Without any undue waste of time, please contact the airline they were travelling on and do two things...

ONE) Tell them what has happened and that you are concerned, and ask if they've had any other requests for this info, on that particular flight, leave them your contact details.

They'll probably be wary of a lawsuit so put that to rest.

TWO) Im not too sure how you can do this as I'm not an American, but you should advise the CDC of your information and contact details.

Also, it might be a very good idea to suggest that your family members, all now that have been in direct contact, since their return, to place themselves into voluntary quarantine for a few days, get them to talk to their medico's and ask about these suggestions...PLEASE..

sorry, I dont want to over dramatize this but caution is better than the possible conseqences.

Again, I truely hope all will be well.

That is what should be done and is very civic minded, but in this day and age do you think that people would ever do that voluntarily?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1175610

Actually yes I do think that reasoning people who can appreciate the enormity and importance of a matter like this should and would do that.

What are the alternatives, sit back, wondering that maybe I could have saved thousands of lives if Id made that tiny little bit of difference.

How would your concience deal with that once an event like that got going and you began to think about it?
 Quoting: arkay

We arent talking about my conscience and what I would do, Im talking about all the thousands of airplane travellers that leave and arrive every day in Aus. and how few of them would even consider self quarentine under any circumstances.

The new normal sucks, IMHO
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1175610

Regrettably, I absolutely agree with your assessment of what may have become our "normal" behavior these days, and its not only just in matters like this.

But to stay on topic, I would like to think that the very thing that has bought about the type of symptoms that you alude to, might actually be the same ones that may provide the solution as well.

If I might explain, we are fed such a load of nothingness from a multitude of sources these days, starting with the "spin" that our politicians are constantly numbing us with and working all the way down from there.

Most TV is nothing but advertisment overdosed and seperated with predominately junk programming.

As a culture we have learnt to just pretty well ignore almost everything that does not directly impact on us in an individual sense, so weve learnt to not care, which makes your assertions absolutely right on the mark.

But, in the event of something massive and on the threshold of directly impacting on us, that same self interest kicks in pretty quick and pretty spectacularly.

Have a think about the firestorms that swept through Victoria a couple of years ago, then think about just how much people really did get interested and involved in that tradgey

Think about the millions of dollars that was so quickly forthcoming when that was all most people could constructively do to help.

I think our answers lie somewhere in that, at least that is where I really hope they lie, otherwise we will be in for a very tough lesson.

Your thoughts and observations are well founded, and its healthy to have this type of discussion on those "what if" senarios, so thanks heaps for you input, it added a slightly broader angle for us all to contemplate.

What would be good, would be for others, maybe someone qualified, to come in here with suggestions, thoughts and opinions on the types of things that we might be able to work with to help break down those resistive barriers and promote a more healthy and inquisitine approach to seeking out, and distributing valuable information.

Food for thought?

I really do wonder just how unfortunate a life these people have had, to be able to display such hatred towards other people.

Definately not at you, sorry if there was any missunderstanding.

Just that joker wishing for doom and gloom, thoughtless insensitive so and so, but not you...definately
 Quoting: arkay

I'd like to add these thoughts to the above too.

There are my words that I felt to add to another thread I had running in parallel with this one and I copped a bit of criticism for ignoring that one too, so for what its worth it might mean something , just hope it is helpful. The constant nature of GLP and the way the people who use it from all around the world can take a bit of getting used to and I think this perhaps a small example of some of those funny little symptoms we can see from time to time.

Anyway, here is what I wrote...

Sorry A/c..I stopped looking at this thread several days ago when it dropped off the first couple of pages.

This happens quite often I'm learning when we post from Australia.

The reason I think this happens is that we and New Zealand really are the only English speaking nations in this time zone, and by the time England, the US and Europe get back onto GLP, weve retired and the rest of the world gets active here on GLP causing our threads to repidly drop down many pages, Ive just found this one on the last of 10 pages and I only discovered it by accident as there had been fresh posts on it that I had missed.

I was actually searching for another more recent thread that has also suffered the same effects, I am definately learning that with all the constantly changing time zones and wake and sleep patterns, that a constant forum like GLP has some unusual characteristics.

One thing I have been banned for was bumping my threads to keep them front page for long enough for enough viewers see it so that it could gain some momentum of its own...that practice was punished, I now question whether maybe that was completely fair under the circumstances, none the less..

