Geneva, Switzerland — The death toll from Ebola in the three worst-affected countries in West Africa has risen to 7,373 among 19,031 known cases, the World Health Organization said on Saturday.

The latest data, posted overnight on the WHO website, reflected nearly 500 new deaths from the worst ever outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since Dec. 17.

There were 8,759 in Sierra Leone with 2,477 deaths; 7,819 in Liberia with 3,346 deaths.

Sierra Leone’s government this week launched a major operation to contain the epidemic in West Africa’s worst-hit country.

President Ernest Bai Koroma said on national television that travel between all parts of the country had been restricted as part of “Operation Western Area Surge,” and public gatherings would be strictly controlled in the run-up to Christmas.

There are comparatively more survivors in the current epidemic in West Africa (because the scale is also unprecedented). Response strategies in the three West African countries have incorporated psychosocial support for families affected by, and survivors of the virus.

But much remains unknown about the causes and impact of the post-Ebola ailments. In an October survey Nanyonga conducted in Kenema, most Ebola survivors complained of joint pains and headaches. More serious conditions such as deafness, amenorrhea and erectile dysfunction were rare. She said there is a need for further investigation of the ailments suffered by those who recover from Ebola.

“We want to know how long these people suffer from these symptoms. We want to know the progressions, such as of vision loss, if no intervention is put in place. We want to know whether it can be mitigated…

“We also want to know whether the symptoms are due to the virus itself, the treatment, or the huge amounts of chlorine used for disinfection in the treatment centres,” Nanyonga explained.

A team of prominent researchers suggested Thursday that limited airborne transmission of the Ebola virus is "very likely," a hypothesis that could reignite the debate that started last fall after one of the scientists offered the same opinion.
"It is very likely that at least some degree of Ebola virus transmission currently occurs via infectious aerosols generated from the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory tract, or medical procedures, although this has been difficult to definitively demonstrate or rule out, since those exposed to infectious aerosols also are most likely to be in close proximity to, and in direct contact with, an infected case," the scientists wrote. Their peer-reviewed study was published in mBio, a journal of the American Society of Microbiology.

The study's lead author, Michael T. Osterholm, an epidemiologist at the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, touched off a small furor and was condemned by some experts last Sept. 11 when he raised the same possibility in an op-ed piece in the New York Times as concern over the spread of the deadly disease was increasing rapidly....

"There was almost a rush to ensure the public that we knew a lot more than we did," Osterholm said in an interview Wednesday night, repeating a theme he has raised many times before. "But we're saying you can't rule out respiratory transmission."

Well its been quite some time since last posting here.

I see that UK anon has visited and thank her for her contributions.

What has caught my eye is news that Saudi SARS, or as the politically correct set would call it, MERS-Cov has emerged in South Korea with over 100 cases being reported there since the 21st of May this year.

That is a significant outbreak and may herald greater spreading throughout the region.

Worth keeping a close eye on.

Travel Notice: MERS – CoV Situation in Republic of Korea [Updated 28 June 2015]

The Korean authorities have reported more than 100 MERS-CoV cases in the Republic of Korea since 21 May 2015. Most cases were linked to hospitals or healthcare settings.

There is currently no travel advisory against travel to the Republic of Korea.

[Influenza events are a bit accelerated in the Algerian capital. In our 25 Jan 2015 post (Influenza (01): Algeria, H1N1, RFI 20150125.3116721), a single case was reported. In less than 48 hours time, the ministry of health has revealed the deaths of 13 influenza victims, 4 of them in the last 24 hours.

A question was raised in that post about the true nature of the existing strain of what is referred to by the health authorities as "seasonal" influenza; is it really seasonal by the true definition of the word, or should we wait until the true genomic sequencing and typing is done by WHO-Collaborating Centres for influenza viruses?

Another query: Is there any relationship between these high fatality rates and the use of outdated Tamiflu antivirals previously mentioned?
note mortality rate and time frame might indicate a serious flu this year globally

China reports human H7N9 avian influenza infection in Shanghai man
------------------------------------------------------------------
According to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning, a 59-year-old man is the latest human case of avian influenza A(H7N9) in the Mainland, bringing the total to 665 cases since 2013.

The patient was confirmed positive on 1 Jan 2016 and is currently under treatment.

This follows a H7N9 avian influenza case that was reported by the Jiangxi Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission on 31 Dec 2015 (see [1]). According to an Avian Flu Diary report, this is the 1st report of H7N9 out of Jiangxi Province this fall, and only the 11th overall case reported from that province (ranked no. 8 in number of cases in Mainland China).

According to the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health, avian influenza is caused by those influenza viruses that mainly affect birds and poultry, such as chickens or ducks. Clinical presentation of avian influenza in humans includes eye infection (conjunctivitis), flu-like symptoms (e.g. fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches) or severe respiratory illness (e.g. chest infection).

The incubation period ranges from 7 to 10 days. The more virulent forms can result in respiratory failure, multi-organ failure and even death. People mainly become infected with avian influenza through close contact with infected birds and poultry (live or dead) or their droppings.

Human-to-human transmission is inefficient. People in close contact with poultry are more susceptible to contracting avian flu. The elderly, children and people with chronic illness have a higher risk of developing complications such as bronchitis and chest infection.

"We keep registering new facts of growing the epidemics of acute respiratory infections among the Ukrainian military.

Just since the beginning of this week more than 200 Ukrainian military have been taken to civil and military hospitals of Kharkov and Dnepropetrovsk. It is important to repeat that the DPR intelligence previously reported the research being carried out in a private laboratory in the locality Shelkostantsiya, 30 km away from the city of Kharkov, and involving US military experts. According to our information, it is there where the deadly Californian flu strain leaked from," Basurin said.

Spanish Influenza of 1918 hits California’s Central Coast
1910s by David Middlecamp
10-12-1918-flu-hits-here.jpgPeople who lived through it could tell you what researchers have recently confirmed. The 1918 Spanish Influenza pandemic was deadly because a group of three genes in the flu virus allowed it to invade deep into the lungs and open the door to pneumonia.
In some instances bacteria can cause pneumonia but in this case flu was the direct cause.
Spanish flu killed 2.5 percent, compared to 1 percent in a usual flu season. The victims were often otherwise healthy who fell to severe pneumonia.
The flu virus mutates often which is why you don’t have immunity from season to season. It remains to be seen how serious the current Swine flu concern will be.
In 1918 first wonder drugs were almost two decades in the future. Sulfanilamide and Penicillin were not a part of the regular medical tool kit until the World War II era and later.
Home remedies like lemon juice and malted milk could only do so much.
Victims would complain of fever, sore throat, sensitivity to light, headache and a feeling like they “had been beaten all over with a club.”
With armies moving around the world during the First World War, living in close quarters, it was a recipe for concentrating and spreading the disease.
There was plenty of warning on the Central Coast of the gathering storm.11-23-1918-flu.jpg
An outbreak had flared up at Fort Riley Kansas in March then things were quiet for a while.
At the end of summer the disease would spread across the eastern seaboard.
August – Boston
October – Philadelphia and New York
The crime rate in Chicago fell 43 percent. Even criminals got the flu.
More than once a health commissioner would predict that their city was safe from epidemic only to have the reality crash around them a few days later.
In September a San Francisco health official predicted that flu would not reach them.
By October 15 there were 1,200 reported cases of influenza and the city was contemplating closing public places.
The Daily Telegram had been covering the situation with stories on the inside pages with chipper headlines like this October 1 gem:
