There has been a new report of another infection from the novel coronavirus appearing in Saudi Arabia.

This case apperas to be the result of H2H transmission and fortunately the patient only suffered a mild illness and has been discharged from hospital.

Novel coronavirus infection - update [23 Mar 2013]
---------------------
The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has informed the World Health Organization (WHO) of a new confirmed case of infection with the novel coronavirus (nCoV).

The patient is a contact of the previous case reported in the Disease Outbreak News on [12 Mar 2012]. This person suffered a mild illness, and has recovered and been discharged from hospital. Currently, there is insufficient information available to allow a conclusive assessment of the mode and source of transmission.

Experts sound global alert over deadly bat virus
------------------------------------------------
Experts on infectious diseases Thursday [21 Mar 2013] warned people to stay away from bats worldwide after the recent death of an 8-year-old boy bitten in Australia. The boy last month became the 3rd person in the country to die of Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV), for which there is no effective treatment. Doctors Joshua Francis and Clare Nourse of Brisbane's Mater Children's Hospital warned an infectious diseases conference that human-to-human transmission of the virus may be possible.

More comment here on the above post regarding bats.

This commentary is particularly important for medical professionals to observee as it relates to post infective treatment protocols that might not be fully or universally known.

Regarding the information in the article that the child was bitten or scratched 3 weeks prior to showing signs of illness and the moderator's comment: "However, in the present case, in view of the lapse of time between exposure and appearance of symptoms, it is unlikely that post-exposure prophylaxis could have been successful," this article is contradicted by advice from Queensland Health which states that the child was bitten "2 months ago ... prior to becoming ill 3 weeks ago" ( [link to www.youtube.com] as published by Queensland Health on 14 Feb 2013). This suggests a period of at least 5 weeks between contact and symptom development, which is longer than the time required to receive a course of post exposure treatment (between 21 and 28 days).

Well the truth always comes out...eventually.

We all need to acknowledge the heroic and selfless act that this truely dedicated doctor has done and at such a huge personal price that he has suffered as a consequence of his dedicated commitment to humanity.

He should be heralded as a true hero.

This article also begins to lift the veil on some of the "behind the scenes" machinations that some Saudi authorities really have been resorting to in relation to hiding the presence of the novel coronavirus in their region.

Hopefully this story will be far more generally known of, and let it serve as a strong lesson that nothing can be kept secret for very long in this world and when truth is exposed then the perveyors of undesireable acts will be exposed for all to see and scorn.

Yani Skhyeer - RNW / lost Dr. Ali Mohamed Zaki and his job in Saudi Arabia after he discovered that one of the patients in a Saudi hospital infected with a deadly new virus belongs to the family of the coronary or Corona virus. Explore the world of Egyptian viruses dengue fever and another new virus in Saudi Arabia. "I learned I would be problems, but to the world the right to know."

When Ali Mohamed Zaki received last summer demand analysis of the patient's saliva (60 years) suffering from severe breathing problems, did not know then that it would put his career in Saudi Arabia is at stake. And this for the second time, it has brought him his research in 2007 problems with the Saudi authorities. In his laboratory at the hospital, Dr Sulaiman al-Faqih in Jeddah has Zaki to conduct regular scans of such symptoms. The examination came after the other negative, virologist realized that there is something wrong.

Variables SARS virus

"My initial reaction was: Repeat laboratory tests. Fearing that I have you make a mistake. You make tests and the results were identical."

Zaki decided to use a team of scientists viruses in the Dutch Erasmus University, because they have more experience in this area and they have the necessary capabilities. In the meantime, the Egyptian virologist coronavirus examination on the sample and found her. Which was also confirmed by the Dutch team, which went further than that by saying that it's about a new virus.

Corona viruses (coronary) vary Bashdtha between colds and down to the deadly SARS virus. The patient died Saudi infected with the virus after 11 days of hospital admission. Zaki says: "The patient died a terrible way, after he failed a breath once and for all. Because at the time it received the sample for testing, had become need a respirator."

More fatal cases

Zaki decided to submit a report to the "Pro D" an international reporting system for physicians who deal with infectious diseases. "It was a difficult decision," says virologist: "I kept thinking, what if spread of this virus? What if no one knows anything about him, which is contagious? Then will be a disaster. Eventually you send the report in the middle of the night."

Quickly and there was a response: in a London hospital a patient from Qatar has similar symptoms and an unknown virus. Report Zaki led British researchers to conduct tests to see if infected with one of the viruses Coruna.

World Health Organization...Please take note.

Here we have an excellent example from the Chinese on how to responsibly deal with the novel coronavirus monitoring and transparency communicate with the public that it SERVES.

Perhaps we, the rest of the world, should be kicking the current crop of WHO staff out and employing some more appropriately motivated personnel.

