Following another outbreak of now confirmed H5N1 avian influenza in Nepal, officials have decided to cull all poultry in the affected general area, a total of over 3,000 fowl, in order to prevent the spread of this disease further.

This is a lesson that the Indonesian Authorities desperately need to learn and duplicate in order to begin to limit the dangerous situation they continue to down play in their area of responsibilities.

The Central Veterinary Lab, Tripureshwar has confirmed that chicken at a poultry farm in Dharke, Naubise in Dhading district died due to bird flu. Samples were taken for test from local Laxmi Pokhrel's poultry farm after the chicken started dying all of a sudden at the poultry farm since December 13. A meeting of the District Livestock Office, Dhading, chaired by Chief District Officer and Chairman of Bird Flu Technical Committee, Dhading district, Bed Prasad Kharel, held today, declared the area around the farm as bird flu infected area and decided to cull the fowls here to prevent the disease from spreading to other areas.

Back to the crusade that Ive been running regarding the CDC's handling of the H3N2v origins.

We now have the following which seems to be providing the answers finally.

From all that I can gleen from all this it would appear the the original day care centre child that was admitted to hospital and who it was originally though was to be Patient Zero, has now turned out to NOT be that Index Case.

Where all the confusion has risen from, has been the fact that this patient tested negative for influenza on admission to hospital.

This gave the appearance of an Index Case , where in fact there were earlier cases that were the result of reassortments from another similar virus.

The case that tested negative for influenza at hospital admission now appears at least to me as having been a false negative, as this person did have previous close contact with other people who had also been in contact with swine.

One of the main problems that has contributed to the confusion over this incident has been that the CDC as consistently been on the record as stating that this strain of H3N2v as NOT been hughly H2H transmissible, when in fact it has displayed quite actuve H2H transmissibility.

This whole saga has been quite significant and had the CDC been more thorough with an emerging new strain of virus than they had, then this confusion may have been avoided.

The while senario only goes to highlight some of the curve balls that can and in this case indeed were hidden in the details.

Lets hope that in the future the CDC will fully study and gain complete understanding of any new viral strains that do emerge, as to make the simple missjudgements or assumptions that occurred here could have far greater implications with a virus more deadly that what this H3N2v has turned out to be.

Turning bad experience into good as, we all should do with this type of experience, we are perhaps fortunate to have had this relatively harmless experience to give us all valuable lessons to learn from.

Ultimately, after much ado and considerable noise for this writer and I am sure several others, I would like to offer my belated congratulations to the CDC for taking the criticism and continuing on in adversity to finally establish all the relevant facts with this virus.

I am quite prepared to also go on record saying that it is to the CDC's credit that they did work through adversity and produced the goods for us all as we charge them to do.

So, with all this in mind, I personally offer my congratulations to the CDC and would also like to add that they have restored my faith in their capacity to be what we expect them to be.

Thank you.

arkay.

Iowa H3N2v Child Matches 2012 Cases
Recombinomics Commentary 16:30
December 20, 2012

The CDC has released a full set of cloned (and original) sequences from the week 47 case in Iowa, A/Iowa/16.2012, collected on November 17, almost exactly one year after the cluster in Iowa involving confirmed cases in classmates and symptomatic relatives (father and brother of index case). Those three cases were the last three cases in 2011 which matched the seven prior human cases. All had an H1N1pdm09 MP gene as well as PB1 and NA from circulating swine H1N2v.

Those three cases were followed by a cluster at a West Virginia Mineral County day care center (A/West Virginia/06/2011 and A/West Virginia/07/2011). Two cases were confirmed but 22 additional contacts of the index case were symptomatic, signaling sustained human transmission.

If this wasnt so extremely serious, youd laugh till the next forcast of the end of the world!

I spotted this story on Treyfish's blogspot...

[link to swineflumagazine.blogspot.com.au]

as its his lead story today, so I hope he doesent mind me using his link to the story.

Regular readers will remember back in April both Treyfish and I were pretty critical of the way matters were being handled and information was being witheld by the health officials of Jordan over the outbreak of a deadly disease that was spreading throughout one of their teaching hospitals and which resulted in the deaths of a number of their medical personnel and their relatives there.

