Aren't Maroons the remnants of Columbus's crews that stayed behind when he discovered Jamaica? They fled to the mountains to avoid serving on the ships, kind of like Cook's Pitcairn Island settlers in some ways.

Correct. A certain somebody basically can't spell. However, since Columbus's crews the term "maroon" has been extended largely to anyone who is stranded...especially at sea or on a deserted island.