DH closely monitors additional overseas case of Severe Respiratory Disease associated with Novel Coronavirus
*******************************************************
The Department of Health (DH) is today (March 24) closely monitoring an additional case of Severe Respiratory Disease associated with Novel Coronavirus reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) by the Ministry of Health (MoH) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The latest case is a contact of the 15th case announced by WHO on March 12.

According to WHO's initial information, the patient suffered a mild illness, and has recovered and been discharged from hospital. Currently, there is insufficient information available to allow a conclusive assessment of the mode and source of transmission.

This latest case brings the global total number of confirmed cases of Severe Respiratory Disease associated with Novel Coronavirus to 16 (including nine deaths), of which nine are from the KSA (including six deaths).

"In view of the latest development, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the DH will seek more information on this case from the WHO and relevant health authorities. The CHP will stay vigilant and continue to work closely with the WHO and other overseas health authorities to monitor the latest development of this novel infectious disease," a DH spokesman said.

Locally, the CHP will continue its surveillance mechanism with public and private hospitals, practising doctors and the airport for any suspected cases of severe respiratory disease associated with novel coronavirus.

"No human infection with this virus has so far been identified in Hong Kong," the spokesman stressed.

"We would like to reassure the public that the Government will be as transparent as possible in the dissemination of information on cases of Severe Respiratory Disease associated with Novel Coronavirus. Whenever there is a suspected case, particularly involving patients with travel history to the Middle East and the affected areas, the CHP will release information to the public as soon as possible," the spokesman added.

Travellers returning from novel coronavirus-affected countries with respiratory symptoms are advised to wear face masks, seek medical attention and reveal their travel history to doctors.

The spokesman reminded members of the public to take heed of personal hygiene, especially washing hands:

* Wash hands before touching the eyes, nose and mouth;
* Wash hands before eating or handling food;
* Wash hands after using a toilet;
* Wash hands after sneezing or coughing and cleaning the nose; and
* Avoid direct contact with animals, birds or poultry.

The public may visit the CHP's website (www.chp.gov.hk/en/content/9/460/19899.html) for more information on personal hygiene.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
With all the talk of influenzas and coronaviruses, its probably a good time to revisit the topic of surgical masks and their effectiveness.

Here is a study that was recently done to evaluate their effectiveness.

Effectiveness of surgical masks against influenza bioaerosols.
Makison Booth C, Clayton M, Crook B, Gawn JM.
SourceHealth & Safety Laboratory (HSL), Buxton, Derbyshire, UK. Electronic address: catherine.makison@hsl.gov.uk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Most surgical masks are not certified for use as respiratory protective devices (RPDs). In the event of an influenza pandemic, logistical and practical implications such as storage and fit testing will restrict the use of RPDs to certain high-risk procedures that are likely to generate large amounts of infectious bioaerosols. Studies have shown that in such circumstances increased numbers of surgical masks are worn, but the protection afforded to the wearer by a surgical mask against infectious aerosols is not well understood.

AIM: To develop and apply a method for assessing the protection afforded by surgical masks against a bioaerosol challenge.

METHODS: A dummy test head attached to a breathing simulator was used to test the performance of surgical masks against a viral challenge. Several designs of surgical masks commonly used in the UK healthcare sector were evaluated by measuring levels of inert particles and live aerosolised influenza virus in the air, from in front of and behind each mask.

FINDINGS: Live influenza virus was measurable from the air behind all surgical masks tested. The data indicate that a surgical mask will reduce exposure to aerosolised infectious influenza virus; reductions ranged from 1.1- to 55-fold (average 6-fold), depending on the design of the mask.

CONCLUSION: We describe a workable method to evaluate the protective efficacy of surgical masks and RPDs against a relevant aerosolised biological challenge. The results demonstrated limitations of surgical masks in this context, although they are to some extent protective.

surely it would be a far greater tradgedy to expose these people to such a high risk of becoming seriously ill or dying, rather than encouraging them to delay their pilgrimage of a year in order for this coronavirus to run its course, contained, and to naturally burn out leaving a far safer future not just for the pilgrims that might be affected first, but the certain ongoing affect to the rest of the world as well.

Yes, UK anon.

I honestly believe and know to the very bottom level of my existance that we both share a love of humanity, you consistently demonstrate your purity and love for life, which I cannot escape either.

There are those emongst us who have made sacrifices way above their calling and for that I would gladly do whatever I can to promote their morality.

They are truely perfect examples of how we all should behave and they deserve to be recognised for their commitments and sense of responsibility and simple humanity to all of us.

This is not a casual thing to just be accepted, these actions have been made at significant personal expense and for no personal gain, simply done as a service in an attempt to try to protect the world as a whole with no deference to outside forces.

Purity is easy to recognise and it is an easy thing to see where these personalities step up to the mark to protect us all.

In the bigger picture we probably owe our lives to these magnificent and selfless persons.

We really do have a serious debt owing to people like this.

And simple recognition is not beyond our capicity.