The case was so badly handled and though it ultimately burned itself out without any answers, eventually the deadly novel coronavirus that later showed up in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, was ultimatedly identified as the same that had hit Jordan in April.

Had the Jordanian health officials been far more pro-active and responsible in the execution of their duties, that novel coronavirus might have been identified far earlier and some later deaths might have been avoided.

Well this article from Jordan now sees these same health authorities blatantly congratulating themselves on what a wonderful job they did with the way they dealt with the April incident at their hospital.

They clain that they are a model for others to follow!!

This just is the most unimmaginable load of bull excrement I might have ever come across in my life.

Not only are these people dangerous, they are absolutely without remorse for their culpable innactions.

Delusions of grandeur dont come close to describing how out of touch with reality they really are.

What they should be saying its that we are humbly resigning and handing ourselves over for judgement for our part in the unnessary death and suffering of others as a direct result of our culpable actions/innactions.

These people disgust me.

The CDC has just released a fact sheet on the novel coronavirus that the above story relates to.

This is what they know so far.

In the News
Novel (New) Coronavirus in the Arabian Peninsula
This information is current as of today, December 20, 2012 at 14:43 EST

Updated: December 20, 2012

What Is the Current Situation?
In recent months, a new (or novel) coronavirus has been identified in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Jordan. Public health authorities around the world are increasing monitoring of respiratory illnesses and collaborating to learn more about the new coronavirus and the disease in humans.

The risk of the new coronavirus for travelers is thought to be low. CDC recommends that travelers to countries on the Arabian Peninsula or neighboring countries monitor their health and see a doctor right away if symptoms such as cough, breathing difficulties, and fever develop. Countries on and near the Arabian Peninsula are Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestinian territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Yemen.

What Is a Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a cause of the common cold. A coronavirus also was the cause of the severe respiratory illness called SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). SARS caused a global epidemic in 2003, but there has not been any known case of SARS since 2004. This new coronavirus is not similar to the coronavirus that caused SARS.

What Is Known About This New Coronavirus?
Little is known about this new coronavirus. For example, it is not yet known how this virus is spread. What is known is that this virus is different from any other that has been previously found in humans. Symptoms of this new virus appear to be fever, cough, and breathing difficulties.

How Can Travelers Protect Themselves?
Although little is known at this time about how this virus is spread, taking these everyday actions can help prevent the spread of germs and protect against colds, flu, and other illness:

•Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
•Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
•Avoid close contact with sick people.
•There is no vaccine for this new coronavirus, but there are shots available to protect you from other illnesses. Be sure you are up to date with all of your shots, and see your healthcare provider at least 4 to 6 weeks if possible before travel to get any additional shots. Visit CDC’s Coronavirus website for more information about this situation and Travelers' Health website for more information on healthy travel.
•This new coronavirus causes a respiratory infection that may be confused with influenza. It is therefore especially important to get a flu vaccine as this will help your doctor look for other causes for your illness should you develop any flu-like symptoms.
•If you are sick
◦Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue in the trash.
◦Avoid contact with other people to keep from infecting them.

Any death from H1N1 swine flu is terrible.

But when its an infant its tragic.

I cant imagine the deapth of dispair that this poor baby's parents must be feeling.

Baby dies of swine flu, toll touches 35.

A one-and-a-half-year-old baby from Lonavala died due to swine flu (H1N1 virus) at Ruby Hall Clinic here on Thursday. While the swine flu toll has gone up to 35 since April this year, this is the first death in the paediatric age group, Dr S T Pardeshi, acting health chief of Pune Municipal Corporation said.

The family stays in Kusgaon Budruk in Lonavala. The child had cold and cough since November 25, it was only on December 7 that the girl was taken to the local doctor for treatment. She, however, was breathless and did not respond to the treatment following which she was shifted to Bhide Hospital at Navi Peth on December 9.

Back to the ongoing difficulties that Indonesia is experiencing with H5N1 outbreaks around their region.

Here is a case of a person being infected with H5N1.

Fortunately for himself, this patient must have been very aware of some of the risks he was living with as he seems to have reported for treatment very early , which will hopefully have a good outcome for him.

