to smell like vinegar.

Fascinating thread. I am going to try this no poo thing.

Curious though, I have pretty thin, but long hair, that tends to not get as long as I would like because it breaks at a certain point. I wondered if anyone has ever heard of someone's hair becoming thicker and or longer when they stopped shampooing.

I am going to start not shampooing today and do the baking soda vinegar rinse when needed.

Thanks!

One thing I noticed when I started going no-poo and used baking soda and vinegar is that my hair largely stopped falling out. Whenever I washed my hair with shampoo and conditioner, I used to fish a clump of hair out of the shower drain afterwards. Now it's maybe a few hairs, but not anything like I've had before.

Read this a couple days ago and tried it. My New Year's resolution was to cut out plastic as much as possible so instead of putting the baking soda in a plastic container in the shower, I put it in an empty glass spice jar with a shaker top. Before stepping into the shower, shook some into my hand, added water to make a paste and rubbed on top of head and around hairline. WOW it felt all fizzy and effervescent like I had just poured Alka-Seltzer on my head. Felt very good and healthy.

Continued the scrub in the shower. Didn't use the vinegar cuz I hate the smell. It's been super dry here so I ran a tiny bit of coconut oil on the ends (long hair) and could not beleive how soft, shiny, and flowing my hair looks. The coconut oil kept it from being static-y and flyaway in the dry wind. My baby-fine straight hair seems to have more body and it's only been 2 days!

Extra: My mom grew up in the depression and said everyone used baking soda and cornstarch mixed 50:50 instead of deodorant. The cornstarch absorbs moisture and the baking soda keeps your pH alkaline -- bacteria is what causes BO and can't live in an alkaline environment.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4392226

I'm doing the baking soda/cornstarch mix now for deodorant. For the last five years or so, I used to use Tom's all-natural deodorant, but my armpits would still get moist and stink after half a day or so. The baking soda/cornstarch deodorant keeps me going for 24 hours with no smell at all... it's nearly miraculous.

Wrong. ALL baking soda is aluminum-free; only baking POWDER can have aluminum. So you can buy the 99-cent stuff from the grocery store for baking soda, no problem. I used to use organic apple cider vinegar for the hair rinse, but don't anymore because it has the "mother" in it, and sometimes you get chunks of that in your mix... not so nice. Now I buy the cheap stuff from the grocery store for my hair as well (for food I still use the good, more expensive ACV).

Having a few days of the greasy (ier) change over days in between the b.soda and vinegar. but when using that it is great! Also tryong to just give it time and not wash it every single day help it to get itself regulated. I can say that there is usually this funky build up on my scalp (kinda greasy stuff if I itch, but no longer there!

I am still finding this absolutely brilliant. My hair shines more than I have seen it shine in years of using chemicals. My scalp rarely itches, overall, I would not go back to using chemicals.

I am going to try the baking soda/cornflour deodorant as well... Will let you know how that works out. I get exczema from deodorants, so this will be either really good or a totaly bomb.

yeah I have noticed how much thicker my hair is as well.

Even my very critical 18 year old was looking at my hair yesterday and she said " Mum, you are getting some very cool curls in your hair and amazing highlights since you have been doing the no shampoo thing". Coming from her, that was an very revealing statement

I agree, same here, started a few months ago. I still do deep condition the ends and use jojoba oil to moisturize it after I shower. Amazing how fast it dries now, too. The only down side is that when I need to color it, it messes up my scalp again and I have to start over.
 Quoting: SaintIn

I stopped coloring my hair a little over a year ago. I was so sick of it; those gray roots coming through all the time, etc., so I decided I would stop faking it and just go gray.

I tried that once before but didn't go through with it; this time I got inspired by one of the mom's in my son's school who has nearly white hair but a very young face and is absolutely great looking. I thought, if she can do it, I can do it, and stuck with it this time. Now I really enjoy my gray streaks -- it actually looks kind of elegant -- and would not go back.

I also went no-poo ca. three months ago and like it that way, although my (chin-length) hair does look greasy if I don't do the baking soda/vinegar concoction for more than four or five days. I'm wondering if I should leave even that out and go without anything for a while to normalize my scalp and hair.
 Quoting: sylvie

Just wash with the baking soda every five days and then eventually go for six days and so on. I just wash with water in between soda washes. Sometimes when I don't want to wet my hair I spritz it with water to bring the curls/waves back and to style it.