I personally thank them all on behalf of us all.

This was always going to be an extremely sensitive matter to be managed.

With your guidance you have nursed a clear path do look at and asses this new threat.

The Saudis do not have to concerm themselves with responsibility, this is simply a natural event for which they are just innocent victims for want of a better descripion.

'Superspreaders' could turn new coronavirus into SARS-like event: experts

Helen Branswell, The Canadian Press
Published Monday, Mar. 25, 2013 11:52AM
EDT TORONTO -- People who think the new coronavirus couldn't take off and cause a SARS-like crisis may have forgotten a phenomenon that was a game-changer during SARS -- patients called superspreaders.
At present, this new coronavirus doesn't seem to spread easily from person to person, a fact which some people use to argue it will not become the next SARS. Some limited human transmission has occurred, but confirmed cases are few and sporadically seen.
However, several experts suggest that superspreaders, which turned SARS into a global outbreak, could do the same with this new virus. That term refers to people who buck the transmission trend with a given bacteria or virus, infecting many more people than is the norm.

Dutch virologist Ron Fouchier gives a succinct answer when asked if a superspreader could profoundly alter the pattern of spread with this emerging virus: "Yes."

If the virus infected someone who turned out to be a supersp

Deadly virus: racing camel Arabs has infected?

MUNICH - SCHWABING HOSPITAL IN A SERIOUSLY ILL PATIENT IS TREATED, WHICH SUFFERS FROM AN EXTREMELY RARE AND DANGEROUS PATHOGENS.

t's as rare as fatal: Worldwide infected so far only 15 people with the coronavirus. Nine paid with their lives. Patient number 16 is now in intensive care in Schwabing.
The ill comes from the Arab region. According to the head of the Schwabing Infectious Diseases, Dr. Clemens Wendtner, he had been at the 8th March infected in his home country. The doctor suspects that the Arabs infected with his "close contact racing camels."
Because he had been treated by a doctor several times in Munich, his family decided to let him fly by private jet here. Wendtner stressed that this patient has not set foot in a line pilot. Besides, he had already been intubated in the plane with a closed ventilator - so did the patient can infect anyone. Now the Arabs lies in strict isolation in a single room in Schwabing. His condition was "very critical," says Wendtner, the disease "life threatening".

Hi all.

Right on the money as per usual, UK anon, naturally!

I think it is already too late.

The WHO's poor handling of this, more than likely at the insistance of one or two poorly informed, well meaning but terribly missguided of the local authorities has probably seen to it that this new bug has achieved distribution over an area far too extensive for us to hope to be able to control it to any worthwhile extent.

This will be a very sad lesson to have to suffer through and learn from.

I feared that this would end this way and sadly far too little positive and affirmative action was instigated when it should have been.

When these new bugs appear there has to be immediate and very real positive steps taken and the asumption that what is being witnessed is only a fraction of what already exists is the only sensible position to adopt.

Waiting for a situation to develop further is allowing the bug to advance its invasion to a level well past what can be controlled, and I regrettably think, that is what has happened here.

Well here is an unusual article.

Initially I thought that it may have involved H5N1 avian influenza, but as the story eventually points out the cause of the deaths of the pigs ..."Samples of the dead pigs have tested positive for porcine circovirus, a common swine disease that does not affect humans.".

This however doesent explain the duck deaths, but that many dead pigs would probably foul the water pretty severely, which of course would then be a problem for human consumption which the article points out is the case, so there could be more to be heard of this unusual incident.

Dead ducks in Chinese river as swine flow eases
Updated March 25, 2013, 10:16 pm

SHANGHAI (AFP) - At least 1000 dead ducks were found floating in a Chinese river, state media reported Monday, after Shanghai said it had almost finished recovering thousands of deceased pigs from its main waterway.

The ducks were fished out of a section of river by authorities in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, the official Xinhua news agency said.

They were then buried in plastic bags three meters underground, the report added. It did not specify how the ducks had died.

The report came after Shanghai officials said a clean-up was close to ending after an embarrassing pollution case which saw dead pigs floating down the city's main river, with the total number recovered standing at more than 16,000.

Thats a very good story and lead Treyfish, thank for your continued support here it is highly regarded and valued.

I read all the article and its unfortunate that the mention of "other sources" suggesting that the coronavirus infection came from camels doesent point to where any verification on that assertion can be followed up on.

This could be a very important break through, but we're left with nothing but hearsay really.

Something concerns me here , the camels , have any other of the reported cases had contact with camels ?
Have any of the other cases had contact with this person?
Has this camel if itt is the cause , had contact with sheep or goats ?
Have goats sheep camels had contact with bats ?
HAVE any of the contacts had animal or human eaten from any food that could have become infected , by bats fruit or sheep or goats ?
If none of the above apply then have any of the animals been infected by mites , fleas act that could carry virus on to human host ?
