I've heard of success stories of going without shampoo. I would love to try it, but I get my hair trimmed every three months or so and styled every so often with a flat iron (it's shoulder-length), and highlights done every four or so months. So my problem is when one goes to the stylist, the first thing they do is wash your hair, or in the case of hair color or highlights, they have to wash out the hair dye. Even just for a haircut, it's washed before the hairdresser will touch your hair. So I don't think it would work out for me. I can imagine the shampoo person being horrified if I told her not to use shampoo.

Re: I haven't used shampoo in over a year, my hair has never felt/looked healthier, girls touch it all the time, it does exactly what I want it to.
Yup, another one on the shampoo-free train. I'm a guy, so perhaps I have it easier.. I have medium-length curly hair and for about 4 years now I haven't used shampoo or conditioner. Like OP said, I wash every day, and maybe every three or four days I'll gently wash my hair with some Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap. Keeps it nice and silky smooth, and yeah, I dunno what's up with other people, but my hair most definitely does not smell bad without shampoo. I get compliments all the time on my hair, and when I actually do go to a hairdresser to get my hair cut, they're always aghast that I don't use Paul Mitchels or some other designer crap in my lustrous hair.

In my honest opinion, I do think that some people probably do better with shampoo - those with exceptionally greasy/oily hair - but it's still probably just a very temporary fix. Shampoo is just another one of those stupid fashion trends that quietly suck up millions of dollars from hordes of consumers... Nothing wrong with a quart of Dr. B's, which'll last about 9 or 10 months if used as both hair and body wash, but most folks would rather spend money on these chemically enhanced, laboratory formulated, non-grease, moisturizing, texturing, straightening, anti-frizz, highlight-protecting shampoos and conditioners, and pay like 5 bucks a bottle for some Dove or Axe or other constantly-advertised must-have body wash that lasts like a month and has words like "ultimate, maximum, all new, amazing!" printed on the label.

Rant partly over.

While exploring the internet with a particularly expanded mind one evening, I came across the following quote, a Yahoo Answers post if you google "fashion is evil":

"...all of these different designers, etc, make for a very superficial country, where you're judged by what you wear, and what you wear shows how much money you have, and people equate money with value of a human being"

THAT is one of the tremendous shortcomings of our society... and that kind of material flaunting shows up at every level of society, and often especially, the extremes. Who on God's green earth needs multiple jets, let alone a watch that costs tens of thousands of dollars?! Unless that watch comes with a spaceship that it also drives, it's purely for show. Or how about the folks in the inner city who spend their life savings on a lexus suv, and just leave it parked out front, shining up the rims every weekend because they can't even afford auto insurance to drive... (I'm in a pretty poor part of town in the hood right now, so I see it every day, and it frustrates me to no end).

It's not that all urban poor people are stupid or that rich people are just assholes (though certainly, individuals may fall directly into those categories). It's the same reason crowds will riot and kill one another just to get the newest pair of Air Jordans or Nikes at a footlocker or walmart, or why desperate housewife caricatures will drop obscene sums of money for the latest purse on 5th ave. It's because we're often willing to sacrifice like mad and even fight to retain our all-important image. And not without reason. Like the poster quoted above said,

"people equate money with the value of a human being".

That's what we live and breathe in our culture, and it's what the whole media complex thrives upon... it's not straight up materialism, nor is it avarice or pride, but simply fear of what others think, and hence how much or how little they value us. We're so stuck on what people think of us, and how much value we'll have in their eyes that our consumer habits support entire industries and microeconomies that thrive off of our insecurities.

So if your hair permits it, ditch the shampoo, and you'll be alright. Pass up the next sale, because you don't need it (again, sites like fatwallet, slickdeals, woot, 1sale.. etc... only exist to make you buy s--- you don't need, not to somehow magically you with an unbelievable deal to save fistfuls of money). Throw on a pair of jeans and an old shirt - keep clothes till they rip or lose their integrity - and as long as you care for your body, you'll look just fine. Apart from a passing judgment (and if they're judging you, screw em anyways), nobody really cares how cool you look - you're pretty much the only person who's concerned with that.

Rant over.

Speaking-of "poo" in hair- I've heard somewhere that the way to create dreadlocks involves adding "dung"-(poop), to one's hair.
So I'm assuming that they mean manure, like-in cow, or pig?
Does anyone know anything about it?

It's been 6 weeks since I've used shampoo. I am amazed how good my hair looks.
At first I thought this was crazy but tried it anyway.
I was wrong, I've been getting many compliments.

I started making my own deoderant .... baking soda, corn starch and coconut oil, it works great.

I used to spend $50-100 a month on beauty products, now it's less than $10.
I only use baking soda, vinegar, corn starch and coconut oil.

Thanks for starting this thread.

I'm starting today. My dad is 80 years old and rarely has used shampoo and has wonderful bright hair and A LOT. I'll try not to use even soap.

As a matter of fact I'm doing other natural things. My teeth are whiter than ever mixing CHARCOAL plus dental paste, bicarbonate and lemon juice:

I discovered black people who didn't have enough money in their youth used coal ashes to clean their teeth and they are like pearls! And is working with me! Another thing is mush a strawberry and add baking soda and with the mix leave in your teeth 15 minutes and then wash it with water and salt.

