CDC Issues New Beta2c Coronavirus Guidance

Recombinomics Commentary 21:00
March 7, 2013
The CDC has put out an early release MMWR which updates the current situation for nCoVs. Associated with the MMWR are guidance including a new case definition and travel updates. These updates highlight the concentration of cases in the Middle East and request notification of PUI’s (person under investigation).

The new guidelines highlight symptomatic cases with recent travel to the Arabian Peninsula...

The spokesman said that The patients are being treated in isolation and in stable condition; staff concerned is now on leave.
The spokesman stressed that the virus is not SARS or novel coronavirus (commonly known as "SARS").

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday warned state and local health officials about potential infections from a deadly virus previously unseen in humans that has now sickened 14 people and killed 8.
Most of the infections have occurred in the Middle East, but a new analysis of three confirmed infections in Britain suggests the virus can pass from person to person rather than from animal to humans, the CDC said in its Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report on Thursday.

Your 10 days grace period is over
WHO continues to closely monitor the situation.
That is very nice of them. What is not so nice, is that we have to wait so long to hear about it.
He was hospitalized on 10 February 2013 and died on the 19th. That was over 2 weeks since his death. Same as the last case. Do you see the time lapse we are getting? Your 10 days grace period is over. From now on you get no warning. Nothing. You will just get up and see on tv, that something big is going down.
WHAT? A new disease from Saudi Arabia?
Well, Kiddies, you are now, officially, not getting any warning from the WHO, the Saudi's, or any U.S. gov't officials. There are no warnings, alerts or even travel notices. EVERYBODY continues to closely monitor the situation. Hell, we already knew that too.
You can wait around for one, write about how special it is to be told of a case, or even retweet the same story 47 times..but you are still 2 weeks behind what is really happening.
Channie says don't stigmatize any countries that may have a new disease, to keep the info flowing in..Funny that it comes from the place where more outbreaks are hiddin from people, even more than Cambodia. Keep the info flowing to the WHO, who then sits on it. WHO continues to closely monitor the situation?
The total lack of specifics in these recent reports is amazing. I know more about when the president is going golfing than I know about this threat!
If the WHO is monitoring so closely, then why are they so late to report on it? Why are the Saudi's, who claim to be adhering to IHR, waiting for weeks to report them to the WHO?
Somebody is not being truthful on reporting what is happening there. Do you see any American airports taking special precautions against this new coronavirus, compared to other countries and their statements? Funny that HK and China are saying something about it every day. Denying rumors, closely watching travelers, even giving out H5N1 vaccines to people going to or working in risky bird flu areas.
How can we judge the threat, when we are not told of cases or clusters? The latest death has no travel history, so this nails down Saudi Arabia as the main country of spread..and we don't know yet, the who, what, where he caught it from? Maybe I am being too suspicious of all these gov't agencies and countries. Maybe they will really tell us when it is out of control and spreading through casual contact. Maybe it already is.

WHO does not advise special screening at points of entry with regard to this event nor does it recommend that any travel or trade restrictions be applied.
If this is the case, then why is China doing it?..And since Channie is from China and leader of the WHO, do I think she doesn't know about or control it? Yeah, it sure does remind ME of a case of "de ja vu." Pay no attention the man behind the curtain. Don't stigmatize anybody?..What she meant to say was "Don't YOU stigmatize anybody." Your 10 days grace period is over...

Hi guys.

Good to see you both at it and full on too.

Thanks UK anon for keeping the info low streaming in and also now to Treyfish for all his added information and commentary.

Personally i think that you are absolutely spot on Treyfish with your observation and critique of the situation that the WHO is now adopting.

I have made my own noise about it and I will continue to carry on long and loud about it as there can be no justification for them witholding critical information of this type.

If any sort of outbreak is to remain contained as best as can be, then only the very latest and up to date information will perhaps assist in minimizing such a catastrophy and to stifle this information flow is tantamount to attempting to sponsor and assist with the actual spread of this and any other dangerous human contaigen.