Currently, he is in intensive care in the isolation room Room Vincent's Hospital (RS) Elisabeth Semarang. This case stems from seven chickens recently purchased by M on the market suddenly died. Shortly thereafter, he was suffering from flu. Because worry, M took the initiative to check into the hospital. M has been undergoing treatment since Monday (17/12) and at Elisabeth.

There is a fresh report of H1N1 swine flu being active in the Middle East, where it is being reported that three people have succumed to this flu.

Three Palestinians were killed during the last week of influenza (A) H1N1 in the West Bank, said today the Palestinian Ministry of Health. "There were three deaths in the past week, and more than 50 people infected with the virus," he told AFP Ramlawi Assad, Director General of Health Services for the West Bank. He said that the deaths occurred in the cities of Jenin, Qalqilya and Tulkarm, by relativizing their impact.

Scientists examine Alaska ducks in frigid Fairbanks river for avian flu clues

Bad news for birds: Avian malaria exists as far north as Fairbanks

Avian cholera could spread into Arctic, scientists warn

FAIRBANKS -- Chilly weather isn't enough to keep ducks out of open areas of the Chena River, which means it's not enough to keep scientists out either.

Despite temperatures in the Interior Alaska city of 30,000 dipping toward 40-below zero Saturday, scientists waded into the slushy Chena River, nets in tow, collecting a handful of mallard ducks and bringing them back to a makeshift lab in downtown Fairbanks.

It would seem that KFC are having a bit of a trying time at present in the Eastern regions.

We recently reported where KFC were linked with illegal imports of chicken meat for outlets in Kathmandu, and now we have this report of accusations of further illegal practices that are also linked to this international mega-Co.

Whilst in both these cases there has been an association with KFC, neither have so far been shown to be at the hands of KFC and I think that it is fair to point out that a company with the massive through put that KFC has, and the fact that they no doubt would be one of the largest consumers of chicken products, the temptation for others to do wrong in an attempt to supply such a lucrative consumer of product would be more than sufficient motivation for others to do wrong for personal gain.

At the same time leaving KFC as an innocent bystander, being slandered by their innocient association simply by being a lucrative market for wrong doers.

KFC chicken under investigation in China

Fast food giant KFC's Chinese subsidiary has vowed to cooperate with authorities investigating claims by state television that its chicken suppliers had injected banned substances and growth hormones in its poultry.

State television CCTV said that a commercial chicken producer called Liu He Zhi Tuan had been feeding antiviral drugs and growth hormones to its chickens. The chickens were then supplied to KFC and McDonalds, without any kind of quality checks.

Hi, telling it straight.

Firstly, welcome to our thread, all are welcome here and are invited to take an active part.

All that is requestd is that posts are relevant for the most and that a level of decency is observed.

Outside that any level of participation is simply left to each persons individual choice.

As to your questions.

In the main, what I personally believe I hope never comes into play here, having said that, I do believe that H5N1 does indeed have the very real potential to do massive damage to the worlds population.

So far it has been more good luck than good management that has probably held this monster at bay to date, but it does have just a couple more mutations to go to become H2H transmissible.

There has been recent evidence of it making various genetic shifts in different regions around the world and sooner or later it is likely to make those genetic shifts that will bring it closer to H2H transmission, this is more or less inevitable.

Hopefully though, our excellent researchers around the world are very much on it as far as learning and understanding all there is to know about this bug, in order to be able to fight it.

I do believe that we have an even better than odds on chance against this bug, even today.

Its places like this that people can come to and source lots of helpful information and to learn of the many things that they can individually do in order to protect themselves as much as possible from these kinds of infections.

Simple little things like good handwashing practices, caughing or sneezing into the crook of your elbow.

Common sense things, like staying home and away from other people when you are sick, and when it is necessary to go out into places where there are sick people around then wearing appropriate face masks are all simple and practicle things that people can and indeed should do when these or any type of contagous bugs are circulating.

If everyone observed just these few simple things then the risk factor of contracting any type of contagous infection would probably be halved straight away.

So anyway, I hope that I have been able to answer your questions adequately.

