I've always had this feeling there is something wrong with shampoo having wide spectrum of chemicals. Now it indeed seems that they add all that nasty stuff to force body to produce extra hair grease/make head itch... to force you into using more and more of the shampoo.... And people have lived for millenias without all that crap... Metropia ( [link to www.imdb.com] ) might not be only pure fantasy after all. The Wrath is going to be Endless |

AbyssLady, thanks for bringing this thread back up. Most people are unaware of cleansing with baking soda/cocoanut oil/water & conditioning with vinegar/honey/water mixtures. About 40-years ago this was suggested by my hair stylist. Yes, a hair stylist. She said it would reduce the tangles, knots and resulting split ends. Another benefit was fewer salon trips to have damaged ends trimmed. She also explained it's the skin of the scalp that develops the odor, crust, flakes. Not the hair itself. The scalp needs to be massaged & stimulated for proper blood circulation and distribution of natural oils. I keep my hair around elbow length. It's medium-fine strands, thick, and textured. Also 75-percent white, 25-percent brunette that pulls auburn. Someone asked about having a shampoo at the stylists. I tell any stylist or shampoo "girl" I washed it that morning & please just rinse it with warm water. Never have had anyone argue or insist on shampooing/conditioning. Been to too many stylists to count all over the world, too. Another goodie is Aloe Vera Gel. It makes a great styling aide. Mixed with cocoanut oil, it makes a moisturising treatment. Mixed with cocoanut oil, powdered milk, it makes a protein treatment. Anyone want to share other care tips? Who knows, if it's TEOTWAWKI we may all benefit from learning of alternative personal care. Although her hair looked amazing and she had no scalp issues, her hair was dirty as hell. She didnt notice that until she tried to straighten it and how dirty the blow dryer and flat iron got. She tried no washing only rinsing for a few months. You admit hair is naturally oily, well the dirt will not get out of the oil unless you use soap. Maybe its different because she is blexican and had long hair, but I would recommend a good, safe shampoo at least a few times a month. also avoid parabens, they contribute to estrogen dominance/imbalances. |

Just read this whole thread - didn't know it existed! My hair has always been limp and feels greasy and dirty within an hour or so of it air drying (I never use a hair dryer). I'm mostly grey/white at age 40. My paternal grandmother has a full head of white hair by age 19, so it's a genetic thing. I don't care about the hair color - I quite like it. So - I'm going to try this baking soda/vinegar alternative and see how that goes. I just called Mom and told her about all this. She asked if and how does the baking soda and apple cider vinegar affect permed hair. Does it strip out the perming solution in any way? |

Buy a WOODEN comb -- or several. Not laquered, not painted, not that laminated bamboo -- but just plain WOOD. And some BOAR bristle brushes. You can find both items on ebay. The wood and the boar bristles will soak up excess natural oils from your hair. Then wash the combs and the brushes!!! Wash them throughly in dawn dish detergent and hot water. Work the tines of the combs through the bristles of the brushes. Then air dry in sunlight outdoors!!! I keep a half dozen of each, use them morning and night for a day, then move on to the next set of comb and brush for the next day. Then wash them all out at one time. So easy, so clean, so efficient and natural!!! This is what our ancestresses did for millenia -- only they did not have the luxury of multiple combs and brushes, and dawn detergent to clean them with. Nothing but just plain WATER for hair and scalp. Deep fingertip massage daily, and LOTS of combing + brushing. But it is a pleasure because hair is so smooth, silky, and ZERO tangles! I have tried the no shampoo thing several times without success because my hair gets very oily/waxy and no amount of scrubbing/combing/brushing/rinsing works. Henna is not like regular commercial hair color. It does deeply pigment the hair shaft, but gives a luminous color, not a dye type color. True henna is unique. Not the trendy "henna-type" dyes, which use only a smidgen of actual henna. Pure, real henna is unlike anything else, and is not even to be compared to commerical dyes. For years I used it to take diswater blonde hair to strawberry blonde. Henna is magnificent! Now I am quite happy to be a greying dishwater blonde, more white and grey than blonde, but I am quite at home with it. To each her own!