At the gym I have lost 15 cm of BELLY FAT in merely 2 months and a half with aerobics and pumping iron. Even the eye bags and wrinkles are dissapearing and I had to buy new clothes to my new body. Fantastic.

BTW, you can't overdo these methods to make your teeth whiter because there's a thin layer protecting our teeth. Just do it once a week or every two weeks. Grandma also used that and had all her teeth til her 90's.

I tried the "no Poo" for nearly three months , I then tried the bi-carb and vinegar method...none of it worked.

I think its because I have very very oily hair.

The Bi-Carb worked well, cept it irritated my scalp and the vinegar made it feel dirty.

Have really only decided this week to go back to the poo.

Re: I haven't used shampoo in over a year, my hair has never felt/looked healthier, girls touch it all the time, it does exactly what I want it to.
I have fine, stick-straight, shoulder-length hair that tends to be very oily. I quit using shampoo two years ago. I wash it every day (sometimes every other day, during the winter) with just baking soda, and that does the job perfectly.

The last time I used shampoo was about a year and a half ago, in a hotel, when I realized I'd forgotten to pack baking soda. My hair was so greasy and disgusting by the end of the day I stopped at a drugstore so I could buy baking soda to wash my yucky hair before going out to dinner! Even then, it took two or three days for the greasiness to stop being a problem--whatever crap was in the shampoo took that long to wash out again. So no more shampoo, ever.

Not only does baking soda do a great job of cleaning my hair, but it's improved the condition of my scalp, too. I have no more dandruff, plus I actually have new hair growing in at my hairline (just above the temples) that I didn't have before. I've always had a wide forehead, and the new hair growth has noticeably softened the appearance of it, to the point where my mom commented on it last month.

The other odd benefit is that my hair no longer tangles. I used to spend ages carefully combing out knots every morning and evening, especially at the nape of my neck, where my hair brushes against my shirt collar. I'd also get long, ratty-looking tangles every night as I slept (that probably would have turned into dreads if I'd let them). I can now pick up a comb at any time and run it straight through my hair without hitting a single snarl, and I can't remember the last time I had to pick my way through one.

I have been using the baking soda wash and vinegar rinse since this thread started.

I absolutely love what it has done for my hair. It shines, is softer, and has so much more body then it has in years.

I would never go back to using chemicals on my hair.

My daughter was braiding my hair for me a couple of days ago and she commented on how soft my hair is now, compared to the shampoo days.

Yep.. Love it!

Re: I haven't used shampoo in over a year, my hair has never felt/looked healthier, girls touch it all the time, it does exactly what I want it to.
I've started this too, ever since I came across this thread.....

My hair is mid-back length and very course, VERY thick and wavy/curly.....ALWAYS had the whole "Rosanne Rosannna Danna" thing going. And in the humidity - forget looking like a human. Also - I've been trying to grow it out for years and it won't grow longer than mid-back.

I do the baking soda and apple cider vinegar thing once a week and have had NO problem with oiliness. I use water only on the other days.

Here are the changes that have happened:

My hair is growing finally. I've got 2 to 3 inches more in length.
NO TANGLES AT ALL!
Lots of new hair growth.
No more losing handfuls of hair in the shower.
The red in my hair is a lot more noticeable.
My hair "lays down" finally....it used to float all around me and I would have to use heavy oils or gels to weigh it down.

I am loving this!! Others have started pointing out how nice my hair looks now. My boys can't keep their hands out of it, now that it isn't cemented to my head with hairgoo.

The only thing for me is, I like having a nice scent in my hair. So does my husband. So, I'd like to try the essential oil suggestion and see if it works. But I want to ask...does it make your hair oily? And, do you use the essential oil every day - or just on the days you wash/rinse with the baking soda and vinegar?

I went for a year without shampooing my hair, it just ended up looking really gross, especially after we came back from the beach and trying to rinse it out water didnt help. I was trying the self cleaning hair thing. Now I partly self clean my hair, I just water wash it on the days I dont shampoo. Maybe the trick is to just use shampoo less of the time.

I've gone "no poo" for a few months and I like the results. It has slowed down my rate of falling hair as well (but not stopped it completely). However, I do clean it occasionally using the dried leaves of the Arab species of Buckthorn mixed with rehydrated food grade Tragacanth gum (old recipe for hair growth in the region). You're supposed to leave it on your hair for a few hours, but I use it just like shampoo (the gum makes it have the consistency of Jelly). Then wash it with water mixed with a tea spoon or two of lemon juice, then wash it again with water. and Voila - very clean hair.

The trick is to substitute shampoo with something natural you fucking idiot. The 'no poo' thing is about not using alcohol to wash your hair and something else like baking soda, with cider vinegar and coconut oil to condition.

Might as well as it really works. I do the baking soda and ACV everyday and my hair has never looked fuller or beautiful in general. I use a large salt shaker and fill it abour 8/10 of baking soda. Then i mix a little water just to make a paste then i lather and scrub. I rinse with hot water, then i spray the apple cider all over (regular dollar store spray bottle ACV mixed with a little water) moderately and rub that through thoroughly. Then rinse with mild cold water. Works everytime. Even if you are a greasy wop like me it will do the trick and it will save you money and your hair.