How long does it take before my hair stops looking greasy?
I am on day 3.
Last night I used baking soda and followed with an ACV rinse. I used too much ACV so I smelled like a salad.
I am going to put ACV and water in a spray bottle.
I am going to mix the baking soda with water and put it in a small dish soap bottle.
I was shocked how soft and tangle free my hair was.
I have long wavy/fuzzy hair it's fine but thick.
It's not fuzzy at all but I wonder if that's because its greasy?

Tip for blondes: The apple cider vinegar was making my baby-fine blonde hair look dark, plus I hate the smell. Brewed some chamomile tea and used that as a rinse instead. Brings out golden highlights, smells way better!

If you have a Mexican food section in your grocery store find the spice section and buy a bag of little flowers called "manzanilla," those are chamomile flowers. They're 99 cents here as opposed to a box of 25 chamomile teabags for $5.99.

It's been nearly a month now, am not losing any hair at all, used to be plucking it out of the hairbrush constantly. In fact, don't even need a hairbrush now, just a comb, and my hair is long! There are some "yuck" days still, but those just become ponytail days.

I've been doing the baking soda and vinegar since 1/10/2012 now. I love my hair! Just last week I started noticing that my hair has some body to it now. My hair is so thick and long and brushes right out, but it's there. I bring it back by spritzing with water and scrunching my hair with my hands.

Re: I haven't used shampoo in over a year, my hair has never felt/looked healthier, girls touch it all the time, it does exactly what I want it to.
I'd like to post an update since I have not been using shampoo since this thread started and I love it. My hair has been so much fuller and softer and even waves a bit, which is great because my hair is normally very flat and straight.

Well a couple of nights ago I decided to use a oil treatment and I put some sunflower oil I had on the ends and middle of my hair. Since I am not washing with normal shampoo I wasn't able to get all the oil out and it started to look pretty dirty.

So this morning I opted to use an old sulfate free shampoo to get the oil out. Wasn't really wanting to do this since it has looked so good until I did the oil treatment. But it was dirty, so I decided it needed a good washing. My sulfate free shampoo has other crappy chemicals in it.

After I washed it, I noticed it got it clean and got the oil out, but when it dried my hair was flat, thin and lifeless. Nothing like what not shampooing does. So all my life shampoo has been making my hair look like crap and I never knew it. I even needed hairspray this morning which I haven't needed at all when not using shampoo.

So I will go back to not shampooing. Clearly it is a scam to get us to spend money. It is worthless. Baking soda and vinegar works just fine for me.

Been doing this for a week now and wow am liking the results already. Someone suggested doing the baking soda and vinegar once a week so i didnt wash for one week and then used the baking soda and apple cider vinegar today. My hair looks great. Im not using shampoo any longer. I have long hair down to my rear end and i dont want to go bald from these chemicals in the shampoo so thanks for starting this thread as i never heard of this.

I still continue to use this formula every other day in spite of. I think that it is cleansing my scalp from whatever unhealthy stuff was there. Also my scalp doesn't itch as much now, and my hair is a little smoother. Still have "wild hair," but it's somewhat more tame.

It's apparently a big secret-- just stop putting sodium lauryl sulfate in your fucking hair. It's making you go bald fellas. It's giving you split ends and frizz, gentlewomen.

Your hair won't stink; in fact, you will smell more of your body's pheromones; the compounds that tell the opposite sex, "Hey. You there, with the cute face. Be attracted to me."

You are not only paying for your scalp's demise, you're actively applying the poisons that do it to you.
Quit that.

Jesus.

(Disclaimer-- Alot of retardedly expensive "organic" shampoos lack this compound, and aren't bad for your hair. They just strip your hair of all the natural, necessary oils your body produces specifically to nourish your follicles, and then (if you condition as well) puts back the wrong sort of oil to do the same job. Herp.

When I was a child we only had about three different brands of shampoo to choose from and you only used that once a week. It was not until the 70's did people start thinking they had to wash their hair everyday.