If I can help more please feel free to ask as Im certain that some helpful answer will be forthcoming.

cheers

Hope you don't mind, but I've been lurking this thread since the beginning on my only personal watch pin.
I read, The Hot Zone, because of this thread last month.
Frankly, this thread scares the hell out of me. H5N1 to go H2H after a couple more mutations?
Good Lord! That idea is frightening.
The back of that book gave an ominous warning.
It's only a matter of when, not if one of these monsters goes airborne and takes out a significant portion of the Earth's population.
Thanks for this thread. Please keep it going.

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...now its Vietnam and spreading?
Hi Klaxon,

its good to hear from you and that you find value in what we attempt to do here.

Unfortunately, what you have grasped is almost inevidible, H5N1 will in all liklyhood sooner or later become H2H transmissible.

Its the nature of viruses to always seek better hosts and to do that they naturally evolve and mutate to "experiment" in their search to find ever getter opportunities for larger host pools and humanity for them would be the prize of all prizes.

This of course is not a consious action, simply it is what all organisms on this planet do, its their innate will to miltiply and survive.

They, viral collonies, will and do benefit from these characheristics and though the thought of a successful evolution buy say H5N1 to find easy human hosts seems on the surface of it to be highly damaging to the human population, which it certainly is, humanity will benefit from such an attack as well.

Though it is hard to see against the horrific background that would ensue.

Those survivors would be, in elovutionary terms, better examples of the human form than those that perished.

I know how awful and inhuman it is to make those observations, but when all is said and done this is why we, humanity are at the top of the food chain.

It has been the result of hundreds of generations of trial and tribulation and those who have survived have been better adaptions of the species and always more capable than those that were eliminated, its a cold study but an accurate one.

There is a slightly better outlook here as well, and that is that we as a society have become so sophisticated that today we employ all manner of tools to assist us in maintaining our position at the top of the food chain, and that would imply that the threat of a H5N1 pandemic has already put our researchers on the path to find ways to beat this threat BEFORE it becomes that menace.

Here we have a massive advantage that we have learnt to use to defend ourselves with.

It is in this specialized arena that I place my faith that we can and will find ways to annul these threats before they are able to develop into the highly dangerous set of evolutionary organisms that will pose that threat to us.

Fortunately because we can perceive a threat before it can actually become one, we have the opportunity to use our intelligence and time to learn, using tools to defend ourselves against even the worst organisms that exist around us, and that is why I have faith in humanity.

Its probably to a degree why I expend so much energy participating in what role I can play in the bigger picture by communicating and assisting in some way to help others to have some knowledge and therefore defenses too.

We are all a small part of the whole, and one way or another we all connect and have a reason for being here.

This might be a bit of a heady type of way of looking at the picture as a whole, but take away all the emotion and strip everything away and more or less this is what is left to observe.

Humanity as a whole is a single organism when viewed from the perspective of group dynamics, I think.

We do work as a single entity to defend and protect the greater.

We have even learned to protect the weaker amongst us.

Those that in nature would perish, so indeed we really have evolved to a highter level and now we stand unique amongst all other life forms on this planet,we are the only species that ensures the protection of the weaker amongst us, perhaps because we are now so individually diversified that even those physical weaker can and do contrbute to the overall strength in other ways, such as providing interlectual strengths.

For whatever reason, humanity values all life amongst us and sees reason to include all in our evolutionary journey, which every day leaves all other lifeformes slightly further away from us than the day before.

As a race, we are going somewhere, there has to be a reason for our constant progress, even when there doesent appear to be any significant driving forces to keep us constantly pushing forward.

That constant push must exist for some reason and simply that we dont understand what that reason might be today, doesent remove motivatation.

Time will tell.

Anyway, please tag along for the ride, we hope that you will learn something helpfull and you are always welcome here.

cheers

Hi David,

I hope you have had an enjoyable Christmas, and of course I hope your new year brings with it a year for happiness, health, love and prosperity in all its forms.

Excellent to see you here and keeping the thread alive, good work.

Regarding your comment on using infected bodies as a form of Bio-warefare.

I heard in the last couple of years that some waring people in Africa had resorted to using this tactis with ebola infected people against their enemies.

Disgusting and abhorrent acts against other humans.

