It would appear that a new and severely interlectually compromised entity has stumbled into our valued thread.

As always, if anyone has something of value and appropriate interest to bring here them that presence is valued and welcomed.

Apparently there are those that suffer so badly at this simple comprehension that they will feel the need to demonstrate their deficiencies.

So it is probably a good time for us all to be reminded of what we are not!

cheers

Well, very little on the horizon to report today.

At first glance thats a good thing, a very good thing, but its probably timeley to remember that these bugs never sleep and what looks good today could all change overnight.

I dont wish to sound pessimistic but those are the real truths and we are currently witnessing the flu season ramp up quite significantly in the Northern Hemisphere.

We are also seeing a return of H1N1 Swine Flu that went pandemic in 2009.

That quite simply has been the source of surprise for me, it simply wasnt expected to be so widely spread nor so predominant of the strains that are circulating.

Its important to also remember that this H1N1 strain is also now commonly carrying a new mutation with the "M" gene making it more H2H transmissible, which, with a little reflection might explain why it seems to have crept under the radar so to speak, and caught us somewhat off guard.

Take care everyone.

Best wishes to all.

I previously engaged in several threads regarding the potentially devestating potential of H5N1.

Some readers who havent even attempted to gain any sort of education have downvoted my thread to the point that no-one got the chance to read and learn, on a topic that I have been closely monitoring for several years, ever since the World Health Organization announced their concerns for it to go pandemic.

Now the following link is showing its steady but relentless advance and in all probability its eventual final evolutionary mutation to become an airborne dissease that will readily spread throughout humanity with devistating effects.

A recent study of H5N1 viruses from poultry in Egypt is demonstrating an antigenetic drift which could potentially become a problem in developing effective vaccinations for both poultry and also humans.

Virology. 2012 Nov 1. pii: S0042-6822(12)00457-6. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2012.09.016. [Epub ahead of print]

Abstract
The extensive circulation of Highly Pathogenic (HP) H5N1 Avian Influenza in Egypt in poultry since 2006 resulted in the emergence of distinct clades with the recent identification of a further clade: 2.2.1.1. The aim of this study was to characterize for the first time the antigenic profile of an extensive collection of genetically diverse Egyptian H5N1 HP viruses isolated between 2007 and 2010 applying antigenic cartography and principal component analysis to serological data. We identified that Egyptian H5N1 viruses have undergone significant antigenic diversification between 2007 and 2010 and two distinct antigenic clusters co-circulated in 2010. Such clusters correlated with 2.2.1 and 2.2.1.1 clades, showing for the first time that the new emerging clade 2.2.1.1 is antigenically distinct. This study highlights that the antigenic diversity of H5N1 HP Egyptian viruses may represent a potential challenge for the development of an effective vaccination programme for animal and human health in Egypt.

Yesterday we reported the sad passing of two women in India from H1N1 Swine Flu, and now today there has been a further life lost to Swine Flu there.

Another H1N1 death in Coimbatore

One more person died at a private hospital in the city on late Monday night after he was tested H1N1 positive. With this death, the toll in the city, of the number of people who died due to H1N1, has gone to three. Earlier, a 44-year-old woman from Sriram Nagar near Vellalore and a 77-year-old man from Uppilipalayam were declared dead on October 26 and 28 at two private hospitals in the city. The total number of H1N1 deaths in Coimbatore since January 2012 has gone to six out of which three persons were from Tirupur, Nilgiris and Palakkad district in Kerala, who were later referred to hospitals in the city for treatment.

This next research article looks at how influenza viruses can be spread across large areas by migrating birds.

Its a topic that we have touched on before but does demonstrate that even with our best efforts to contain a pandemic virus, we may never be completely able to achieve that goal with this natural vector ever present.

