The saga of the CDC's stance on the transmission of H3N2v via county fairs continues.

This next article taks a look at the sequencing evidence that proves that the CDC has and continues to be out of step with the facts.

WHY?

The above graph is from the upcoming EID paper, “Outbreak of Influenza A (H3N2) Variant Virus Infection among Attendees of an Agricultural Fair, Pennsylvania, USA, 2011” which described lab confirmed and suspect H3N2v cases at the Washington County fair in Pennsylvania in August, 2011. The three confirmed cases were reported previously. The index case (2F), A/Pennsylvania/09/2011, was infected with H3N2v with an H1N1pdm09 M gene. The sequence was closely related to a July case in Indiana, A/Indiana/08/2011, who had no swine exposure. Both cases were described in an MMWR report, which noted sequence differences between the two cases which discounted a common source. However, the two additional cases (both 8F), had sequences which were more closely related to each other (A/Pennsylvania/10/2011 and A/Pennsylvania/11/2011) and the Indiana sequences raising concerns that the novel H3N2v was circulating in humans, and the Pennsylvania cases were due to independent introductions.

The CDC investigation identified four additional cases who were under the age of 4 and had H3N2v antibodies, which were classified as probable cases. Moreover, influenza-like illness was identified in 82 additional cases, which strongly support human to human transmission. Only one symptomatic swine was identified at the fair, and was removed in one day. Since the number of confirmed or suspect cases was high, and was due to multiple introductions, a swine source for these cases was unlikely.