So I will say in the plainest of terms that I can.

JUST WHAT THE HELL DO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION WANT TO ACHIEVE BY DEVOLVING THEIR SERVICE TO HUMANITY BACK AT LEAST THIRTY YEARS.

ARE YOU ATTEMPTING TO DELIBERATELY ASSIST A NEW KILLER FOR HUMANITY TO HAVE TO FACE?

NOW ANSWER THAT!

From your post above Treyfish...

I would have thought in a sensible caring and appropriate world, the concept of stigmatizing anyone when put up against the importance of protection and preservation of human life would completely overshadow out of all thought, any consideration that could or indeed should be afforded to anybodies petty sensitivies.

It would appear that some people at least in my humble opinion might be struggling with their concepts of what reality actually means and there allocation of priorities, and questions of relevance must be must be directed towards these entities who are in positions to make and impose their distorted concepts on matters that can affect other people so significantly.

The saying...

If you cant stand the heat in the kitchen, comes to mind here!

In simple terms for all, are these people the best we can find for the job?

I guess it's all about the oil in SA? The CDC put out a lot of articles today, but they still want to hold a 10 day grace period. We still have no definitive answer as to where they are getting the sickness. What else could it be but goats, camels, bats or people? Plus they are releasing info weeks after infections, so we are in trouble on that aspect.

I think that you are right Treyfish but also, I am conscous of the religous influence too.

While I do not wish to use this thread as to in any way bring the suggestion of anything negative that has a religous direction to it, the simple fact is that when huge numbers of people gather for ANY reason then the opportunities for contaigous infections to affect perchentages of any large group increase dramatically.

I am certain that the Saudi authorities are acutely aware of this fact and I believe that this 10 day grace period could also be related to these considerations in addition to several others.

I believe also that the Saudi people are a gentle and to a degree private people too and that they as a culture probably are simply not totally comfortable with the type of transparent lifestyles that we in the west take more for granted.

And while I absolutely respect any peoples right to run their lives in the manner that they choose, I do have difficulty reconsiling those rights with the rights of the greater for the benefit of the greater majority, especially when individual identities arent being disclosed and general news can and should transmit warnings for all to benefit.

For me at least this 10 day grace arrangement is simply 10 days too many advantage to give to any common enemy, let alone one that there is NO defense against.

In the final analysis we have to choose the cautious approach and attempt to continue to respect our differences as best we can with what we have to work with.

Surely this has to be the most pragmatic standpoint that compromises the least and protects the most.

The CDC has yesterday the 7th of March released a new travel notice in relation to the novel coronavirus originating from the Arabian Peninsular.

While there are no significant changes to actual travel arrangements being implemented, it is still highly advisable for all to read and head this fresh notice.

Novel (New) Coronavirus in the Arabian Peninsula and United Kingdom
This information is current as of today, March 07, 2013 at 16:57 EST

Updated: March 07, 2013

What Is the Current Situation?
From April 2012 to February 2013, a total of 14 people in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and the United Kingdom (UK) were confirmed to have respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus; 13 cases were severe and one case was mild. Eight of these 14 people died.

In the UK, an infected man likely spread the virus to two family members. He had recently traveled to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and got sick before returning to the UK. This cluster of cases provides the first evidence of person-to-person transmission. The UK’s Health Protection Agency is continuing to investigate this. Also, clusters of cases in Saudi Arabia and Jordan are being investigated. For more information, see CDC’s novel coronavirus update.

CDC does not recommend that anyone change their travel plans because of these cases of the novel coronavirus. CDC recommends that US travelers to countries in or near the Arabian Peninsula* monitor their health and see a doctor right away if they develop fever and symptoms of lower respiratory illness, such as cough or shortness of breath. They should tell the doctor about their recent travel.

What Is a Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a cause of the common cold. A coronavirus also was the cause of the severe respiratory illness called SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). SARS caused a global epidemic in 2003, but there have not been any known cases of SARS since 2004. This novel coronavirus is not the same coronavirus that caused SARS.