War certainly brings out the worst in us.

Also a very risky tactic.

Those who handled the infected bodies would be a high risk themselves without knowledge and the correct protective clothing to carry out such an act.

And with that comes the probability that the whole exercise could easily backfire and actually do more damage to the instigating camp than to those for whom it was intended.

In exactly the same way, one must wonder at what Baxter thought they were doing when they contaminated so much vaccine with H5N1.

Certainly they would have began a pandemic, but these things cannot be aimed like a conventional weapon, they do not descriminate and everyone is equally exposed.

There are only two senarios that may have been at play when they did this.

The first is that they had a vaccine available for immediate use, which is likely as they were releasing a specific clade of H5N1 and could reasonably be expected to have used the same virus to develop an specific vaccine for the specific strain of the virus.

The other would be a senario where those that were privvy to the knowledge, also had the opportunity to avail themselves of long term isolation facilities, thereby being in a position of comfort knowing that they were safe no matter how the pandemic affected the wider population.

Again examples of humanities darker sides.

Might I also add that with every day now, in this new age of instant communication, we are witnessing a new world where those type of actions are becoming ever more difficult for evil self focused groups to operate against us all.

This is also one reason why we must oppose all and any attempts to censor the internet.

The only reason anyone could want to do such a thing would be to restrict and retard those freedoms in order to facilitate wrong doings.

Honest free use of the internet has NO need for censorship, only disshonest and evil actions require secrecy and dark corners from where they can operate.

It had been my intention to have a rest over this season break.

I have however, been keeping a casual eye in things and today I have found this somewhat alarming news that demands that it is posted.

It is news of an outbreak of H1N1 swine flu, on the West Bank, where it has claimed the lives of 9 Palastinens and has infected a further 187 victims.

These numbers are quite alarming and the largest we have witnessed since this thread commenced.

The Palestinien Authorities have given assurances that they have the supplies and manpower to deal with this situation and we can only hope that their assurances are well founded, as with this sort of infection rates in such a short time period, could signal an out of control outbreak, so lets hope not.

We will be watching this closely.

PA says 187 cases of H1N1 influenza strain recorded, but it has resources to deal with spread of virus; Israel monitoring situation. An outbreak of swine flu has claimed the lives of nine Palestinians in the West Bank, the office of Palestinian Authority Prime Minster Salam Fayyad said Saturday. The PA said that 187 cases of the H1N1 influenza strain had been recorded since the start of the winter season, the majority of which were in the northern West Bank.

Hi MzTreeChick,

thank you for your wishes.

I certainly hope that you and yours had an enjoyable holiday season.

Ive enjoyed my break, but now I feel that things should get back on track as there are a few things happening around the place.

General news would indicate that the flu season is well and truely in full swing in the Northern Hemisphere as we were expecting.

I have become conscious of the fact that mainly because of this thread, there are many MSM persons using this thread for their own stories and sensationalizing those stories making some outlandish claims, such as claims of deaths from the flu, without any qualifications and a later lack of subsequent reportings via the CDC and the WHO, etc.

Truely calous reporting showing the degraded state of mainstream reporting today.

As a consequence of this I will be making very careful decisions as to exactly what does get posted here as I dont want this thread to spawn increased and inappropriate scuttlebut on influenza just for the entertainment or worse still the profitting of what is supposed to be a credible source of HELPFUL information which we share here.

This is no place for lazy pelagerizers to scrape up their grubby stories just to fill their weekly colunm quotas.

In more recent times we have been watching Indonesia and the way they have been addressing their management of the appearance of the new clade of H5N1 that has caused numerous outbreaks of H5N1 in their territories, the last I read they had issues with this virus in over 30 of their districts, leaving only 2 districts unaffected to date.

Now we see that even Bali, a very popular tourist destination is being severely affected with new outbreaks that are affecting their commercial duck farms.

What has been a constant vexing problem is the fact that for reasons best known to themselves, the authorities seem to have a very relaxed attitude to the threat of H5N1 and they definately appear to not fully understand the real facts associated with this killer bug.

I have previously said on more that one occasion that if H5N1 ever attained H2H transmissibility, it will almost certainly emerge from this region because of the lax attitudes of the authorities there.