I hope we all band together and all that sort of thing BUT the bushfires very much affected "old Australia", if heaven forbid there is a epidemic or worse, New Australia will be at the coal face, all pulling in different directions.

Go to the RCH, 7 out of 10 patient families dont speak English and uncovered women are made to feel conspicuous and uncomfortable.

As you say the news wont be much help, they are there to keep the peace and entertain, nothing more.

Perhaps you are correct, if so, it may be a very sad day, so lets hope that if things are as you say they are then also recognition and admission of a problem is always the first step to its cure.

In a way that endorses what I pointed out earlier.

We NEED to be talking about these things, from that the various problems will emerge and once recognised, stratagies can be enacted to provide satisfactory solutions to those problems.

Quoting from the link...

The Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang has become the third province in Vietnam to report bird flu outbreak this year

I dont think that its time to go into panic mode yet, as I havent heard that it has directly transmitted, most but not all cases appear to be through direct contact with poultry.

Having said that, viruses can mutate in the course of just a day or so, so caution is really the very best suggestion anyone can offer.

Should they, or anyone else travelling to those regions begin to feel the slightest bit unwell, then the best advive is to get to your medico immediately.

Hope all is ok for your family.

Me too .. and happy I didn't meet up with them yet .. I wonder how far that is from Tay Ninh .. i am gonna google it .. I just know that they got sick after the flight and figured jet lag and now they are all sick ..

Also, as an extra reply to the concern in this post from earlier today.

Another contributor provided this link that maybe not all readers had the opportunity to read, I did, and found it of interest and in this particular case appropriate.

So, I'll re-post it as it could be something that I would expect the airlines to be distributing to passengers should this flu begin to show significant signs of advancing spread.

Here's the link, its very sensible and practical, without generating unnecessary alarm..

Hi Fiona,

thanks for keeping things on going while I got my downtime.

This is an excellent link and everyone who has been following the H5N1 situation would do well to bookmark this one, mainly because of is "official" nature, thus circumventing media manipulation and the various differing levels of downplaying that various governments will subject this topic to.

We have already witnessed this with West Java's response yesterday, and prior to that even here in Australia at the end of January with that massuve duck cull just outside Melbourne.

Jackpot, excellent find, the research you manage to do is without doubt outstanding.

This article is news that can really bring some hope that prediction of possible outbreaks seems now to being possible or at least we are pretty close to it.

That has to be about the best and most encouraging news anyone could bring to the table.

And, its not just about H5N1, it covers all virus outbreaks.

Thanks again "ANON", GLP has its own brand of Karma but I believe in a much higher form also, and Im certain you have a massively healty supply living and caring for you.

Well so far the weekend has been ok, pretty crap weather here in Ausrtralia, where we live in the sub-tropics, hot and humid most of the time ie 27 Celcius days, 22 nights with humidity never under about 85%, its something you do need to get used to, but it is really lovely weather, this is our wet season, so thunderstorms are the norm most afternoons for about an hour or so then it just cooks up again.

Wouldnt trade it for your weather though.

I really wouldnt be too worried about trying to boost your immune system too much...youve already read how a good immune system is probably going to be your worst enemy in the event of contracting H5N1.

Its relates to your age, and there's not much you can do about that.

If I were you, I'd be stocking up on lots of latex gloves, alcohol hand washing solutions, and fine disposable face masks..when this thing begins these will be the most important "front line" protections that you will be easily able to utilize and you wont look like a fanatic.

You shouldnt even have to act like one either, just observe a few practical hygenic principles.

After that, really what you then need to do is to put into place methods where you can order your food and other perishable supplies to be made available to you without direct contact with other people.

Keep in mind, when this bug becomes its most deadly, it will be an airborne vector, spreading from person to person by airborne particles, usually droplets from sneezing and coughting, this is why the medicos say that in general terms a metre seperation from an infected person greatly reduces the risk of infection, however, from my point of view, Id want a bit more than that, I think...

From the excellent links that you have already provided to this thread, one of the most important medical perventative directives clearly indicates that maintaining a distance from an infected person by just a metre does provide a good but not perfect amount of insulation from airbourne vectors of infection.

