Migrating Herring Up Hudson River in February Not April
I was at a park on the Hudson River with some family members today. The river was filled with fish. My 84 year old father said that they looked like Herring...but Herring usually does this in April.

I did some research and found this Site that says it happens in April and May:

it's been very warm here in nyc. even plants that don't come out until march have been coming out for me. my rose bush even has a few leaves (granted, it's blocked on all 3 sides w/ wall, so it's warmer than normal.) enjoy the fishing. i guess that means bass season will be sooner than we know it. :)

The Herring Migrate from the Atlantic Ocean into the fresh water Hudson River to spawn - just like Salmon do in their areas - in late Spring. The River was filled with huge streams of fish rapidly swimming upstream. This is HIGHLY unusual in February!!

Correction - I had myself turned around. The fish were swimming DOWN the River - South, toward the Atlantic. This makes it even stranger!!

Why possibly do you think they were swimming the wrong way now? Has there been any discharging of anything into the river?

Do you have a Fish and Wildlife agency in your area or the state to call and find out what explanation they give?

Can you provide an update later? I will monitor this thread.

Did you know about the mancovers blowing about 30 miles north of Albany, in Hudson Falls? I think that was the name of the place.

You may have to Google regarding a fuel leak from a convience store, I think it was a Cumberland Farms.

Thanks for the info OP.

I was on the other side of the River from where I live and was off on the direction.

Yes, I do know about the Mancovers blowing off...I think this may be related.

I contacted the NYSDEC and they are very interested and are sending crews out to investigate.

I have to get out on the Hudson and snag me some Herring so we can go catch some real fish.. Can you say Early "Striper" Season. Usually this time of year the Hudson River is 1/2 way frozen over.. If I had a dry suit I would have gone Jet skiing out there yesterday, it hit almost 60 degrees.
To each is own...

Strange things happens in Norway too:

Throughout the weekend, people in Os near Bergen considered a phenomenon that is rare at this time of year.

Large quantities of wild trout have applied against the trout. The fish seemed stressed and exhausted, and it was also found dead fish on the bottom of the estuary.

After diving into the river, and captured about 100 wild fish, according to researchers at the Uni Environment at the University of Bergen that they have now found the cause:

Sea trout are struggling with salt regulation and seeks to fresh water.