Birds and Viruses at a Crossroad - Surveillance of Influenza A Virus in Portuguese Waterfowl

Abstract Top
During recent years, extensive amounts of data have become available regarding influenza A virus (IAV) in wild birds in northern Europe, while information from southern Europe is more limited. Here, we present an IAV surveillance study conducted in western Portugal 2008–2009, analyzing 1653 samples from six different species of waterfowl, with the majority of samples taken from Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). Overall 4.4% of sampled birds were infected. The sampling results revealed a significant temporal variation in the IAV prevalence, including a pronounced peak among predominantly young birds in June, indicating that IAV circulate within breeding populations in the wetlands of western Portugal. The H10N7 and H9N2 subtypes were predominant among isolated viruses. Phylogenetic analyses of the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase sequences of H10N7, H9N2 and H11N3 virus showed that sequences from Portugal were closely related to viral sequences from Central Europe as well as to IAVs isolated in the southern parts of Africa, reflecting Portugal’s position on the European-African bird migratory flyway. This study highlights the importance of Portugal as a migratory crossroad for IAV, connecting breeding stationary waterfowl with birds migrating between continents which enable transmission and spread of IAV.

Yesterday, I spoke of how H1N1 Swine Flu appeared to be slipping under the radar and how it could be developing into another potential pandemic this year.

This post will take readers to an article that is not all that new, but perhaps might be a very timely and appropriate source of information that is quite relevant to todays conditions.

Swine flu: Eight myths that could endanger your life

FACT VERSUS FANTASY
The second wave of the swine flu pandemic is now under way in the northern hemisphere. Case numbers are climbing fast and in some places vaccination has begun.

So what's the big deal? The virus hasn't evolved into the monster that some feared and most cases are mild. Were all those pandemic warnings just scare-mongering?

From this next World Health Organisation summery of Influenza from around the world, we gat a good picture of how the various strains are circulating during the reporting period.

Its worth noting that H1N1 is evident in several regions and with the Northern Hemisphere season now ongoing and experiencing steadily increasing infection rates.

If you live in this zone, then now is the time to be seeking out your personal alcohol based hand washing solutions and perhaps even sourcing some good face masks to have on standby.

If there is a significant outbreak in your area, then you can expect supplies to vanish pretty quickly, so being prepared early is the best suggestion.

Influenza virus activity in the world

-------------------------------------

Source: Laboratory confirmed data from the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS). Based on FluNet reporting (as of 23 Oct 2012, 15:00 UTC), during weeks 40 to 41 (30 Sep 2012 to 13 Oct 2012), National Influenza Centres (NICs) and other national influenza laboratories from 93 countries, areas or territories reported data. The WHO GISRS laboratories tested more than 18 909 specimens. 996 were positive for influenza viruses, of which 575 (57.7 percent) were typed as influenza A and 421 (42.3 percent) as influenza B. Of the sub-typed influenza A viruses, 206 (39.4 percent) were influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and 317 (60.6 percent) were influenza A(H3N2). Of the characterized B viruses, 16 (72.7 percent) belong to the B-Yamagata lineage and 6 (27.3 percent) to the B-Victoria lineage.

Summary

-------

During weeks 40 and 41, influenza activity remained low globally although increased reports of laboratory confirmed influenza positives have been received from some countries in the northern hemisphere. Influenza A(H3N2) viruses remained the predominant subtype globally, followed by influenza B and A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses.

Sporadic detections of influenza viruses have been reported from Europe and North America. In Canada, A(H3N2) and A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses were detected while in the United States of America, influenza B viruses have been predominant followed by A(H3N2) and A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses. In Europe, detections of A(H3N2) and influenza B viruses have been reported.

In Asia, co-circulation of A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses and influenza B viruses continued in India and Nepal. Influenza B viruses remained the predominant subtype in the region. Sporadic detections of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 and influenza B viruses were reported from Qatar in the Middle East.

In the southern hemisphere, influenza activity has decreased. Influenza activity was reported to be at baseline level in Australia while no reports of laboratory confirmed influenza positives were received from other countries in Oceania.