What Is Known About Novel Coronavirus?
The novel coronavirus is different from any other coronavirus that has been previously found in people. In the UK, the virus likely spread from an infected person to two family members. Symptoms of novel coronavirus infection have included fever, cough, and shortness of breath. CDC is working with WHO and other partners to understand the public health risks from this virus.

How Can Travelers Protect Themselves?
Taking these everyday actions can help prevent the spread of germs and protect against colds, flu, and other illnesses:

•Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
•Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Germs spread this way.
•Avoid close contact with sick people.
•Be sure you are up-to-date with all of your shots, and if possible, see your healthcare provider at least 4–6 weeks before travel to get any additional shots. Visit CDC’s Travelers' Health website for more information on healthy travel.
•If you are sick
◦Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue in the trash.
◦Avoid contact with other people to keep from infecting them.
When Should Someone See a Health Care Provider?
You should see a healthcare provider if you develop a fever and symptoms of lower respiratory illness, such as cough or shortness of breath, within 10 days after traveling from countries in or near the Arabian Peninsula*. You should tell the healthcare provider about your recent travel.

Clinician Information:
Health care providers should be alert to patients who develop severe acute lower respiratory illness (e.g., requiring hospitalization) within 10 days after traveling from countries in the Arabian Peninsula* or neighboring countries, excluding those who transited at airports.

•Consider other more common causes of respiratory illness, such as influenza.
•Evaluate patients using the CDC’s case definitions and guidance
•Immediately report patients with unexplained respiratory illness and who meet CDC’s criteria for “patient under investigation” to CDC through the state or local health department.
•Consider evaluating patients for novel coronavirus infection who:
◦develop severe acute lower respiratory illness of known etiology within 10 days after traveling from the Arabian Peninsula,* but who do not respond to appropriate therapy
◦develop severe acute lower respiratory illness who are close contacts of a symptomatic traveler who developed fever and acute respiratory illness within 10 days of traveling from the Arabian Peninsula.*
•See additional recommendations and guidance on CDC’s novel coronavirus website.
•Contact your state or local health department if you have any questions.
Additional Information:
•CDC Novel Coronavirus
•WHO Novel Coronavirus Infection—Update
•Novel Coronavirus 2012, Health Protection Agency
•ECDC: Novel Coronavirus update to Rapid Risk Assessment
•Update: Severe Respiratory Illness Associated with a Novel Coronavirus—Worldwide, 2012–2013 MMWR March 7, 2013/62 (Early Release); 1–2
•Severe Respiratory Illness Associated with a Novel Coronavirus — Saudi Arabia and Qatar, 2012 MMWR October 12, 2012/61; 820–820.
*Countries in and near the Arabian Peninsula: Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestinian territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Yemen.

India is again in the news that we focus on, unfortunately this time its not H1N1 swine flu that has seriously dogged this nation this season, but rather H5N1 avian influenza.

While India has managed to do an excellent job of controlling this bug and in a time when other nations in the nearby region have had serious management problems with this pathogen it has only now re-appeared in a government poultry farm.

The real question that I find significant is, has this bug been at this location previously and if so then has it survived in soil and other mediums to only re-emerge now?

Patna, March 9 (IANS) Hundreds of chicken were culled and large quantity of eggs destroyed in Bihar's Purnea district following an outbreak of avian flu, officials said Saturday. Purnea district magistrate Manish Verma said the administration had issued bird flu alert as a preventive measure. "We are fully prepared to deal with an outbreak," he said. He said bird flu was detected after 300 birds of a government poultry farm died suddenly a few days ago. "We sent blood samples for test. The results confirmed bird flu," Verma told IANS over telephone.

Thank you for that post.

I was beginning to "feel" like I might be a little, well no, seriously paranoid, for my logic and natural sense of what fits and where it belongs.

These comments at least give me some sense that I might not be alone with my suspicions.

And from this comes an epiphany of other tracks of reasoning and thinking.

I will add this though, where this leads is not a place that I would choose voluntarily offer to be at!

There really are some places, events and times that ordinary people should be happy to be unaware of, and I count myself in that demographic.

None the less, information is everything, so we do have to be greatful for this input, naturally.

There has been another fatal case of the novel coronavirus reported to the WHO.

This case too is associated with being in Saudi Arabia and while there are no instances of contact with other infected people, there appears to be a hint of other factors being investigated as sources of infection.

It would be very good news if the investigations that are underway finally provide some specific clue as as to the reservour and vector for this strange behaving bug.

Mar 12, 2013 (CIDRAP News) – A 39-year-old Saudi Arabian man died on Mar 2 of a novel coronavirus (NCoV) infection, marking the world's 15th case and 9th death from the mysterious virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced today.

The WHO gave few details other than to say that the man got sick on Feb 24 and was hospitalized Feb 28. A preliminary investigation found that he had had no contact with other case-patients, but other possible exposures are under investigation, the agency said. The statement did not say where the man lived or give other information about the nature of his illness.

Eight of the world's 15 NCoV cases, including six fatal ones, have occurred in Saudi Arabia. Two fatal cases have been reported in Jordan, two cases involved Qataris, and three, with one death, were in a family cluster in the United Kingdom. All 15 patients had direct or indirect links with the Arabian Peninsula through residence or travel. The UK cluster marked the first clear evidence of person-to-person spread of the virus and showed that mild cases can occur.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following the MERS approaching PANDEMIC: it is now here>>>
Here we have the latest H5N1 avian influenza case reports from the World Health Organization, current as at the 15th of Feb. 2013.

Attention should be made of the comments in the last paragraph, where the Chinese cases from the 10th of Feb had NO reported contact with sick or dead poultry and both cases though from the same province, have no apparent contact either.

This is how we might see the emergence of H2H transmissible H5N1 initially appear, so this region deserves very close scrutiny, at least until how these seperate but similar cases can be described with some certainty.

Influenza at the human-animal interface
Summary and assessment as of 15 February 2013

Human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses and associated animal health events

From 2003 through 15 February 2013, 620 laboratory-confirmed human cases with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection have been officially reported to WHO from 15 countries, of which 367 died.

Since the last update on 16 January 2013, ten new laboratory-confirmed human cases with influenza A(H5N1) virus infection were reported to WHO.

Since 16 January, Cambodia reported seven new human cases with influenza A(H5N1) virus infection including six fatal cases. These cases come from four provinces all located in southern Cambodia. These cases do not seem to be linked epidemiologically, and most had contact with sick poultry in the village. Enhanced surveillance has been put in place and did not detect additional cases linked to these cases. Current evidence does not support human-to-human transmission. It has been suggested that the A(H5N1) virus is endemic in poultry in Cambodia1, and that there is more poultry and human movement around the Lunar New Year. As such, additional sporadic human cases might be expected.
Egypt has reported one new human case with influenza A(H5N1) virus infection in Behera Governorate. The A(H5N1) virus is also endemic in poultry in some areas of Egypt, and additional sporadic human cases are possible.

On 10 February 2013, China reported 2 new human cases of influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. Both remain in critical condition. The cases come from the same province but do not seem to be epidemiologically linked. Neither had documented contact with sick or dead poultry. Contact tracing and follow up is on-going but no additional cases have been identified. The last official report of A(H5N1) in poultry in mainland China was from Guangdong Province in September 2012.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following the MERS approaching PANDEMIC: it is now here>>>
Well thats about all I could find to post for today.

But a little housekeeping that I have to apolagize for continually forgetting.

I have meant to make note of the fact that our small commumity here have been together for over a year now and I wanted to mark that event by offering my thanks to one and all who have ventured here either only occasionally or more regularly.