Hand washing is probably THE most important thing to consider as you just dont know who has handled what you are going to handle also, and that is where most of the real dangers come into play.

Aside from the "inter-personal" concerns if and when this thing decides that it is going to make a serious nuisance of itself, well I think that it'll be people like you and me and all our other aware readers that will probably take the first line of defence until our various governments wake up and replace us with better co-ordinated programs, but first up, we are the ones that will, I think be beating down the doors of our international airports till the media and the rest of our insulated and unaware communities wake up to what they are unknowingly walking in to.

We, I think will in all likely hood be the very first line of defense as we are the most informed anywhere on this topic in the world today.

And THAT is exactly why this thread and its contributors are so very important..it will be us that will spot the real beginnings of this pandemic as soon as it shows the slightest advance, because we are all so personally concerned, educated and informed and able to communicate our findings so efficiently as they appear.

This is exactly why I respect anyone who brings anything to this thread, at the time it might not seem too important but in the bigger picture...well we all know about that, dont we?

I also have a very strong and well based belief that from time to time this thread is being supplied with and guided by influences from within the CDC.

Its just a suspicion but some of the content that has appeared here has been of the highest quality we could have ever hoped for.

I sincerely that those inputs continue to persevere, they are most welcome and highly respected, probably because most of this threads readers already have a reasonable level of education, appreciation of the subject matter, so we wont be placed into any situation of panic if we do read of a certain signifcant event, but rather will react appropriately and be a useful resource to the relevant authorities that will need the type of informed resources that we can offer in the initial stages of any catastrophic event.

After all we are not fools and we do understand our enemy here, do we not?

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
thank you for your reply, as you said there are some excellent recoures out there if people want to educate themselves on this matter,I do have concerns that governments appear to be dragging thier feet with this , perhaps they got burned after the 2009 pandemic scare personally I think its always better to be safe than sorry in matters of life and death,
I will do my best to continue to support this thread
as like you I feel its vital to educate as many people as possable.
It sounds nice and warm were you are , .... lucky thing
are you by the coast at all ?
Just thinking you could always go for a dip if it becomes to humid but guess you doo that already ..
On the preperation side I try to maintain a leval of dry store foods pulses rice flour ect and with the internet ordeering on line is easy although I question if that facility would still exist in a serious outbreak ...
one would hope that like you and I governments would see it as part of the system of containment ...
I had another thread re spanish flu some time back and found out that theres research going on regarding o rh neg blood type , it seems that certain
people with that blood group have developed immunity
against bubonic plague , spanish flu and aids
they have traced it back to a villiage in Derbyshire
called eyam ,
maybe then can harvest this immune defence in some way
I hope so .. you might like to look into that it sounds quite promising ....

Re: <<Advancing Bird Flu-H5N1...Now following MERS and Ebola approaching PANDEMICS>>>
Some research indicates that the villagers of Eyam may have had some genetic protection from the bubonic plague.[3] A CCR5 gene mutation designated as "delta 32" was found in a statistically significant number, 14%, of direct descendants of the plague survivors. The Delta 32 mutation appears to be very rare. In fact, the levels of Delta 32 found in Eyam were only matched in regions of Europe that had been affected by the plague and in Americans of European origin. It has also been suggested[3] that the Delta 32 mutation, if inherited from both parents, may provide immunity to HIV/AIDS. CCR5, short for chemokine (C-C motif) receptor 5, is a chemokine receptor. ... CCR5-D32 is a genetic defect affecting the human immune system that has both harmful and beneficial effects. ...

More recent research at Scripps Research Institute disputes the hypothesis that the Delta 32 mutation provided protection against the plague, suggesting instead that it is more likely to have arisen as protection against some other disease common at the time, such as smallpox. This new hypothesis is still being tested. [4] The Scripps Research Institute, in La Jolla, California is home to notable chemists such as K. Barry Sharpless and P. G. Schultz, as well as neurobiologist Gerald Edelman, and Nobel Laureate Kurt Wurtrich. ...
I believe they are trying to find ways of reproducing this gene but understand that one of the problems have been the difficulties in O rh neg is that it can not be cloned unlike the other blood groups I find it very intriguing

I know this is off topic some what but at the same time
the medical breakthrough in this field lead me to believe that the answer may lay with a better understanding of the presant research thats being carried out