In Africa, A(H3N2) continued to circulate throughout central, eastern and western Africa.

In Central and South America, influenza activity increased slightly in Argentina, Brazil and Chile compared to previous weeks. Co-circulation of influenza A(H3N2) and B viruses continued in a few countries throughout the region.

News from Saigon is reporting that they too are now prohibiting the flu vaccine produced by Novartis that has had problems with quality control with their vaccine for this season and has seen it banned in several European countries to date.

Healthcare news in brief

Break...

On the same day, the Ministry of Health said it has granted a registration number for the Agrrippal S1 vaccine, but they still have not been imported into the country. Several European countries are said to have stopped using this vaccine, made by Italian Novartis Vaccine & Diagnostic Company, to fight flu infection.

The health watchdogs in Europe have held onto the Novartis flu vaccine due to the viral proteins present in it. Flu vaccines are designed to induce antibodies to use these proteins to prevent infection, so that if an immunized person comes in contact with influenza the antibodies work to fight flu infection.

The health watchdog in Vietnam has ordered all departments of health in provinces and cities to inform importers to stop using this vaccine.

Hi UK Anon,

As usual your words are humble and also sweet and you do deserve far more that my limited capacity to describe, can express.

I would have expected nothing less from you.

You know that we have a personal connection that grew from this thread and nothing will ever change the respect among a multitude of other emotions that I hold for you.

When I write I have the benefit to review what I wish to convey before I have to comitt my postings, so I gain a benefit.

I really dont see any special anything in that, but I appreciate your praise.

Its a nice thing to get some feedback that this thread might be making a difference.

Coming from you I will take that as a positive thing.

In recent times I have been aware that there have been quite a few threads pop up on GLP that in one way or another would attempt to travel the road of doom and gloom in regard to potential viral or biological dangers to humanity and I have to say that as I post virtually daily I might be guilty of stimulating less sensible GLP readers to see things way beyond the actual realities that we seek to stay in contact with in regared to what this thread is genuinely concerned with.

It is a matter that I have a personal conflict with, i.e. am I contributing for the benefit of the majority, or am I stimulating the lunatic fringe.

With all respect to GLP that potential possibility remains high within the possibilities available...I have constantly told myself that this web site is and has been improving in its quality for a long time and that is why I have persisted, but even in the last couple of days we have had a visit from, well someone that we would all consider not completely appropriate to our thrust here, so I continue to examine the relevance of what efforts that we all make here.

I agree with you that 99% of this thread is of value, well at least thats what I believe, but I am the most prolific poster here and I often wonder if Im wasting my time with all this.

For you to say that I am making a difference is encouraging and I thank you for that comment, but I really do wonder if that is a real reflection of what is happening here, or perhaps a kind offer of appreciation.

Having a nursing background is what drives me, and recognising the awful potential that the people of this planet might have to deal with is what motivates me to devote the time that I do in the hope that one day it just might make a difference and even perhaps save just one life.

If I can do that then my place on this planet has been justified, but that is yet to be the case so I continue to try to make that difference.

I consider myself extremely fortunate that there have been several people such as yourself and others who we all know, that have made their home here too, and in that respect this is a colabrative work that continues to be a work in progress for however long it takes our hero researchers to finally complete their works of dilligence and finally find a solution to both our viral and also our bacterial menances that claim far too many lives from our communities, families and loved ones.

I honestly believe that we as a race really are on an historical precipace and that we will see these dreams come true for all mankind.

I meerly hope that I am around long enough to hear of those final break throughs.

In the mean time though, I invite all who read this to become a part of our very special community and to add whatever they may find of interest and I also again cant offer sufficient praise to those who have been regular contributors as well as loyal readers of this thread.

Hopefully we are all here for good reasons and beneficial outcomes.

As always any thoughts directions and suggestions in addition to contributions are always highly appreciated and encouraged.

Bring it on people!

cheers to all