Hundreds of ducks in Takmung village, Klungkung regency, Bali, have died suddenly, with avian flu suspected as the cause. I Wayan Sudia, a duck breeder in Takmung village, said he had lost hundreds of his ducks. “Laboratory reports show my ducks were infected by bird flu,”

Many times I have said that migration of birds can and does account for significant spread of viruses all around the globe over vast distances.

This next article clearly demonstrates this fact with the detection of a rare form of avian influenza in Siberia, being found in a Teal duck from Australia.

This clearly demonstrates how our best efforts to contain an outbreak of H5N1 when it becomes H2H transmissible, will always be highly limited by these natural occurring annual migrations that will always tend to negate any attempts to hold this bug to any specific region, and regrettably these factors will in all probability significantly contribute to a pandemic result.

ABSTRACT
The rarely identified influenza A viruses of H15 hemagglutinin subtype have been isolated exclusively in Australia. Here we report the isolation of an H15N4 influenza A virus (A/teal/Chany/7119/2008) in Western Siberia, Russia. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that the internal genes of the A/teal/Chany/7119/2008 belong to the Eurasian clade, and that the H15 and N4 genes were introduced into the gene pool of circulating endemic avian influenza viruses through reassortment events.

The Himalayan Times

NUWAKOT: Bird flu has been detected in Chaughada VDC in Nuwakot district.

According to chairman of the Bird Flu Control District Technical Committee and Chief District Officer, Jeevan Prasad Oli, the sample taken from a dead chicken at local Dhruba Rai's house in Chaughala VDC Ward No. 1 confirmed the presence of the H5N1 virus that causes bird flu.

A team of doctors from the capital has reached Chaughada to kill the fowls and other birds infected by bird flu. Similarly, a team including the veterinary doctors and other technicians reached the villages for preventing the spread of the disease in the area.

CDO Oli said the bird flu virus was reported to be transmitted to the local fowls from two broiler chickens brought to the village from Kathmandu.

Over the last few weeks there have been many stories circulating in several areas including here on GLP, that have been quite concerned with people and the effectiveness of flu vaccines that they have been getting or avoiding and the experiences that have flowed from that.

Now the CDC is also seeing this trend and are attempting to quantify these anecdotal experiences into data that can be assessed for pactical measurement of these apparent affects.

Its good to see the CDC coming forward to do this work as it has been them who have been highly active in promoting influenza vaccinations and the sheer number of adverse stories needs careful assessment for real information.

It will be interresting to watch this and to see if the CDC will pander to Big Pharma, or if they will find any supporting evidence that might provide information that might not be in full support of Big Pharma, as it does seem that there are too many adverse stories for there to be nothing to them.

We shall see.

CDC update addresses flu after vaccination, pregnancy vaccine safety
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently updated two of its flu resources aimed at consumers, addressing questions about flu infections in vaccinated people and adding new information about vaccine safety in pregnant women. The CDC said it has received reports of people who got sick with confirmed flu infections despite vaccination, but so far it's not possible to say if the infections are occurring more often than in past flu seasons. It reviewed several reasons why immunized people could still get sick, including exposure before immunity from the vaccine builds up, differences in circulating strains, and efficacy that can vary. The CDC said it was watching the situation closely and will provide more information, including an interim vaccine effectiveness estimate, as the information becomes available.

Jordan appear to have significantly lifted their game from a perspective of what their authorities seem to be doing with their public health.

Here we see that their Health Minister seems to be taking more interest in actually administrating his portfolio with news of H1N1 swine flu outbreaks and successful treatments of virtually all cases to date and reporting no deaths from Swine flu.

This is a good result for Jordan, lets hope that all concerned maintain their excellent work and astute execution of their duties.

49 H1N1 cases recorded in Jordan

Amman, Jan. 3 (Petra) -- Minister of Health Abdul Latif Wreikat on Thursday said that 49 cases of H1N1 were recorded in the Kingdom during the winter season.

He added that 46 cases recovered and three are still receiving treatment at hospital. Wreikat affirmed that no deaths were caused by the swine flu in Jordan and that the health authorities are still following preventive measures.