You have all been a part of something that I consider to be quite special on several fronts, but notably the respect and sense of community and care for each other is something I find most rewarding to observe.

I would like to specifically thank all those who have posted here, your works and efforts have been a very significant aspect to the things that have helped this thread to persist, so I offer my greatest appreciation for your presence here and hope that you continue to contribute whenever you are able, naturally more and newer contributors are always welcome, so please dont be shy.

I come now to the most important thank you of all.

Usually I avoid singeling out any individuals for special attention, but when its good attention then I think that we can make some allowances.

So, please allow me to thank, not in any particular order the following individuals.

UK ANON for being the most prolific detective here.

Here is an individual of immense capabilities, experience, sophistication, education, humanity and sensitivity and the list continues.

You have stuck by identified, guided, educated and been a real supporting and nuturing friend and if I make this personal then that is how I want it to be.

Through working here, I have been blessed to have found a new friend that I can call a true friend and for that I thank you.

MzTreeChick, is another lady who has come here and again, very significantly contributed to this thread and bought information for her world of experience for us to share, she is a truely amazing lady who daily fights a very significant and debilitating and painful afliction.

She never the less, manages to carry on, not just here with us, but more importanly as a wife and mum with very special needs tied into her role, she is one hell of a fighter.

I know beyond doubt that I dont have it in me to do what she routinely achieves, and I am happy for all to know that I admire her immensly for being the person that she is.

Treyfish, mate you are an inigma.

You work so tirelessly and relentlessly.

This gentleman has had his entire history virtually stollen out from under him.
Give up?
Nope, not this man.
Another fighter who has come back and shows what leadership really is.
After losing his web site along with years of reference sources, he is again re-establishing himself as a leading story breaker in the field we take interest in, but more than that, he broadens the news he finds for us.

His work and sources are so good that unfortunately for him, his work is constantly being taken and made the source for others to earn their income and lifestyles from, but does Treyfish ever receive any monetary reward for all his dedicated work for everyone else to feed off.

NO, not even recognition, and that is so wrong.

I would really like to think that from among our numbers there might be a few people who do read this that may be in a position to seriously consider what Treyfish really does and that someone might be in a position to offer some monetary benefit to this man who deserves much more than that but never asks for it.

Please do some thinking on this and maybe you or someone you know might be able to offer something of worth to Treyfish, it would be a tragedy for him and us if he moves away from what he does so well.

Treyfish's special tallents regrettably dont include being as remarkable at making himself rich as his other tallents might indicate.

I however do want both him and all others to understand the respect that I do have for Treyfish, and I would like to be at the front of the line to offer those sentiments to him.

Keep up the good work mate.

To all the rest of you, Rickster, David, and all those that I havent named, you are all special.

So take a few seconds and tell yourselves just that, and relish in that good feeling.

I admire you all and look forward to continuing this journey in your special company.

Again, Thank you all.

cheers

Thank you all.

There you go again with that fluid stream of consciousness again,
not thinking but a stream of thoughts ,they say laughing makes you happy and crying makes you sad , but your words can be powerful don't forget that .
As William Wordsworth wrote ;

Words are to awful an instrument for good

and evil to be trifled with ,

they hold above all other external powers

a dominion over thought

When a person works for the good of all he has virtue

Plato wrote of virtue as harmony of the human soul with the universe

feeding intelligence giving order to a world in chaos .

You my friend always manage to find that golden mean perfectly.

Your words have a poetic beauty that reveals depths within you that deserve great appreciation.

I am deeply humbled by your expressive and carefully chosen words, but they speak of someone far above my position.

But I thank you deeply and sincerely for your missguided expressions.

They are truely sweet, and because they are your words and you are my friend, I have all I need to feel that unique knowing bond that true friends share.

But, please, put that pedestal away, it belongs to someone else, not me.

modesty is a charming trait , only further exemplifing your golden mean having the ability to to do great things without feeling the need of appraisement, having the ability to soldier on regardless of others for the greater good of others.
